When the webs, indicated in general by the letter A, are to be straigilitened under the platen to permit the withdra-wal of the interleaved carbon-sheets B in the usual manner, the platen 10, in its displaceable frame 12, is swung upwardly about the pivots 14, whereupon the webs are drawn forward a distance determined by means of the usual gage 81, adjustable on a gage-bar 32` mounted centrally on a front paper-table which forms part of the platen-displacing frame 12.
As the 'displacing frame 12 is not swung about the a-Xis of the broad pinions 26, it will be apparent that the gears 25 will be carried out of mesh with the pinions 26 during the displacing movement, but the gears and pinions are provided with teeth which permit ready re-engagement without *opposition Project-ing rearwardly from the platenframe 15 are brackets 35 carrying a cross rail 36 which forms the front support for the carbon carriage rails 37. A cross-bar 38, mounted at its ends in the platen end plates 16, carries levers 39 provided with hooks 40 to engage With studs 41 in the inne-r frame end plates 13 to hold the platen when in operative position and one of the levers 39 has a finger-piece by which the hooks may be disengaged. Another cross-bar 45, having at least one flat face 46, extends lengthwise across the carriage between brackets fixed on the platen-frame 15, and paper-guides 47, of novel construction for guiding the worlz-webs A, are adjustably mounted upon the bar 45. .Each guiding member 47 comprises upstanding arms 48 and 49 connected by a yoke or cross-piece 50, the arms having openings therethrough of a shape to conform with the supporting bar 45. The arms 48 and 49 and connecting yoke elements 50 are bifurcated, as at 51, below the openings, the arrangement being' such that the arms resiliently grip the supporting bar 45, and yieldably resist movement of the guides 47 along the bar. The fiat portion of the supveach plate being inclined downuard with rcspect to the main portions, andeach plate is provided with a right angular upstanding flange having outstanding projections 5h suited to engage against the front edges of the guide elements 48. Formed in the plate 58 adjacent its lower' edge is an elongated slot 57 and operable therein is a rivet 5h f 'fixed in the upper plate 54 to permit relative sliding motion as the guide flanges 55 are adjusted towards or from each other. The outer, upper edges of both plates are fianged downwardly at right angles, as at 59 and 00, one overlapping the other, the inner flange 59 being provided with a longitudinal slot 61 in which operates the body of a screw 52 carried by the flange and clamped by a nut (S3 when the chute is properly adjusted. Rigidly secured to the under surface of each plate and 54 are fiat spring loops to easily engage over the support bar 45 when turned in one direction and be held firmly thereon when turned in an opposite direction, due to contact of the projecting lugs 55 against the edge of the nonrotatable guides 47, this construction being best seen in :Figure 5, this view clearly showing that when the chute 52 is roclred forward on the bar to clear the lugs 56 from the guides 47 and bring the arms of the loops 04 parallel with the flat face 40 of the bar, the chute may be raised bodily off the bar and out of the machine.
A knife 65 is supported between the plates 13 of the platen-displacing frame, adjacent the face of the platen 10, usually in such manner that it may be swung lii'nitedly upward or downward. In order to avoid the necessity of such movement of the knife, which is occasioned by the difiiculty in inserting a sheet of paper around the platen from the rear, there is provided two or more paper-fingers 66 curved to suit the platen, the ends of the paper-fingers extending over the paper-deiector 42 at their lower extremity and their opposite ends bent re-entrantly upon themselves as at 07, providing a loop G8 shaped to snugly engage over the blade of the lrnife and which may be readily moved therealong into any desired position by a knob 09 fixed in the outer element of the loop, the lniob also assisting in placing the finger on the knife and in removing it therefrom, this being conveniently accomplished as the knife extends beyond the platen as shown in Figure 1.
'Vhen the fingers 66 and chute 52 have been removed from the machine, the gagebar 32 may be restored to its seat below the paper-table and clamped by the screw as shown in Figure 3, these changes or substitutions requiring no appreciable time in their accomplishment, but 'being effective in converting` the machine to Whichever purpose may be required of it.
