While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet diiferent conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of an umbrella embodying the invention, showing the same extended,
Figure 2 is a central vertical section view showing the parts folded,
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view of the upper end of the stick and the notch thereon to which the ribs are attached,
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the runner,
Figure 5 is a fragniental longitudinal section of a rib,
Figure 6 is a cross section of the rib on the line 6-6 of Figure 5,
Figure 7 is a detail view of the handle, and
Figure 8 is a detail view of a modified form of handle.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and desig nated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
T he umbrella comprises a sectional stick embodying the parts 1 and 2 which preferably have a telescopic arrangement andV which when extended are heldin the adjusted position by means of 'a suitable catch B. A sleeve Vor runner 4 is loosely mounted upon the stick and carries a collar 5 to which the stretches are pivotally ooni'iectedi The Serial N0. 660,600.
sleeve 4 is adapted to be confined upon the stick between suitable stops or in any preferred way and is provided upon its inner side with a longitudinal groove G which is adapted to clear the lowermost stop to admit of lowering the sleeve upon the stick when required. rThe collar consists of a ring 5 mounted upon the sleeve 4 and held thereon between upper and lower stops. Suitable stops 8 on the stick engage the runner 4 tion 9 and a lower section 10, the latter being pivoted to the notch 16 and the section 10 telescoping therein. The braces 8 are pivoted to the sections 9 which are slidable upon the sections 10. lVhen the umbrella is folded, the runner 4 is adjacent the notch 16 and the braces 8 lie between the stick and the ribs, the latter being telescoped. The covering- 11 is attached at its outer edge to the tips of the rib sections 9 and to the swinging ends of the sections 10 and when the umbrella is folded, the outer portion of the covering folds upon itself and is adapted to be wrapped about the stick and frame and is held in place by means of a tape or strap 12.
The handle is divided longitudinally and comprises the sections 13 and 14 which are hingedly connected to swing into open-position to admitof folding and unfolding the umbrella. A suitable catch l5 holds the sections 13 and 14 when closed. rllhe sectional handle may be of uniform diameter throughout, or one end may be enlarged. The section 2 of the stick is pivotally connected to the handle so that when the umbrella isfolded it may be turned into positionv to be enclosed within the sections of thehandle; Y
