ROUTING MACHINE.
Application filed May 15, 1925 My invention relates to routing machines for lasts.
It is the object of my invention to provide a routing-1' machine for forming the grooves in the heel and toe parts O'li t 1C last-s in such a way that both the toe and heel part of the lasts may be routedsuccessively in the same machine and so that a plurality of heel and toe parts may be routed in the same way to give uniform production.
It is my object to eliminate variations in production and to facilitate production by providing a machine which when once set will rent the parts of the lasts uniformly and rapidly.
It is a further object to provide a routing machine in which the routing can be done with the least opportunity for injury to the operator.
It is a further object to provide means of holding the last parts in predetermined fixed positions utilizing the established holes in the la st parts through which the anchor pins are afterwards inserted.
It is a further object to provide a machine which is adjustable -quickly and positively to varying sizes or last-s so thatone machiu, may be adaptableto any type or form of last.

Referring to the drawings, 1 is a sup porting base which has an overhanging arm 2 from which (legends a supporting arm 3 in which is ournalled a shaft 4; operated by a hand wheel 5. Turning to the table 7, at one end a link 17 is pivoted thereto at 18. .The other end of the link is pivoted to the lever 9 at 19 so that by a transverse movement of the lever the table 7 may be moved laterally. Mounted upon this table is a rectangular holding trame consisting of a base member 520, side members 21 and a cap member 22. n this cap member there are journalled two scre 23 operated by handles 2-42 and having on the lower ends of such screws the positlolld or holding pins 25 which are adapted to be inserted in one end of the hole in a part in which the anchor pin is normally located. Corresponding pins 26 directly beneath the pins 25 are located on the base member 20.
The holding: frame is arranged to be moved forwardly or rearwardly on the table 7 through slots 27 in which are located positioning}; bolts 28.
On the side away from the operator mounted upon the table 7 are a pair of spaced reotangular plates 29 having a pair ofslots 80 and 31 in which are located positioning bolts These slide plates 29 carry a positioning screw 33 having a broad fiat head 34L upon which a part of the last rests.
Thus the lasthalf can be mounted with its hinge side towards the routing tool which is to form a mortise in it by mounting the last with the pin 26 in the under side ot the anchor pin hole and the pin to the upper side of the anchor pin hole.

The last can be swung upon the pins 25 and 26 so that the routing tool may term the mortise desired. The plate 34; forms broad bearing for the last part directly beneath the portion being routed.
The shaft t carries on its inner end a bevelled gear 37 meshing with a similar bevelled gear at right angles thereto 38 carr1ed on the upper end of a worm shaft 39 which turns in a bracket 4L0. Thus it is possible to elevate the entire platform upon which the apparatus rests through the slide members 4 1 working on the guide 42 of the support 1.
Mode of operation.
The last parts 35 are each placed on the broad flat head 3&- and the pins 26 pro ect into the usual perforations in the last parts. The upper pair of holding pins 25 are then lowered by means of operating handles 24: and thereby causing said pins 25 to pro ect into the last parts.
When it is desired to bring the routing tool 15 in contact with one ofthe last halves, the operator grasps the lever 9 and moves it to the right, thereby causing the plate 7 to also move in the same direction along the slide 6. The last parts are elevated or lowered relative to the position of the tool 15 for cutting purposes by rotating the hand wheel 5, thereby transmitting motion through the beveled gear 37 and 38 respectively, and since worm 39 is threaded in fixed bracket 40, the rotary motion willcause the entire platform to move in a vertical direction in the slide 12. It is also to be noted that the holding frame 21 may be moved forwardly or rearwardly on the table 7 through slots 27 in which are located positioning bolts 28.
The flat heads 34: which support a part of the last halves are also adjustable vertically and laterally with respect to the tool 15, by means of the pair of plates 29 mounted on the tables 7 through the pair of slots 30' and 31 in Which are positioning bolts 32.
It will be seen from the preceding description that the members 84.- may be adjusted vertically by two separate means.
Thus it will be apparent that the holding device is adapted for vertical, lateral, forward and rearward movement with respect to the position of the routing tool 15, so that last halves held by the device may be suit-- ably mortise-d.
It will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications as may be necessary to adapt it to varying conditions and uses.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a routing machine, a transversely movable supporting plate, means for moving said plate, a frame thereon, said frame being adjustable fore and aft of said plate, a work positioning pin on the bottom of the frame, a second pin over said first pin, a screw journalled in the top portion of the frame, said second pin being carried on said screw, and means for actuating said screw, thereby forming a work-holding pair of pins, and a second similar upper and lower positioning pin with a similar actuating screw forming a second work-holding pair of pins spaced from but adjacent to the first pair of pins, and bearing supports having broad bearings for the under-sides of the last halves adjacent a routing tool.

In a routing machine, a transversely movable supporting plate, means for moving said plate, a work frame thereon, said frame being adjust-able fore and aft of said plate, a positioning pin on the bottom of the frame, a second pin over said first pin, a screw our-- nailed in the top portion of the frame, said second pin being carried on said screw, and means for actuating said screw, thereby forming a work-holding pair of pins, and a second similar upper and lower positioning pin with a similar actuating screw forming a second work-holding pair of pins spaced from but adjacent to the first pair of pins, and bearing supports having broad bearings for the undersides of the last halves adjacent a routing tool, and means for adjusting said fr me fore and aft the said plate and means for adjusting said bearing supports vertically and laterally.

In a routing machine, a transversely movable supporting plate, means for mov ing said plate, a frame thereon, said frame being adjustable fore and aft of said plate, a work positioning pin on the bottom of the frame, a second pin over said first pin, a screw journalled in the top portion of the frame, said second pin being carried on said screw, means for actuating said screw, ther by forming a workl1olding pair of pins, a second similar upper and lower positioning pin with a similar actuating screw forming a second work-holding pair of pins spaced from but adjacent to the first pair of pins, bearing supports having loroad bearings for the undersides of the last halves adjacent a routin g tool, means for adjusting said frame fore and aft the said plate, and means for adjusting said bearing supports vertically and laterally, said plate being moved laterally by a lever linked to said plate, said lever being pivoted on the main portion of the machine with its handle adjacent the oporator.

In a routing machine, a transversely movable supporting plate, a base therefor, a rectangular frame mounted thereon, said. frame having a base member and a cap member, spaced worlcpositioning pins mounted on said base member of said frame forwardly of the main portion of said frame, a pair of screws having pins on the lower ends thereof, said screws being journalled in said cap member of said frame, handles for actuating said screws, plate supporting members on said transversely movable supporting plate, plates, consisting of screws with broad heads, carried adjacent on said plate supporting members adjacent said lower pins, said heads being adjacent said lower pins between said pins and a routing tool, and a routing tool, whereby last parts may be p0- sitioned by said pins and be movable re1ative to said routing tool said pins being inserted in transverse apertures of said last parts as anchoring pins, and whereby grooves may be formed in said last halves by said routing tool.
