CONCRETE BLOCK AND WALL CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed December 22, 1924. Serial No. 757,506.
This invention relates to concrete block and wall construction, and has for its primary object the provision of a novel form of block from which a wall is built that will be exceedingly strong and durable and capable of being erected with dispatch and without the exercise of great skill in the labor necessary to its erection.
A further object of the invention is to provide a block construction wherein reinforcing means of the block incidentally serve as a'bond or tie between the adjacent blocks when the wall is built up.
A further object of the invention is to provide a block having means adapted to be associated with units or fillers so as to combine therewith and produce a vertical strenghtening beam in the height of the completed wall.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangements of parts which will hereinafter be fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a single and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitations are necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alternations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
Figure 1 is an inner face view of a portion of a Wall constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a section taken on line II-II of Figure 1;

Figure 4 is a view in horizontal section of one of the corners of a wall constructed from a number of my blocks;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the fillers; and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of two blocks showing how they are combined with one intermediate filler.
In carrying the invention into practice, and for the side walls of a wall I employ identical blocks 10. These blocks are constructed of concrete or other suitable plastic material, and they each consist of a substantially straight length or body portion 11 and an intermediate inwardly extending boss or projection 12, the width of the same being co-extensive with that of the body portion 11. The endsof the body portion 11 are miteredat 13 fora purpose to be hereinafter fully explained. Imbedded in each block, preferably in the length of its body portion 11 are reinforcing rods or wires 14 whose ends protrude as at 1 5 beyond the aforesaid mitered edges13, whereby they may be flexed and bentor distorted manually, as will be explained later.
In building a wall of blocks made. in accordance with the foregoing, the blocks are arranged side by side in horizontal formation. They are built up upon one another so that the horizontal rows are relatively superimposed and in vertical coinciding relation. The joints of one horizontal row come intermediate of the blocks of the adj acent horizontal rows, as shown in Figure 1.
This brings the alternate projections 12 of the horizontal rows or blocks above one another in spaced apart respective vertical series. The joints of the next rows of blocks come between the spaced projections of each of said vertical rows, and in these spaces, I place the cube-like inserts or pieces 16 formed of plastic material. These pieces or inserts have mitered edges 17 which coact with two adjoining faces of an equal number of horizontally aligned blocks, as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 6. The recesses 18 formed by the adjacent correlated faces 13 and 17 accommodate the protruding ends of the wires or rods 14;, and these ends can be suitably bent or distorted, as shown.
I then fill in the recesses 18 with a plastic substance such as cement, and permit same to harden and set. In this manner, the blocks of each horizontal row are bound or keyed together. By interposing the insert pieces 16 between the adjacent projections 12, it follows that they coact therewith so that the inner face of the finished wall is formed with vertical strengthening beams, as clearly shown in Figure 1.
To reinforce the wall in a vertical direction, I provide the blocks 11 with vertical openings 18 in which key bars or rods 19 are dropped or inserted, as shown in Figure 2.
In Figure 4 is shown a corner construction in which corner blocks 20 are employed. Each of these blocks is provided with a boss or projection 21 having a mitered face 22 and a recess 23, the latter closed at one end as the construction of the sides of the wall,
and it is accordingly thought that further description is unnecessary;

2. A wall comprising blocks having projections the projections of certain blocks adapted to coincide verticallv with the projections of other of the blocks While spaced aparttherefrvom and units serving as fillers for the spaces between the correlated projections, the ends of each block being mitered so that the ends of adjacent horizontal blocks define V spaces, said filling units each having a pair of mitered edges mutually defining with said V spaces a squared vertical cavity for the reception of plastic material, and the blocks having combined reinforcing and tie rods protrilding from their initered ends adapted to be imbedded in the plastic material contained in said squared cavities.
