i This invention relates to a plate roll for printing and 1s deslgned primarily for use in connection with plates for textile and 1 wall paper printing, but it is to be understood that a roll, in accordance with this invention, can be employed for any purposes for which it isfound applicabl and the invention has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a plate roll adapted to have detachably secured thereto a printing plate in cylindrical form and with the roll having means engaging with the plate for maintaining the opposed edges of the latter inabutting, overlapping engagement, to provide for the matching of the freeed es of the design on the plate whereby a continuous design is set up for printing upon fabric or wall paper.
As is well known in textileor wall paper printing, the design is an inherent part of a printing roll, and to produce the same,
the roll which is generally in the form of a hollow copper body, although in some instances it is in the form of a solid copper cylindrical body, has the periphery thereof engraved or otherwise provided throughout with the design or a portion thereof that is to be printedon the material. After the printing operation the engraved roll is discarded, but in some instances smoothed off to enable the engraving on the periphery thereof a new design or a ortion thereof, and which method 'entai s considerable time, expense and loss. form of a true cylinder and secured to the plate roll, the free edges of the design will be matched to form a continuous design which is to be printed on the material or transferred to be printed on the material during tae operation of offset printing. The horizontal edges of the plate 1 are bevelled, as at 3, 1, so that when the plate is in the position shown in Figure 5, the said edges not only abut, but will overlap to provide for the matching of the free edges of a design whereby a continuous design is set up. The bevelled edge 3 extends at an inward inclination whereas the bevelled edge -l extends at an outward inclination, or in other words, the bevels are disposed in parallel incline planes to provide for the positioning of the edges in the manner as heretofore set forth, when the edges are Secured to each end of the plate 1, at the inner face thereof, and flush with the bevelled edges 3, 1 is a pair. of attaching bars 5, 6 which extends from one side edge to the other side edge of the plate 1. A plate roll in accordance with this invention comprises a body portion formed of two semi-cylindrical sections and means coacting with the ends of said sections for maintaining them in abut-ting engagement. One of the sections of the roll body is generally referred to by the reference character 13 and the other by the reference character 11. As both sections of the roll body are of like construction, but one will he described, as the description of one will apply to the other. Each roll body section is formed with a reduced extension at each .end and each extension is fo'ined of an inner portion 15 having a tapered periphe'ry 16. The inner face of the section 13 is formed with a series of spaced sockets 19, and in which are adapted to extend, when the roll sections are in abutting engagement, holding pins 20 which are secured to and project from the inner face of the section 1 1. The pins 20 when engaged in the sockets 19 prevent the sections 13 and 14 from shifting relatively to each other.
The inner face of the section 13 is cut away to provide a triangular shaped pocket 21 which opens at the periphery of said section, and the section 14, at its inner face is cut away to provide a triangular shaped pocket 22 which opens at the periphery of the section 1 1. The pockets extend from one end to the other end of said roll sections and are of the same depth, but the pocket 22 is of greater width than the pocket 21 throughout. The pocket 21 is adapted to re ceive the attaching bar 5 and the pocket. 22 the attaching bar 6. The width of the inner end of the attaching bar 5 is less than the width of the pocket 21 at its inner end. hen the attaching bar 5 is mounted in the pocket 21 the inclined face 7 thereof abuts against the inclined wall 23 of the pocket 21. The attaching bar 5 when mounted in the pocket 21 docs not extend completely over the bottom of the pocket 21. The attaching bars 5 and 6 coact with the pockets 21 and 22, to couple or socure the plate 1 to the roll body in the 1nanner as'shown in Figure 5. By shiftingthe roll sections 13 and 1 1 to a position so that the inner faces thereof will extend at an inclination with respect to each other, the attaching'bars 5 and 6 can be removed from the pockets 21 and whereby the plate 1 can be shifted from off the roll body.

After'the plate 1 has been rcmm'ed from the sections '13, 141:, and the roll body can then be employed for other plates. The connecting of the plate to the roll body in the manner as stated, sets up the plate in the formof a true cylinder and with the opposed edges of the plate in abutting,
overlapping engagement, to provide for the matching of the free edges of a design whereby a continuous design is set up when printing.
As the plate is ccnstructed independently of the roll, after the" plate has been used, it does not necessitate the discarding or smoothing of a roll for when the plate is removed from the roll another plate can be immediately attached thereto. 7
It is thought that the many advantages of a plate roll, in accordance with this inven- 1 tion, for use in connection with plates for text1le and wall paper printing can be read- 1ly understood from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accomq panying' drawings, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as il-' lustrated and described, yet 1t 1s to be underused, it is stood that changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

A plate roll comprising a body portion formed of a pair of send-cylindrical sections adapted to be dctachably secured together in a batting engagement and each having its flat face thereof provided with a lengthwise extending triangular shaped pocket for the reception of an attaching bar carried at one end of a bendable printing plate for connecting the plate in cylindrical form against said body portion when said sections are in abutting engagement, each of said pockets of triangular contour throughout, and means engaging with the ends of said sections when in abutting engagement for detachably securing said sections together.

A plate roll comprising a body portion formed of a pair of semi-cyuindrical sections a .la te:;l to he detachably secured together in ahntting engagement and each having a face thereof provided with a lengthwise extending triangular shaped pocket for the reception of an attaching bar carried at one end of a bendable printing plate torconnecting the plate in cylindrical form against said body portion when said sections are in abutting engagement, each oi said pockets of triangular contour throughout, and means engagingwith the ends of said sections when in abutting engagement tor detachably securing said sections together, each of said pockets opening at the inner face and at the periphery of a section.

A plate roll con'iprising a body portion tornied of a pair of semi-cylindrical sections adapted to be detachably secured together in abutting engagement and each having a flat face thereof provided with a lengthwise extending triangular shaped pocket for the reception of an attaching bar carried at one end of bendable printing plate for connecting the plate in cylindrical form against said body portion when said sections are in abutting engagement, each of said pockets of triangular contour throughout, and means engaging with the ends of said sections when n abutting engagement for detachably securing said sections together, each of said pockets opening at the inner face and at the periphery of a section, one of said pockets being of greater width than the other.

A plate roll comprising a body portion formed of a pair of detachably connected abutting sections provided on their inner faces with means opening at the periphery of said body portion to receive attaching bars of a bendable metallic plate for detachably connecting the la ter in cylindrical form on said body portion, and means for detachably connecting said sections in abutting engagement, and inter-engaging means provided on the inner faces of said sections to prevent the shifting of one relative to the other when the sections are in opposed relation.
