Description
UNITED STATES Nratifierr B. F. STURTEVANT, OF SKOWHEGAN, MAINE, ASSIGNOR TO E. TOWNSEND.
PINCERS FOR LASTING- BOOTS AND SHOES.
To all whom t may concern: I
Be it known that I, B. F. STURTEVANT, of Skowhegan, in the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Pincers for Lasting Shoes and Boots, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part` of this specification, in which- Figures l, 2, and 3, are different views to which reference will be made hereafter.
There boots arelasted by hand the leather is sometimes drawn over the last by pincers and tacked or nailedv down one side at a time. At other times separa-te pincers have been employed for each 'side of the leather, the two being brought together by a screw.
My invention consists in the `use of compound or double pincers by which shoes may be expeditiously lasted wit-hout the use of screws or other contrivances for the purpose of bringing them together.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invent-ion I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the accompanying drawings A, A2, are the jaws of one` of the pincers, B, B2, the jaws of the other. The jaws A2, B2,
are pivoted to the handles C, at The other jaws A, B, being connected with the same handle by a slot and pin at y. The four jaws thus constructed and arranged are united together by the pivot D.
Operation: One of the handles C, being held in each hand, the pincers A, A2, are closed upon the leather upon one side of the last, and the pincers B, B2, upon the leather on the other side the two handles are then brought together as in Fig. l and are held by onehand while the leather is secured to the last by the other.
I do not claim a lasting tool in which the two sets of jaws are brought together by means of a screw. This is a well known method of constructing such tools.
I am also aware that the exterior aws of such tools have been caused to close upon a central step or block thus forming a species of compound pincers or lasting tool but* .What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within described instrument for lasting boots, constructed and operating in the manner substantially as herein set forth.
