This invention is a shingle for roofing and siding purposes, and more particularly,
shingle composed of flexible material.
The material is analogous to' that ordinarily' used in the art, being composed of a basic layer of felt, impregnated or saturated with a waterproofing agent, such as asphaituni, and provided on the Weather surface with two coatings, one of which is com posed of: a relatively high melt point as phaltuin to. resist solar heat and the other consists of granular material incorporated with thesurface coating.
The exposure of material of the foregoing character to solar heat and to the weather tends to distort the uncovered areas and margins of the shingle by curling upwardly the tree unconfined ends oi." the shingles,

As shown in the drawings, the invention is embodied, in one practical form, as a continuous strip A, one margin a of which .65 is straight and unbroken, whereas the other margin is of such formation as to produce a succession oi tabs, B, formed by a series of re-cntrant recesses 71, the form and dimensions of which recesses correspond to the shape and sizes. of the tabs of a complemental strip cut in a reversed position from the shingle strip A.
Obviously,-the number of tabs B, and the form and dimensions thereof, on the strip A may be varied as desired, but it is preferred to provide tabs of tapering formation, each having a straight lower'edpie, 0, and side edges 0, inclined to the straight lower edge o. In thus assembling the strips the free ends of the tabs B of an overlying strip are bent or deflected slightly and inserted intothe roof the appearance oi hexagonal indi- 1 vi'dual shingles, see Figure 1. Oi viously, the strips are mechanically fastened in a desirable Way, as by nailing them in position, but While the tabs are not thus mechanically fastened, the insertion of the free ends of] said tabs into the slots reduces means by which said otherwise unattached tabs are locked or retained securely with a view to overcoming that tendency of the composite material to curl upwardly under the effects of solar heat and the weather, whereby the tabs are retained in close relation to the surface of a roof or sidingiand thus preclude the entry of rain or snow, as well as'to pre vent the. tabs from being lifted out of position by the pressure of the wind.
My invention is herein shown and described as enibodiedin strip form, and While this is a preferred form, it. is not desired to restrict the invention tostrips for the reason that it may be also embodied in the form of individual or se arate shingles, adapted for assemblage to eteet a desired locking engagement for the free ends-of the overlying shingles with slots in underlyingshingles. Such construction and arrangement may obviously be made by those skilled in the art, and, accordingly it is unnecessary to illustrate or further describe, the same.
Having thus fully described the invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent" is:
