Description
TT STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. WILDER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
MACHINE FOR CUTTING OUT SOLES 0F BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,451, dated July 29, 1856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAs. W. WILDER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Cutting Soles of Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a plan.
My invention has for its object the production of a machine for cut-ting soles that shall be of simpler construction, and less cost than those at present in general use.
To enable others skilled in the art to make use of my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
Inthe accompanying drawings A, is the frame work of the machine, B, the driving shaft which carries the ily wheel C, and is set in motion by a treadle or otherwise. The crank D, upon the end of this shaft is connected with the lever E, by the pitman F. This lever is pivoted to the frame work at f, and is connected with the heads Gr, and H, by the rods K, L, as seen in the drawings; the knives g, are curved to suit the contour of the sole to be cut, and are set in clamps or holders h., which are suitably secured to the heads by screws or otherwise, this however forms no part of my invention, and need not be further described,
By means of the connections thus eX- plained, the knives are vibrated around the points p, g, and are alternately brought down to the table as the main shaft revolves. The knives are brought into position before being secured in place by adjusting th-em to the edge of a suitable pattern in a manner which will be readily understood. The position of the knives with respect to the table- M, is adjusted by means of the screws m, and nuts a', and y. These screws play in slots in the ends of the heads by which means an increased throw may be given to the latter when the knives are set to cut very large or very small soles, to prevent interference between the knives and the opposite heads. i
Operation: The knives being adjusted to a pattern of the size of the sole to be cut, the main shaft is revolved and the leather suitably cut into strips, is fed in upon the table M, against the rest N, and as the knives descend, the soles are cut off and fall between the rest and the table.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Arranging and vibrating the knives around the centers p, g, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein set forth.
J. W. WILDER.
