COMBINATION BED AND SETTEE.

This invention relates to furniture and it aims to provide novel convertible or combination articles which may serve as a plurality of different articles.

Another object is to provide a novel form convertible from a settee to a bed and in which the back of the settee serves as the supporting means in the bed, in combination with detachable legs.

Still another object is to provide the back for disposition at different heights accord ing to the upholstering of the settee and with said legs extensible to cooperatewith such feature.

It is further aimed to provide a form of the invention capable of use as either a table or bed and capable of folding into compact form to occupy minimum space when not in use.

I also aim to provide a novel construction of bed spring in connection with the back which is maintained highest at its center to overcome sagging.

Various additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating embodiments thereof.

Referring first to the form of Figures 50 1 and 6, it may serve as a bench or settee as it has a seat 10 and sides 11.. Sides 11 are connected together in any suitable manner as by means of a container or depository 12 consisting of wooden boards fastened to the 55 sides as shown. A suitable panel-like supporting body back is. provided at 14, one side of which is preferably plain as in Figure 1 Such back 1% is fasteneddetachably and pivotally between sides 11 by removable pins 15 insertable selectively into openings 16 and 17 of the sides and openings 18 of the back. This back may be swungto the horizontal or bed. position of Figure 2, where it rests on the seat or closure 10. As such seat 10 may in some instances have'a cushion thereon or be upholstered as at 19in Figure 3, the pins 15 maybe transferred from openings 16 to the openings 17 to accommodate use of such upholstery and enable the back to rest thereon.

In the horizontal positions of Figures 2 and 3, the back is held against pivotal movement and efficiently supported by legs 20. These legs are in extensible sections 21 and 22 to enable them to assume the different lengths necessary in the forms of use suggested in Figures 2 and 3. Sections 21 have attaching pins 25 extending therefrom and removably insertable into sockets 26 at the corners of the back 14. o

On the back, in the position shown in Figures 2 and 3, suitable bedding such as a mattress, sheets and covers and the usual springs of an ordinary bed, may be placed. The uppermost surface in such position, which the rear surface in the position of Figure 1. is provided with a bed spring 27 as best shown in Figures 4 to 6.

Bed spring 27 comprises a plurality of metallic rings 28 connected by metallic wire links 29 through medium of hooks 30. The outermost rings 28 have contractile metallic coil springs 31 fastened thereto at 32 and by eyelets 33 to flanges 3 1 of attaching bars 35. Bars 35 are fastened to the sides and ends of the back 1 by adjustable bolts 36 to the end that the position of the bars 35 may be adjusted to maintain the spring Particular attention is called to the fact that starting from the ends of the bars 35 which are located both at the sides and ends of the back, the springs 31 are fastened at progressively increasing heights to the end that the bed spring 27 will be highest at its longitudinal and transverse center lines, thereby rendering it more stable and minimixing the chances of sagging thereof through constant use.

This form ordinarily constitutes a settee or bench as in Figure 1 and the spring 27 faces the Wall of the room and is ordinarily obscured from view. In this condition, the legs may be stored in the depositary 12 and the latter may also receive hats or such other articles as desired. The back 14c may be readily swung to the position of Figures 2 and 3 When desired to have the legs 20 applied thereto.

The modified form of Figure 7 is combination table and bed. It has the panellike supporting body back 14 similar to that of the other views so that as shown in that Figure the closed surface will form a table top. A mounting frame 28 is provided for back 14:, particularly having uprights or standards 99 connected by the rods 30 and 31 at top and bottom respectively. Back 14 by pins 32 is pivotally connected to standards 29. Thus back 14 may be swung to reverse the surfaces and present the spring 27 uppermost to the end that a bed will be provided. The legs 20 are also used in this form and transferable from one side of the back to the other so as to support it regardless of which surface is uppermost. hen this form is not in use, the legs are removed and placed against the wall or otherwise accommodated While the back 1 L is swung to a vertical or position compactly folded with respect to the frame 28 in which condition it may be conveniently placed against a Wall of the room.

Various changes may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of the invention.

I claim as my invention An article of furniture having a seat, sides supporting said seat and each having a vertical row of openings therein, a back, pivot pins insertable selectively through said openings and into said back, said back being adapted for swinging to a substantially horizontal position resting on said seat, said back having sockets, and supporting legs for removable connection in said sockets, and said legs being extensible for the purpose specified.
