To all whom it may concem Be it known that I, ALBERT D. GAYWOQD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Print-Trimming Machines, of which the following is a specifica io This invention relates to sheet cutter and trimmers and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved photograph print trimming machine which is so constructed that the machine can be actuated by the operator in such a manner that both of his hands can be utilized for holding and manipulating the prints being trimmed, thereby facilitating the work associatedwith such trimming operation.
In photograph print trimming machines a swinging cutter knife has heretofore been utilized-and this knife had to be actuated by one hand of the operator. This prevented the use of both hands for holding and manipulating the prints and consequently resulted in loss .of time and prevented the easy handling of the prints. To offset this, some photographers have rigged up foot treadles for operating the swinging-knife but this has been found to be unwieldy, complicated and hard to operate.
It is therefore another object of this invention to provide an improved print trim-- ining machine embodying a tilting cutting table for receiving the prints, the table being actuated by the pressure of the hand used for holding the prints, thereby permitting of the operation of the machine by the same hand used for holding the prints.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a machine for trimming the margir nal edges of photograph prints embodying a sliding knife head and a swinging cutting table for receiving the prints, the knife head and cutting table being so arranged in relation to each other that upon applying of pressure to the table, the able and knife head will be moved toward each other for severing the edge of a print arranged on the table.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved means for adjusting the position of the knife carrying head in relation to the knife carried by the table, whereby the wear on said parts can be effectively taken up.
A still further object of this invention is to provide an improved print trimming maadjustably connecting the knife carrying chine of the above character which is durable and eflicient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
l vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which drawings:

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates the improved print trimming machine which includes the base portion 13, the swinging or tilting table structure 0 and the knife head carrying structure D.
The base structure B includes a pair of side bars or castings which can be formed of anydesired material and in any desired way. These side bars or castings 10 are connected by cross or end bars 11 which are preferably formed of wood or the like.
These cross bars 11 are connected. with the side bars or castings 10 by suitable fastening elements 12. The side bars or cast-- ings 10 are provided with outwardly extending feet 13 adjacent to their terminals, and these feet are adapted to receive fastening elements 14 which are adapted to engage the support upon which the machine is positioned for preventing the accidental displacement thereof.
As shown the side bars or castings 10 are provided with longitudinally extending strengthening ribs 15 and these ribs 15 ex tend forwardly from the bearing bosses 16 to the horizontally disposed guide slots 17. The bearing bosses 16 extend outwardly from opposite sides of the bars 10 and to form the pivot points 18 and 19 for the pairs of links 20 and 21, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
The swinging tilting table C includes the inclined fiat plate 22 which is preferably formed of wood or the like. The lower end of the plate 22 has the opposite edges thereof provided with casting. 23 which are formed in any preferred manner and of any preferred metal. These castings 23 include the angularly disposed plates 24 and 25 which are secured to the side edges and lower face of the plate 22 by suitable fastening elements 26. The angular related plates 24 and 25 carry the depending lugs 27 and these lugs 27 carry the outwardly extending pins 28 which are disposed in the slots 17 formed in the side bars 10. These pins 28 carry anti-friction rollers 29 which engage the upper and lower walls of the guide slots and permit the easy swinging of the table C in relation to the base frame.
The rear end of the table has its opposite side edges provided with angle plates 30 and these angle plates are secured in position by suitable fastening elements 31b The side walls of these angle plates are provided with inwardly extending threaded bosses 32 for the reception of the fastenin j screws of the castings 34 which are mounted on the outer faces of the side walls of the angle plates 30. These castings 34 include side walls 35 and the cylindrical sleeves 36. which receive the polished guide rods 37. The guide rods 37 extend above and below the cylindrical sleeves 36 and are held in position against accidental displacement by thumb screws or the like 38. The walls 35 of the castings 34 are provided with slots 39 through which the retaining screws 33 are adapted to extend and these retaining screws 33 are connected together by a cross plate 40 which holds the screws against accidental movement in relation to each other.

