Description

June 8 1926 M. W. BECK GARMENT l Filed Jan. 30, 1925 .9 /qf Mfg C 3 MORRIS W. BEC/f aufm nu?,
Patented June 8, 1926.
PATENT OFFICE.
vI [ORBIIS 'W'. BECK, O F IDORC'HESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
GARMENT.
Application nled January 30, 1923. j Serial No. 615,844.
This invention relates to bifurcated garments, and more particularly to bloomers.
An object of the invention is to provide a garment in which the elasticity is increased at the points where the garment is subjected to the greatest strains.
It is the usual practice to provide bloomers having warp threads running longitudinally and thus provide suliicient elasticity or stretching laterally of the garment. I have found that the crotch of the garment is subjected to vertical or longitudinal strains and that a garment which is only capable of stretching laterally is subjected to great wear due to its inability to absorb these strains.
In the present invention, I provide a crotch insert cut on the bias to permit the goods to stretch longitudinally and thus add to the life and duration of the garment.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation,
Figure 2 is a central vertical sectional view,
Figure 3 is a diagrammatic view of a sheet of cloth and a pattern showing the manner in which the parts of the garment are cut,
and,
Figure t is a transverse sectional view through one of the legs of the garment on line 4 4 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates the leg of the bloomer. I
The bloomer is provided with a waistband 2, adapted to receive an elastic string 3 by means of which it is held in position. As shown, each leg of the bloomer is provided with a crotch insert 4.
Referring to Figure 3 of the drawings, the cloth from which the garment is out is arranged with the warp threads running from 5 to 6. A leg portion 7 is then placedl on the goods with the longitudinal edges 8 of the pattern arranged parallel to the warp threads. As shown, these edges are provided with recesses 9. The piece of cloth is then w cut to the shape of the pattern and sewed together, the edges 10, 11 and 12, 13 being sewed to`each other. This forms one leg of the garment and one half of the body portion. A similar piece of cloth is then cut from the material and the edges 14, 15 and 16, 17 of one piece sewed to the similar edges of the other iece to form the front and back seams 18 an 19.
The crotch insert pattern 20 is then placed on the goods as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, with the longitudinal axis of the pattern arranged diagonally of the material so that the goods will be cut on the bias.
.Four` of these pieces of material are cut, as the insert is formed of double thickness, as
shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. The inserts are then sewed to the body in the recesses 9 between the points 11 and 16 and 13 and 14. l
The completed garment has the usual lateral elasticity due to the fact that the weft or filling threads throughout the body of the garment are arranged transversely. The strains in the crotch of the garment are substantially from the lower point 21 in Figure 1 f the drawings, to the upper point 22 and from the point 22 to the point 23. By cutting the crotch inserts at an angle so that the weft threads run diagonally of the insert, the goods will stretch in these directions and permit this portion of the garment to give when placed under strains.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the' invention or the scope' of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A garment formed of woven material comprising leg and body portions having warp 4threads running longitudinally of the garment to permit lateral stretching, each of the leg portions being provided with a recess, and a substantially heart shaped crotch insert arranged in each of said recesses, the warp threads of said inserts being arranged diagonally to permit longitudinal stretching thereof.
In testimony whereof, I atlix my signature. v
