A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1912.
Application filed February 5, 1908. Serial No. 414,345.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT A. HAM- MOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandwich, in the county of Barnstable and State of Massachusetts, and SYDNEY E. TANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Framingham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tension and Take-Up Mechanisms for Filling-Carriers of Looms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tension and take-up mechanism for filling carriers of looms in which a reel is employed to insert the weft or lling thread, the same being particularly adapted to be used in connection with a machine for weaving a flat belt formed of heavy longitudinal and cross strands, for which applicants et al. have made application for Letters Patent Serial No. 397,315, to which reference may be had for the particular application of the present invention to an operative machine.
The object of the invention is to take up the slack in the filling thread or strand so as to keep the tension upon said filling strand even. Such a device is especially necessary when the reel has passed through the shed andstarts upon its return movement to enter the shed again, at which time there will be a surplus of filling thread, which, without a device of the character set forth, will become doubled up and buckled, resulting in inferior work.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of a filling carrier with our improved take-up and tension device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on line LL of Fig. 1.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings 61 is a reel journaled to rotate upon a hollow hub 245 formed upon a slide or carrier 54 adapted to slide in a frame 57, and having a rack 53 fast thereto into which a gear 152 meshes, said gear being rotated by any suitable driving shaft. The slide 54 has a stud 246 fastened thereto upon which is rotatably mounted a hub 247 to which an arm 248 is detachably fastened, the hub 247 and arm 248 constituting a lever 249, which has a roll 250 journaled on its outer end. A torsional spring 251 encircles the hub 247 and at its lower end is fastened to the slide 54, while its upper end projects into a slot 252 in the flange 253 of the lever 249.
The filling 72 is wound upon the reel 61 and led from said reel around a tension roll 254 rotatably mounted upon an arm 255 which is pivoted at 256 to the guide-frame 7 5. The guide-frame 75 has two arms which are fastened to the slide 54.
The arm 255 consists of two plates 257, 257 and the tension roll 254 is mounted between said plates. A bolt 258 serves as a means whereby the plates 257 may be drawn toward each other and thus apply friction to prevent the tension roll 254 from rotating too freely. Adjacent to the tension roll 254 is a friction roll 259 rotatably mounted upon a bracket 260 fast to the frame 75. An auxiliary guide-roll 261 is rotatably mounted upon a bracket 262 fast to the frame 75. Two guide- rolls 73, 73 are rotatably mounted upon the guide frame 75 adjacent to each other.
The filling 72 passes from the reel 61 to the tension roll 254 and entirely around said tension roll, passing between the tension roll 254 and the frictional roll 259. Said filling then passes to the auxiliary roll 261, thence to the take-up roll 250, and from the takeup roll said filling passes between the pair of guide- rolls 73, 73 and thence through the shed. It will be noted that the take-up roll 250 bears against the filling 72 upon the opposite side thereof from that against which the auxiliary guide-roll 261 contacts with said lling, and preferably said take-up roll engages the filling between the pair of guide-rolls 73 and the auxiliary guide roll 261 and also engages said filling between the in full lines (Fig. 1). When the slide 54 and its reel 61 start to return through the shed, that is, in the direction opposite to the arrow a (Fig. 1) it will be seen that a considerable amount of slack will be obtained in the filling 72 and this slack will be taken up, as shown in dotted lines, by the take-up 'lever 249, said lever passing to the position shown in dotted lines and being moved into said position by the torsional spring 251. When the lling is being. drawn through the shed and the tension placed thereon to draw up the filling taut in the fabric, the pull upon said filling will be in the direction of the arrow I) (Fig. 1), and such a pull will cause the arm 255 to rock upon its pivot 256 and press the filling between the tension roll 254 and the friction roll 259, thus increasing the friction or. tension upon the lling at the time when said filling is being laid between the -warp strands.
It will be understood that the take-up lever 249 moves into the position shown in dotted lines (Fig. 1) when the reel and slide start upon the return movement through the shed and that as the filling is led through the shed and the reel passes, with its slide, to the opposite side thereof, the tension upon the filling strand causes the slack therein to be taken up, and the take-up lever is then drawn back to the position illustrated in full llines (Fig. 1) against the action of the torsional spring 251.
By the construction described in which the arm 248 is made separate from the hub 247 of the lever 249, it is evident'that said arm can be readily removed from the hub and the reel taken ofi the hub 245 without removing the hub 247 of the lever 249 or disarranging the spring 251, by removing the screw 263. V Y Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
