application filed March 30, 1925. Serial 11o. 19AM).
This invention relates to paper support and guiding attachments for typewriters, and my object is to produce a device for the support of long strips of paper, preferably folded accordion-like, so that the weight of the support and the paper is entirely removed from the carriage of the typewriter as distinguished from the construction set out in my former Patent No. 1,247,071, issued November 20, 1917, in which the weight of the support and paper is borne by the typewriter carriage.
Another object is to produce a support which is readily adjustable to accommodate all standard typewriting machines and which is also adjustable to accommodate paper of difi'erent widths.
A still further ob'ect is to produce a paper support which is 0 strong, durable, eflicient and inexpensive construction and in order that it may be fully understood, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same.
'l igure 3 is a section on the line III-Ill of Figure 2. I Figure .4: is a perspective view of one of the paper supporting members.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a slightly modified form of paper support.
In the said drawing, where like reference characters identify corresponding parts in all of the figures, 1 indicates a suitable base which if of sufiicient weight, may rest on the typewriter table or support, or if relatively of light weight, may be permanently attached thereto, said base having a post extension 2 having a central bore or passageway 3. Adapted for sliding ad ustment within the bore 3 is a rod 4:, held in any predetermined osition of adjustment by. a set screw 5. T e upper end of said rod is enlarged as at 6 and formed with a pair of laterally projecting ears 7 Embracing and pivotally pinned at one end to said ears 7 by means of a pin 8, for horizontal swin ing movement, is a skeleton arm or supporting member 10, the opposite end of said arm 10 being pivotall secured by a pin 12 to an end of a secon skeleton arm or supporting member 14. The pivotal adjustment of the arm 10 around the pin 8 '28 and a ion is limited only by abutment of said arm to with the enlarged upper end 6 of the arm 4. In order to limit the pivotal movement of the arml l around the pin 12, in an expanding direction, the former is formed with an extension lo'which, through abutment with an upstanding pin 16 on the arm 10, limits the pivotal movement of said arms 10 and 14 to a position in alinement with each other, the pivotal movement in the opposite or contracting direction being limited by W engagement of said pin 16 with a notch 17 cut in the arm 14:, as will be apparent most clearly by reference to Figure 2.
The free end of the supportingmember 14:, is swivelled on a pin 18 rigidly secured at its upper end to an L-shaped strap 19, rigidly secured at its ends to extremities of a pair of spaced parallel sleeves or tubes 20, permanently engaged at their opposite ends with the bottom portion of a right-angle shaped paper guide and support 21. It will be noted that the upstanding portion of said support is shorter than the bottom portion (see Figures 3 and 1), and at one end said upstanding portion is formed at its front W end with a right-angle flange 22 overlying the bottom of the support and providing a paper feed opening or slot 23, for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
The projecting end of the bottom portion of the support 21, is hinged at 24: to a strap member 25, and hinged at 26 to the other end of the strap is a clam 27' of such character as to be universal, t at is, adapted to grip the paper guide 28 of any standard W typewriter platen 29 (see Figure The spaced sleeves 20 slidingly receive a pair of spaced rods 30, rigidly secured at one end to a pair of depending ears 31 of a paper support and guide 32 correspond- W ing in all respects with the L-sha ed guide 21, just described. It will be evident that the guide 32 is slidable'toward and from the guide 21 to accommodate paper of different widths, and said guide is equipped with a hinged strap member 25, and the latter is hinged at 26 to a clam 27, for engaigement with the paper gui e 28.
When the device is in use, the clamps 27 will be rigidly engaged with the plate guide m5 stri of paper, preferably folded accor ion-1i e (see Figure 3) is placed in the supports 21 and 32, it being writer is now operate in the ordinary manner, the hinges 24 and 26 accommodating any slight difference in the height of the device as regards the typewriter platen, and the'pivot pins 8, 12 and 18 permitting the arms 10 and 14 to swing or oscillate back and forth in accordance with the movements,
of the carriage, said arms transmitting the entire weight of the supports and paper to the rod 4. It will be noted that as the platen is rotated the paper will be unfolded and withdrawn from the supports, the overlying portions of the L-shaped flanges preventing the paper from kicking or buckling upwardly and the depending portions preventing the folded bulk of the paper from being dislodged forwardly off the supports.
In Figure 5, a device corresponding in all respects to that described is illustrated, except that the extension portions of the bottoms of the supports 21 and 32, are bent upwardly adjacent flat overlying flanges 33, to form the feed slot or opening. The oper-- ation of this modification is similar in all respects to the operation above-described.
\Vith this arrangement the paper is unfolded from the top instead of the bottom of the mass, and because of this there is a tendency for the paper to buckle upwardly. 'lo obviate this a small piece of card board or other light weight may be placed upon the folded paper.
When it is desired to detach the device from the typewriter, the clamps 27 are disengaged from guide 28, and the arms 10 and 14 are pivoted around the pins 8, 12 and 18 until the lower rod of the slidable pair of rods 30, is engaged with an opening 34 formed in the upper end of the enlarged portion 6 of the rod 4. The rod 30 may be held in this position through clamping engagement by a set screw 35 threaded in the extremity of said portion 6 (see'Figure 1). When the device is thus folded and locked all tendency for the parts to vibrate or swing back and forth is eliminated.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a device of the character outlined which possesses all of the features of advantage set forth as desirable, and while I have described and claimed the preferred embodiment of the same, I reserve the right to make all changes properly falling within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, 7
a paper support pivoted to the other end of said-second arm, and means carried by said paper support for detachable engagement with a horizontally-movable carriage.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a support, of an arm pivoted to said support, a second arm pivoted to said first-named arm, a paper support pivoted to the said second arm, and hinge means carried by said paper support and adapted for engagement witha movable carriage to permit of relative up and down movements of said paper supportand carriage.
3. In adevice of the-character described, the combination with a support, of an arm pivoted to said support, a second arm pivoted to saidfirst-named arm, a paper support member pivoted to the said second arm, .a second'paper support member carried by and movable toward and from said firstnamed paper support, and hinge arms carried by each paper sup ort, and clamps hinged to said arms and a apted for engagement with a movable carriage to permit of relative up and down movements of said paper supports and carriage.
4. In a device of the character described, a post, a vertical rod adjustable on the post, a typewriter carriage guide, a pa er support attached to and movable with said guide, and a pair of arms pivotally connected for horizontal movement, one having a pivotal connection with said vertical rod and the other a pivoted connection with and forming a support for the paper support.
5. The combination of swinging extensible and contractible support having a fixed axis at one end and free at the other end for horizontal movement in any direction, :1 bracket pivoted to the free end of the support, a pair of parallel sleeves carried by the bracket, a pair of rods extending slidingly through the sleeves, and a paper su port and guide comprising two paral el members respectively mounted rigidly on said sleeves and rods, and adapted to cooperatively support and guide paper for use on a typewritin'g machine.
In witness whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
EDNY D. BENNETT.
