L. MASSETTE SPINNING TOP Filed Nov.' so. 1 923 ZOU/'5 WdiSe// Patented May I8, 1926.
LOUIS A. MASSETTE, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SPINNING TOP.
Application led November 30, 1923.
My invention relates to spinning-tops and has for its objects to provide a top which will spin on either end means for holding the spinning pintles securely in the ends of the 5 top and means for operating the top on bearings before releasing the same for spinning on the floor or other surface.
Vith these and other objects in view, I will now describe the means by which these oblo `jects are attained, referring to the drawings forming a partof my specification, and using reference numerals to indicate the several parts.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of Iny top.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line of Fig. 1, showing the means of securing the spinning-pintles to the body of the top and to each other.
F ig. 3 is a perspective view of my top and bracket on which it may be rotated and from which it may be released.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 is the body of my top which is provided with a pair of deep grooves, 2, adapted to receive a string, not shown, for the purpose of imparting movement to the top. A spinningpintle 3 is provided with a collar 4- which is secured to the pintle 3 or made integral therewith, and the end of this pintle projects beyond the end of the top a sufhcient distance to forni a bearing or axle on which the top may be rotated in a bracket as shown in Fig. 3, or the top may be supported on the end 0f this pintle while spinning, if it is desired to spin it upon this end. 'Ihe collar 4 is counter-sunk in the end of the top as shown in Fig. 2. Another spinning-pintle 5 is provided for the opposite end which is extended at 6 to form a bearing or axle on Serial No. 677,659.
as shown in Fig. 3, and which also serves as a pivot-point on which the top is supported while spinning on a surface.
spinning-pintle 5 is also provided with a flange 7 adapted to conform to the contour of the top, and its opposite end is bored and interiorly threaded to receive one end of the pintle 3 which is threaded at 8. The pintles 3 and 5 are thus securely held together by said threaded engagement. bracket 9 is provided with a bearing 10 which is open on one side, and an oppositely disposed bearing 11 open on one side, thus forming gate-ways from which the top may be released while it is revolving and may be released on either spinning-pintle, or it may be held on the bracket until it spends its force.
From the foregoing description the construction and operation of my top will be readily understood. Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim is:
In a spinning-top, the combination with a bracket provided with extended arms having pintle receiving bearings on each arm, with a top provided with a spinning pintle at either end, one of which pintles is provided with a collar adapted to engage one end of the top and having its opposite end screw-threaded, another pintle provided with a flange adapted to engage the opposite end of the top and having its inner end screwthreaded and adapted to receive and hold n LOUIS A. MASSETIE.