The transparent guide plate 44 has its upper surface engaged by the arcuately curved retaining plates 45 and these plates 45 are held in position by retaining screws 46 which are threaded into the outwardly extending flanges 43. These flanges 43 engage the cylindrical sleeves 36 and form strengthening ribs for the same. The transparent plate 44 is preferably formed of celluloid or the like and by curving the sametransversely as clearly shown in Figure 5 of the drawings, the forward end of the same is raised a further distance from the plate 22 than the rear end thereof and this forms means for permitting the easy positioning of the prints under the same. Further by curving this plate transversely the same is strengthened and prevented from be coming mutilated.
The connecting bars 11 which are positioned on the inner side of the side plates 10 are arranged in pairs as are the outer con necting plates or links 20 and the upper ends of the links or rods 2i are pivotally mounted upon pivot pins 47 carried by the angle plates 30. The angle plates 30 are slotted at this point for the reception of the upper ends of these links or rods and the outer edges of the base plate 22 are also.
notched for the reception of the same. These links 21 are arranged at an. angle to the vertical and the upper end of the same is positioned approximately the same rlistance from the vertical as the length of the guide slots 1'7. The upper rear edge of the plate is grooved as at 49 for the refeption of the lower transversely extenthng knife 50. the rear edge of which is provided with cutting edge. The rear end of thetransparent guide plate 44 ends directly I above the knife edge. As shown the cutting edge of the blade 50 extends slightly be yond the. rear edge of the plate The links or rods 21 are connected together for synchronous movement by a transversely extending connecting plate 51, As shown this connecting plate 51 is provided with dependin feet 52 which are riveted or otherwise secured to the links. To normally hold the links or rods 21 in their correct position, a contractile coil spring 53 is pro vided and; this contractile coil spring 53 has one end thereof engaging the transversely extending cross bar 51 as at 54, while its opposite end engages a suitable eye 55 can ricd by the forward cross or end bar ll. Thus it can be seen that a tension is normally exerted on the table 22 to hold the same in its forward position.
The upper surface of the plate 22 adjacent to one longitudinal edge thereof is provided with the usual rule 56 so as to facilitate governing of how much of the marginal edge of the print should be cut. The rule extends under the transparent guide 4% and has its upper surface curved at this point to conform to the transverse curvature of the transparent plate. The head carrying knife mechanism l) includes the transversely extendingbar 57 which is reinforced by the angular rib 58. The terminals of the bar 57 carry depending semi-cylindrical sleeves 59 which are adapted to. engage the cylindrical sleeves 36 carried by the guide rods The terminals of the semi cylindrical sleeve 59 carries bearings 60 which slidably receive the guide rods 37. The outer sides of the sleeves 59 carry the outwardly extending brackets 61 which receive the pivot pins 452 on which are rotatably mounted the outer pair of connecting links or rods 20. These rods 20 are normally arranged in a perpendicular position for a purpose which will be hereinafter more fully described. The for ward face, of the bar- 57 has secured thereto by suitable removable fastening elements the upper cutting knife .63, the lower edge of which is inclined from one end toward the other so as to provide a sheering cutting action.
In operation of the improved device, the print to be cut is placed on the table 9.2 in the ordinary manner with one ozf its marginal edges QTHILQIGd in operative position between the cuttin knives G3 and 50 after which pressure is applied to the forward lower end of the plate 22. This pressure slides the plate 22 forwardly and owing to the relation of the connecting link or bars 20 and 21 in relation to each other, the rear end of the plate 22 will he forced. upavardl while the knife carrying head D will he forced downwardly thus brin the cutting knivesinto ,en agement with each otl. and severing the marginal edge of the print. It can be seen that as the plate is pushed rearwardly the links 21 will swing their pivots and ride to a substantially vertical position, which will raise the upper end of the table. As the plate 22 pushed in. wardly the links 20 pivotally secured to the head D will he swung rearwardlv and moved downwardly out of their vertical p01- sitions and thus move the heads downwardly, As soonas pressure is released from thetable the spring 5.3 will return the same to its normal position ready for another cutting operation.
As clearly shown in Figure 9 .of the drawings, the adjusting screw d2 may be eliminated for adjusting the position of the cutting knives in relation to each other, and an .expansion coil spring '70 substituted therefor. In this form the outer ends of the connecting bars 40 for the screws 33 are provided with outwardly extending lugs '(l and these lugs carry the forwardly extending rods 72 which are slidably mounted in the lugs d1 formed on the castings 34. As shown the v expansion springs are coiled around the rods 72 and thus extend a continuous pressure upon the lugs 71 and 4d.
From the foregoing description it can be seen that an improved photograph trimming machine has been provided which is of exceptionally simple and durable construction and which will permit the operation thereof by the same hand of the operator as used for holding the prints in position,
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention; but,
I claim 1. In a cutter, a movable work receiving table, a knife carried by the table, a second knife movable in relation to the table, and means for operatively connecting the table and second knife together for synchronously bringing the knives toward each other upon movement of the table.
2. In a sheet cutter and trimmer, a swinging sheet receiving table, a rigid knife carried by the table, a sliding knife, and means for operatively connecting theta-ble and the sliding knife for synchronously moving the knives toward and away from each other upon movement of the table.
3. In a sheet cutter and: trimmer, a swinging sheet receiving table, a knife carried by the table, a sliding knife, means for synchronously moving the knives toward each other upon movement of the table, and means for adjusting the position of the knives in relation to each other.

