INSERT HOLDER FOR COMMODXTY CONTROL DEVICES.
Application filed February This invention pertains to check and paper holders for use in connection With commodity control devices, being applicable to any and all uses, and in any and all 'machines of such general character.
The present invention has, for its object, amongst others, to provide meansfor carrying a card or the like, adapted to receive impressions thereupon or designations therethrough or tliereinto, Whose physical properties 'are such as to render it unsuitable in certain aspects for coa-@tion with other means ,in functional performances.
fr further object of the invention, is, to provide means for definite registration between the carrier or holder and its contained material, and also with coacting mechanisms for successive performances or for the recognition of performances, or records previously made thereon.
Another object of the invention is to provide means of identification of the holder and to utilize these means in cooperation with` suitable means in the machines with Which it is used, to make an identifying record each time the carrier 'is used as an actuator.
The present invention is designed more particularly for use as a holder or protecting frame for an insert of paper or other material, as Well as to provide substantial n'ieans for operating mechanisms,
to provide means to `cooperate with these actuated mechanisms for detachably maintaining the holder in the machine for a desired period of operations, to provide a permanent article for use both for successive operations with and on the same insert or for a. like purpose With successive inserts and to carry identifying means to be used, when desired, in recording each time the holder performs itsv actuating function. It is designed for use in connection With the insert so as to obviate all liability of inaccuracies or failure to properly function as is liable to happen if the paper or the like is used separately owing to the tendency of such materials to buckle and crease.
They device with its insert is designed pri# certainv functions of Which perform on theinsert; v
i2, 192 serial No. 444,502.
marily for use in connection With recording and totalizing mechanisms and allied appliances, and to combine in the one device the function of check holder and actuator for the mechanisms with which it is used.
he holder serves also in lieu of a key, as
has heretofore been proposed for the pur pose of actuating' a mechanism and for recording the identity of such an appliance, and enables one to clearly dispense With the employment of such key. Y i. machine of such general character is described and illustrated in the copending application of H. R. Brand, Serial Number 283,817, filed Feb. 29, 1919.
As a particular example of use or adaptation, the invention is intended as a frame for a guest check in restaurant, on which check is listed the commodity' orders and the itemized prices therefor, and which check is variously handled during the time it serves its purpose.
The invention has for its further object to provide simple and eliicient means for centering the check or paper to keep'y it in proper alignment and to detachably lock the insert in such aligned position; provision also being made to facilitate the entry of the paper into the holder, and to insure the presentation of the holder in propeiposition to the machine which it actuates and with which it cooperates.
(lt-her objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is capable of embodiment in a variety of forms, some of the most eiiicient of which only l have chosen to herein illustrate.
Referring to the drawings in which such forms are shoWn Figure l is a top plan vievv of my iniproved check holder.
Figure 2 is the enlarged transverse section through the same as on the line 2-2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a transverse .section as on the line 3-3 of Figure l.
Figure 4 is an end vieW.

tand 2 consists ot an upper plate l and a lower plate 2, disposed in parallelism with a slight space 8 between them and spaced at opposite edges by 'suitable strips 3 and Ll, the upper and lower plates and the spacing strips being united by suitable means such as rivets or the like 5 as seen in Figures l and 2. rlhis forms a unitary structure and constitutes what may be termed a skeleton trame or holder having the openingsand 6 in the respective plates l and 2 through which the check or other paper is to be displayed when in use.
rllhe holder is closed at one end by suitable means such as an intermediate strip l preferably of substantially the same thickness as the strips 3 and el, and thus preserving' the space 8. rlhis space at the closed end has therein a projection 9, preferably partot' the strip 7, and which is shown as having inclined faces to cooperate With a similarly sha1 ed notch l0 in the end of an insert or check ll, which is carried in the space 8, see Figure G, This serves as an abutment for the insert ll and also acts to center the check as it is placed in position and to keep the latter in proper alignment.
The holder thus formed is provided alongone edge With the multiplicity oic perforations 12, see Figures l and 6, which perforations are preferably equally spaced apart and extend through both the upper and lower plates for a purpose which will be hereinafter described, and as will be readily understood in reference to Figure 2.
As a means ot compelling the proper presentation oi' the holder to the machine with which it is used, as hereinafter described; and in order to strengthen the holder which it is designed to construct of sufficiently light and thin material, such, for instance, as sheet metal or it may be sulliciently rigid celluloid or indurated fibre or the like, I form the loir-fer plate with longitudinal belges 13, as .een clearly in Figure 2, the perforations to extend through the coincit bulge as is also clearly illus rated in s latter feature is deemed iml e bulge not only serves the tunctioris hereinbefore mentioned, but it also Lee-1,995
provides ttor clearance of the material either removed upset from the insert or check when it is operated upon by the punches or equivalent devices in the machine in which it is used.
'lhe longitudinally disposed ridges 'i3 ou either side reach oit the frame are or difterent sizes, as appears from l and 2, so as to cooperate with similarly shaped parts in the cooperating machine, and Wil always insure the correct positioning ot the holder in the cooperating` machine.
