"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY 3'. ROUND, OF LONDON, AND ARCHIBALD MGLELLAN, 0F SWANSEA, ENGLAND, ASSIGNORS TO RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
WIRELESS SIGNALING SYSTEM.
Original application filed March 30, 1921, Serial No. 457,152, and in Great Britain April 8, 1920. Patent No. 1,517,854, dated December 2, 1924- 1Divided and this application filed April 23, 1924. Serial This application is a division of our Patent No. 1,517 ,654, of December 2, 1924., for
wireless signaling systems.
When a valve system consisting of a valve or valves and an oscillating circuit, is oscillating various accidental circumstances may prevent the aerial from oscillating, .or may produce a variation in wave length which will be harmful to the valve or valves or to the reception of signals. It is an object of this invention to obviate the possibility of such harm. l
It is a further object of this invention to provide a means for maintaining the aerial system in oscillation at a constant frequency. The manner of carrying out the objects of this invention will be apparent from the fol-.
lowing description taken in connection with the drawing in which: I
The figure is a diagrammatic view illustrating the invention.
Included in the antenna circuit is a variometer L which is designed to increase or decrease theinductance of the antenna circuit in the usual manner. The oscillating circuits-F and E are coupled to the aerial circuit, these circuits being tuned to a frequency greater than, and less than, the frequency of the antenna circuit respectively by a predetermined amount. These circuits F and E are provided with some such means as a variable condenser whereby their respective frequencies are maintained at two predetermined values. These circuits F and E are provided with the hot wire elements T andT which are in turn connected to the movable contact C. Connected to the contact members C and C is the relay G. The relay G is provided with a local circuit having solenoids H and H which are mechanically joined to the armature L.
The operation of'the device is as follows:
In the event that the frequencies in the antenna circuit is altered from the value at which it is designed to operate, a current will fiow in either of the clrcuits F or E as the case may be, depending upon whether the frequency of the aerial has increased ordecreased to resonance with the circuits F i registration with either contact G or C depend ng upon whether the current is generated in the circuit F or the circuit E, or in other words depending upon whether thefrequency of the antenna circuit has been decreased or increased. Thus the relay G is -or as small a variation in the frequency of the antenna circuit as may be deemed to be desirable. Whatever these adjustments may be, the, mode of operation of the device is the same.
Having thus described our invention we desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States the following:
1. In wirless signaling system the combination of an antenna, a variable tuning element associated therewith the means responsive to currents energizing said antenna for maintainin the tuning thereof substantially constant y means of said element.
2. A wireless signaling system comprising an aerial, a plurality of auxiliary oscillating circuits coupled to the aerial and differing slightly in tune therefrom and means controlled by the flow of currents in the said circuits or restoring the tune of the aerial to normal.
3. A wireless signaling system comprising an aerial, an auxiliary ossicllating circuit coupled to the aerial and tuned slightly above the normal frequency thereof, an additional auxiliary oscillating circuit coupled to said aerial and tuned slightly below the normal frequency thereof and means controlled by the fiowof current in said circuits for restoring the tune of the aerial to normal.
4. In a wireless signaling system, an aerial circuit, variable means to maintain the turn ing of said circuit substantially constant, and means associated with said aerial circuit to govern the operation of saidvariable means.
5. In a wireless signaling system, an aerial circuit including a variable tuning element, a plurality of oscillating control circuits coupled to said aerial circuit, each of said control circuits being tuned to a frequency differing from that of the aerial circuit by a predetermined amount, a relay associated with said control circuits, means associated with the relayand responsive to each of said control circuits to operate the variable tuning element when the frequency of the aerial circuit is changed to that of any one of the control circuits, whereby the frequency of the .areial circuit is restored to its normal value.
6. In a wireless signaling system having an aerial circuit, means to maintain the tuning of the aerial substantaially constant comprising, a variometer, a plurality of circuits coupled to saidaerial circuit each of said plurality of circuits being tuned to a frequenc different from that of the aerial by a pre etermined amount, and means to actuate the variometer when the frequency of the aerial circuit is changed to the frequency of any one of said plurality of circuits, whereby the frequency of the aerial circuit is restored to its normal value.
7. In a wireless signaling system having an aerial circuit, means to maintain the tuning of said aerial circuit substantially constant comprising a variometer, a control circuit having a fre uency less than the frequency of the aerial circuit, a second control circuit having a frequency greater than the frequency of the aerial circuit, both said control circuits being coupled to the aerial circuit whereby a current will fiow in one of said control circuits whenthe frequency of the aerial circuit changes to the frequency of one of the control circuits, each of said circuits being provided with a hot wire element which is responsive to the flow of current therein, a movable contact associated with said hot wire elements, and means under control of said movable contact to actuate the variometer.
