GARMENT l-IANGER.
Application filecl January This invention has reference to garment hangers and particularly to a small compact hanger adapted to provide a neat, pleasing, and ornamental attachment for a door or other support and which is foldable into and out of operative position.
The invention further provides the garment hanger in which the garment-supporting arms are caused to automatically swing into and out of position as they are moved out. of and int-o the case.
Other objects and advantages of the intention may be apparent from the following detailed description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a section of a door or other support to which the in'- Vention is shown applied and in open position, i
Figure 2 is a similar' View With the invention shown in closed position,
Figure 8 is a sectional View of the door illustrating the manner in which the device is attached thei'eto,

Figure 8 is a section on line ure 5` and Figure 9 is a section on line ure G.
In the drawings, 1 designates the door of a closet or clothes press having a recess 2 forined therein to accommodate the rectangular casing 8 of the garn'ient hanger. The casing` is provided with an attaching flange ll; through which are inserted the fastening screws 5 by which the casing is secured to 5-5 of Fig- 6-6 of Fig- 7 is a section on line 7-7 of Fig- 8-8 of Fig- 9-9 of Figthe door. Fitting` snugly within the casing 3 and turninp; on pivot G at the lower end thereof is a hollow rectangular support bar.
17, 1925. Serial No. 3,012.
Hanger arms 10 are carried. by a hollow rectangular bar 11 on the inside of the support bar ana arranged to slide back and forth within the support bar, as hereinafter eX- plained. i
Each hanger arm operates through a correspondingly spaced opening 12 in the side of the slidable earrier bar 11 and is provided with upper and lower bearing lugs 13 which turn on a .Vertical pivot lt on the inside of the carrier bar. A sprin' 15 encircles the pirot 111- between the lugs with one tern'iinal 16 bearing` against the inside of bar 11 and the other terminal 17 pressing outwardly against the inner end of the hanger arm.
llence, the arm is subjected to the continuous F pressure of the spring which thus serves to swing the arm outwardly and baclrwardly whenever the openings 9 and 12 are brought into relativ'e aligninent by the shifting` of the carrier bar 11. As shown in Figure 6, the rear edges of openings 9 and 12 serve as abutments for the hanger arms and limit the baclward swing of the arms so that the latter, in their outermost positions, extend sub stantially at right angles.
The shifting of the carrier bar 11 simultaneously with the raising and lowering of the support bar 7 is effected by suitable means, such as a coupling member 18 connecting the carrier bar 11 to the inside of casing 3. As shown in top plan in Figure 5, the coupling member 18 may be a short, flat, metal plate having its opposite ends rolled to provide bearings 19 and 20. Bear' ing` 19 encircles a fixed pivot 21 which is fastened to the side of the case and .above the pivot G of the support bar. Bearing 20 encircles a fixed pivot 22 at the inner end of the carrier bar 11, both the supportbar i' and the carrier bar 11 being cut away, as shown at 28, to accommodate the plate 18. lVhen the support bar extends hm'iwntally :from the casing, the carri-er bar ll has its front terminal positioned an apprecable distance inwardly from the outer end of the support bar, as indicated by the space 24.. At this time, the hanger arms 10 project outwardly on opposite sides of the support bar and may be utilized to support shirts, lingerie, and other articles ofapparel, as iilus=- tra'ted in Figure 1; The hook 8 may ao be used as a supportfcr a eonventional hangen lhen the device is no longer in use, the support bar is swung upwardly into the case and as itmoves upwardly, the carrierbr 111 is caused; by reason of the plate 18',` to" slide forwardly Within the support bar, eausing the hanger arms 10 to" be'7d`i`1'aiv` iir'tliro'i'tgh openings 9 and 12; the operation being so arranged that all of the hanger arms areic'au'sed to be swung in through the sides of the sup,- port. bar before the latter'ha's Cmplet-elyieie tered the case 8.
