UNITED. STATES- HUGO GERNSBACK, 0F NEW YORK, NYY.
PATENT OFFICE.
appucauen mea september 1e, 1924. serial No. 738,539.
' This invention electrical switches.
An object of the invention is the prorelates to 4vision of a switch having a movable plunger adapted to be retained between a pair of spring contact arms when the switch 1s in: operative position.
A further object is to provide a coil spring surrounding the plunger which is placed under tension when the plunger is projected and which will move the plunger to an inoperative osition as soon as the end of the plunger is isengaged from the spi-ing contact arms.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the- .of arms 3 are arranged on the back of the block and secured thereto by means of .bolts 4. The ends of the bolts project from the back of the block and are adapted to receive nuts 5 forming binding posts for lead wires not shown). As shown the terminals'of t e spring arms are extended over the ends of the block as indicated at 6. The block is ada ted to be arran ed in the rearpof a panel i; which is 'provided with an opening 8 in alinement with the opening in the block. The arms 3 extend at an angle from the'rear face of the block toward each other as indicated at 9 and are provided with oifset ends 10.
A plunger is mounted in the openings, in the block and the panel and is adapted to bridge the space between the ends 10 of the s ring contact arms when the switch is in closed position. As shown a sleeve nut 11 is arranged in the openings 2 and 8 and is provided with external threads to engage the internal threads formed in the opening 2. A washer 12 surrounds this nut and the nut is provided with an enlarged head 13 which contacts with the outer face of the lcontact arms when the washer. A plunger is mounted within the nut and the plunger consistsof a handle portion 14 and 'an inner portion 15. As shown, the handle portion is provided with a head 16 onits outer end 'to facilitate operation of the switch and intermediate the 'ends it isprovided with a collar 17 which is l adapted to engage the head 13 of the nut to limit the inward movement of the plunger. The inner end of the handle portion of the plunger is provided with a central threaded bore -18 adapted to receive athreaded portion 19 formed on the inner portion of the plunger. A coil spring 20 is arranged within the nut beneath the inner end of thehandle portion of the plunger. The inner portion o the. plunger is provided with an enlargement or ball 21 on its inner end adapted to engage the ends 10 of the Spring switch is inthe operative position shown in full lines in Figure 2 of the drawings.
The operation of the device will be apparent from the foregoing description. When 30 the switch is to be turned on the plunger is moved inwardly to the full line position shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. The space between the ends 10 of the spring contact arms. is normally less than the diameter of the ball 21 as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 of the drawings whereby the inward movement of the plunger forces the arms out under tension and causes them to engage the ball 21 and hold the plunger in its inner position. While in this position. the coil spring 20 is placed under tension. When the switch is to be turned 0E the plunger is moved outwardly and as soon as the head 421 becomes disengaged from the ends 10 of the spring contact arms the spring 20 moves the plunger outwardly to its limit as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 2 of the drawings to insure breaking the circuit.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement `of parts may be resorted to without departing om the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having describedmy invention, I claim z.,
In a device of the character descri a lll base having a threaded opening, .a sleeve nut mounted in said opening, aplunger mounted in said sleeve, said plunger comprising a handle rtion and an inner portion smaller in ameterv than the handle portion, the inner end of said handle ortion being provided with a threaded ore vadapted to receive the end of said inner portion, a. spring arranged in said sleevey nut -surrounding the inner portion of said plunger and adapted to engage the end of said l0 handle portion to normally /maintain the the inner end of said plunger whereby said 15 arms will be placed under tension when said plunger is moved inwardly and wvlll Yretain saidplun er in said position.
In testimonyw ereof I affix my signature.
HUGO GERNSBACK.