In sheet cutting and trimming machine, a base frame, a sheet receiving table, means slidably connecting the table with the frame, a knife carried by the table, a sliding and swingin head. a knife carried by said head, and means for synchronously moving said knives toward each other upon movement of said table. In a photograph print trimming ma chine, base frame, a sliding and swinging table, a pair of connecting links pivot-ally secured to the rear end of the table and to thebase frame, a sliding and swinging head, a pair of links pivotally connected to the base frame and to the head, one of said pair of links being arranged in a perpendicular plane, and the other pair at an angle to. the

perpendicular, and knives carried by the head and table.
6. In a photographic print trimming ma chine, a base frame, a sliding and swinging work receiving table, a sliding and swinging head, a pair of links connecting the rear end of the table with the base frame, a pair of links pivotally connecting the head with the base frame, one pair of the links being arranged in a vertical plane and the other pair of links at an angle to the vertical, cutting knives carried by the head and table, and a guide plate carried by said table.
In a photographic print trimming machine, a base frame, a sliding and swinging work receiving table, a sliding and swinging head, a pair of links connecting the rear end of the table with the base frame, a pair of links pivotally connecting the head with the base frame, one pair of the links being arranged in a vertical plane and the other pair of links at an angle to the vertical, cutting knives carried by the head and table, and a guide plate carried by said table, the forward edge of the guide plate being flared upwardly to facilitate the guiding of the work between the frame and table.
8. In a photographic print trimming machine, a base frame, a sliding and swinging work receiving table, a sliding and swinging head, a knife carried by the rear edge of the table, a knife carried by said head, a pair of links pivotally connecting said rear end of the table with the base frame, a pair of links pivotally connected to the head and to said base frame, one pair of the links being arranged in a vertical plane and the other pair of links at an angle to the vertical, the pivot point of said links being arranged in transverse alignment, and a transparent guide plate carried by the upper surface of the table at the rear end thereof.
9. In a photographic print trimming machine, a base frame, a sliding and swinging work receiving table, a sliding and swing ing head arranged in transverse relation to said table, a transversely extending knife carried by the rear edge of the table, a transversely extending knife carried by said head, the forward end of the base frame bein provided with horizontally disposed slots; guide rollers carried by the forward end of the table. and positioned in said slots, a pair of links pivotally connected to said base frame and to the table adjacent the rear end thereof. a second pair of links pivotally connected to said base frame and to said head, one pair of links being arranged in a vertical plane and the other pair of links at an angle to the vertical, a graduated bar carried by one edge of said table, and a transversely curved transparent guide plate carried by the upper surface of said plate adjacent to the rear end thereof.

