Description

May 18 1926. 1,585,537
J. a. DAVIS SAFETY SWITCH CONSTRUCTION FOR RAILWAYS Filed Jan. 21, 1925 Fa 0Z6 MENTOR WITNESS: ATTORNEY Patented May 18, 19 26.
UNITED STATES JOHN B. DAVIS, 03 WHEELING, VJES'I VIRGINIA.
SAFETY-SWITCH CONSTRUCTION FOR RAILWAYS.
Application filed January The object of my invention is the provision of a simple, easily adjusted and strong safety switch construction, calculated to prevent derailment when a train is passing the switch.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same is read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of a switch embodying the preferred form of my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged plan showing my novel safety construction set for a clear main track.
Figure 3 is a of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an enlarged diametrical section through the signal lamp stand.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
I show in Figure 1 main line track rails 1 and 2, switch rails 3 and 4 leading into a' turnout 5, a transverse connection 6 between the switch rails 3 and 4 and a rotary member 7, and an appropriate handle 8 on said rotary member for turning the same about its axis and thereby adjusting the switch rails. I also show a lamp stand 8 in which is journaled an upright rock shaft 9, equipped with a signal lamp 10 and also equipped with a rotary disk 11, connected through a rod 12 with the said rotary memher 7 Manifestly, when the member 7 is turned about its axis to adjust the switch rails 3 and 4, the signal lamp will be turned to indicate the state of the switch and the disk 11 will also be turned, the latter for the movement of the pivoted frog point 12, comprised in my novel safety construction, the said point 12 being pivoted at 13, and being connected by a rod 14 with the said disk 11.
The point 12 is shown in cross section n Figure 3, and by reference to said figure it will be understood that the point 12 is provided with a wide base 15 having rounded edges; also, that the rod 14: is connected to the point 12- through the medium of a screw 16, threaded into the base 15 and pivotally connected at 17 to the rod 14.
In addition to the point 12 characterized as described, my novel safety construct-ion includes a base plate 18, spiked at 19 to cross section on line .--o
21, 1925. serial No. 3,860.
cross ties 20 and a V-shaped frog 21 riveted or otherwise connected at 22 in a fixed manner to and .on the plate 18. The arms of the frog 21 adjacent to the heels of the rails 3 and 4; have their opposed sides recessed as designated by 23 and best shown in Figure 3, each recess including a lower undercut portion 24; adapted to receive one side of the frog point base 15 with a view to preventing casual upward movement of said point 12 when the same is positioned against either of the said arms. Manifestly, when the point 12 is arranged as shown in Figure 2, a continuous main truck rail will be afforded which by cooperation with the flanges of the wheels of a passingtrain will preclude derailment of the train at the frog. Again, when the point 12 is moved to the position opposite to that shown in Figure 2, a continuous rail and a continuous engagement for the flanges of the wheels of a train will be afforded between the switch rail 3 and the portion of the frog 21 at the right of -Figure 2. Notwithstanding the practical advantages of my novel construction, it will be apparent that the construction is simple and inexpensive; also, that when the point 12 is positioned against either of the recessed frog arms, the point 12 will not only be held against upward movement by the frog arm, but will be braced and reinforced against lateral movement by said frog arms.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention best shown in Figure 2, the recesses 23 are formed This manifestly contributes to the strength and durability of the frog and assures strong ln'acing of the point 12 in both positions of the same.
I have specifically described the preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart an exact. understanding of said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to confine myself to the specific description herein, my novel invention being defined by my appended claim within the scope of which changes may be made without depart 111;; from my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
In a railway construction, the combination with main track rails, turnout rails and movable switch rails, of a plate fixed under the continuous portions of the main track,
by offsetting the frog arms turnout and switch rails, a frog fixed With respect to said plate and having divergent arms alined with the heel portions of the switch rails and also having recesses in the opposed sides of said arms and undercut chambers in communication with said recesses, and a. frog point pivoted to said frog and movable in the space between the recessed arms thereof and having a comparatively Wide base the edge portions of which are adapted to enter the undercut chambers in communication with the recesses oi the arms, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix ture.
my signa- JOHN B. DAVIS.
