UNITE sars PATENT *l FICE.
CROSSING.
Application filed December 8, 1924.
My present invention has reference to life saving means and is in the nature of a warning for vehicles approaching a railway track.
In carrying out my invention, it is my purpose-to arrange on the roadway at the opposite sides of a railway track angularly disposed obstructions, so that the wheels of a vehicle on the road will separately contact with such obstructions and thereby warn the driver of the Vehicle that he is approaching the track.
To the attainment of the above broadly stated objects and others which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference is to be had to the drawings which accompany and which form part of this application.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a railway crossing provided with the improvement.
Figure 2 is a. sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates a railway track and 2 a crossing that traverses the track.
On the crossing, at a suitable distance to the opposite sides oi the railway, 1 arrange angular obstructions. Preferably I embed in the roadway pipe members 3, and these pipe members may also serve as water conduits. The road surface is arranged over the top of the pipe members, as indicated by the numeral 4:. It is to be understood that the top portions of the pipe members are not arranged below the surface of the roadway, so that even were the road surface not arranged thereover the pipes would serve as obstructing elements for the wheels Serial No. 754,612.
of vehicles traveling over the roadway. In the showing of Figure 1 of the drawings, the obstructions are arranged at the same angle but it is obvious that the said obstructions may be arranged at opposite angles, it being, however, especially desirable that the same are arranged at such angles that all of the wheels of the vehicle will separately contact therewith, and the jar thus inflicted on the driver of the vehicle will fully warn him that he is approaching a railway and that due caution must be observed. By arranging the road surface over the pipe members, the latter are materially reinforced, while in addition to this, the covering a will not inflict injury to the tires of vehicles traveling thereover or cause the skidding of such vehicles should the tires thereof be brought into contact with the comparatively smooth outer surface of the said pipe members.
Preferably the conduit pipes 3 are twelve inches in diameter, and have seven inches embedded in the roadway so that five inches will project thereabove. Also the space be tween the rails of the track are filled with gravel to the level of the said rails to provide a free passage for travel over the track.
Having described the invention, I claim A warning means for roadways which traverse a railway, comprising angularl'y arranged pipe members which are partly embedded in the roadway at distances from the opposite sides of the railway, and said pipe members having a covering of the roadway surface.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
GEORGE D. XVORLEY.