Ina photographic print trimming machine, a base frame, a sliding and swinging table, a sliding and swinging head, knives carried by the head and table, means slidably connecting the forward end of the table with the forward end of the base frame, a pair of links pivotally connected to the base frame adjacent to the rear edge thereof, and to the table adjacent to the rear end thereof, a second pair of links pivotally connected to the base frame, and to said head, one pair of the links being arranged in a vertical plane, and the other pair of links at an angle to the vertical, end guides carried by said table and arranged to slidably engage said head 11. In a photographic print trimming machine, a base frame a sliding and swinging table, a knife carried by the table, a sliding and swinging head, a knife carried by the head, means slidably connecting the forward end of table with the forward end of the frame, a pair of links pivotally connected to the frame and to the table adjacent to the rear ends thereof, a pair of links pivotally connected to the frame and to said head,
castings carried by said table, guide rods carried by said castings, and bearings carried by said head and arranged to slidably receive said guide rods.

In a photographic print trimming ma chine. a base frame, a. sliding and swinging table, means slidably connecting the forward end of the table with the base frame, a pair of links pivotally connected to the base frame and to the table adjacent to the rear end thereof, a sliding and swinging head, a pair of links pivotally connected to the base frame and to said head, a pair of castings carried by the opposite sides of said table, sleeves carried by said castings, outwardly extending guide rods carried by said sleeves, means for holding ,the rods against movement in the sleeves, bearings carried by said head arranged to slidably engage said guide rods, a knife carried by the rear end of said. table, a knife carried by said head, and means for adjustably connecting said castings on said table.
18, In a photographic print trimming ma chine, a base frame, including a pair of side bars and a pair of connecting end bars, the forward ends of the side bars having horizontally disposed guide slots formed therein, bosses formed on the side bars adjacent the rear ends thereof, outwardly extending feet formed on said side bars, a swinging and sliding table including a platform, corner castings carried by the forward end of the platform, a pivot pin carried by said corner castings. rollers mounted on said pins and arranged. to engage the upper and lower walls of said guide slots, rear castings carried by the rear end of said platform, sleeves formed on said castings, guide rods carried by said sleeves, a pair of links pivotally connected to said bosses and to said table, a second pair of links pivotally connected to said bosses, a swinging and sliding head, means pivotally connecting the second pair of links to said head, a transversely extending knife carried by the table, a knife carried by said head, and means for adjusting the position of the knives in relation to each other.

In a photographic print trimming machine, a base frame, a-sliding and swinging table, a sliding and swinging head, means slidably connecting the forward end of the table with the forward end of the frame, a pair of corner castings connected to the rear end of the table, said castings having slots formed therein, corner plates arranged to receive said castings, screws fitted in said slots and fitted in said plates, a connecting bar for said screws, means for adjusting the position of the plates, outwardh extending flanges formed on the upper edges of said castings, said flanges being curved outwardly, a knife carried by the rear end of said table, a transversely curved transparent guide plate fitted on said arcuate flanges, sleeves formed on said castings, rods carried by said sleeves, bearings formed on said head arranged to slidably receive said rods, a pair of links pivotally connecting the rear end of the frame with the rear end of the table, and a pair of links pivotally connecting the rear end of the frame with said head.
In a cutter, a movable work-holder, a knife carried by said work-holder, a foldable h'iounting for the work-holder and the second knife, and resilient connections between said mounting and the work-holder whereby pressure upon the work-holder will bring the knives together and release of said pres sure will effect separation of the knives.
16. In a cutter, a movable work-holder, a knife carried by said work-holder, a second knife movable relative to the work-holder, a foldable mounting for the work-holder and the second knife, and a yieldable device operatively connected with said mounting and normally maintaining said work-holder in a work receiving position, whereby pressure upon the workholder will bring the knives together, and release of said pressure will effect certain movement of the knives.
