The invention relates to a sign composed of a collection of 1ndiv1dual elements or units certain of which are character-bearing ele-v face and give the effect of av one-piece sign,
also, to provide whereby the separate elements or units may be combined to abut one another along sharply defined edges by which a proper and precise alignment of the elements may be obtained during the assembly of the elements in forming the sign.

Referring to the drawings l l represents the sign. 2 represents the individual elements or units of which the sign is composed and which are self-attaching to one another to form collectively the coinplete sign, each of the elements exceptingY preferably those elements at the opposite ends of the sign and excepting, alsospace forming elements, if such are employed, bear some character, as for example a letter, and which letters collectively, when the elements or units are fastened together, form the 'matter indicated by the sign as a word or words.
Each of the elements 2 comprises aV body preferably of metal plate and square or r ctangular in forni. The body is provided on its opposite sides with very sharply defined edges 4 and 5 respectively preferably obtained by cross-cutting the metal. In order lto retain the elements .in place each of the tongues on any one clement is provided with a projecting nib or boss 1l which, when the tongue of the one element is inserted into the socket formed by the flanges of the adjacent element will spring these lflanges slightly owing tothe elasticity of the metal and, when the elements are properly combined, will fitinto holes12 cut in the flanges.y By this means the elements are securely fastened together, but in a manner permittingof their being disconnected when forcibly pulled apart.` I prefer, also,

In practice it is the purpose to provide a large number of individual elements including character-bearing elements, space-forming elements and elements for the ends of the sign or end pieces. From these elements such are chosen as Will when combined form any desired indication or sign.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent oi the United States A sign comprising a number of individual cliaractenbearing elements, each of said elements comprising a body on which the character is displayed and which body is pr0- vided on its opgosite sides with free edges, said body having also, at its top and betteln, extensions turned to extend over said body at the back and form flanges with sockets beneath said flanges between them and the body, said flanges being provided With tongues projecting laterally therefrom With extension beyond the adjacent side edge ot the body, said tongues being` turned to lie in substantially the saine plane with sa`d sockets whereby the tongues extending 'from he flanges on one element will enter the socletsand be retained by the fianges of an adjacent element when said elements are brought together With edges abutting.
