J. AJMURNIN ADVERTISING DEVICE Filed July 16. 1923 INVENTOR 7 @ZZJM WITNESS:
JOHN A. MURNIN, orrr'rrsaune, KANSAS.
. anvnn'rrsme nnvrcn.v
Application filed July 16, 1923.- SerialNo. 651,860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. MURNIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates the provision of an advertising device in the nature of a wheel attachment, which embodies amongst other features a disk adapted to bemounted upon the hub of the wheel and carry advertising matter, with means for maintaining the disk in a stationaryposition so as to properly present the advertising matter to view, the disk in no way interfering with the rotation of the wheel.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of an advertising device of the character above mentioned which can be uickly and conveniently mounted upon the ub of an ordinary spoke wheel, giving wherein the latter the appearance of a diskwheel, and at the same time effectively advertising the subject matter appearing on one side of the disk.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wheel equipped with the advertising device forming the'subject matter of this invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the wheel.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2,.looking in the direction. of the arrows.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 10
I indicates a spoked wheel of the design generally em loyed on motor operated vehicles, the hub 0 which is represented at 11.
The advertising device forming the subject matter 'of the present invention essentially embodies a ca 12 designed to accommodate itself to the ub 11 of the wheel, the
cap being provided with diametrically 0'pposed threaded openings 13, each of which receives a threaded retaining element 14 adapted to bear against the hub 11 to hold the cap positioned thereon. This cap extends a slight distance .beyond the outer end 0 of the hub and is threaded as at 15 to accommodate a nut 16, the latter being provided with transverse passages 17 arranged so that two of said passages will communicate with a transverse bore formed in the cap 12 to allow a cotter pin or the like.
18 to pass through the nut and cap as shown. The cap is formed with an annular flange at ,one end, and positioned between the nut 16 and the flange 19 is a collar 20 of subm stantially 'L-sha ed formation in cross section. This coliar is riveted or otherwise suitably secured as at 24 to the advertising device proper which is in the nature of a disk 25. The collar reposes upon roller 7 bearings 24:, which of course surround the reduced portion of the cap 12. The flange 19 is formed with an annular groove which accommodates a felt washer or the like 26,
' the latter bearing against the adjacent side of the collar 20. The nut 16 is formed with i a similar groove to accommodate a felt washer 27 arranged to bear against the opposed side of the collar 20. This collar is formed with an oil passage 28, and the felt washers 26 and 27 respectively are adapted to be saturated with lubricant to keep the parts properly oiled and minimize friction.
The disk 25 is dish shaped and is provided with a central opening to receive the cap and collar above described, it being noted that the disk reposes upon one branch of the collar 20, which as above stated is substantially L-sha ed. in cross section. The' outer face of this disk is provided with advertising matter arranged above the'hub of the wheel where it can be readily viewed by everyone. It is to be understood that the disk 25 and the collar upon which it is supported remains stationary while the wheel 1% 10 rotates, which fact maintains the advertising matter properly positioned to be readily read by others. For this purpose I make use of a weight 29, the latter being secured to the inner face of the disk and 10 adjacent the lower edge thereof as clearly shown in Fi res 1 and 2. The device in its entirety is very simple in construction and can be conveniently mounted upon the hubof any wheel or removed therefrom as the occasion requires.
While it is believed that from the fore-' wheels, comprisin going descri tion, the nature and advantages of t e invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may. be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
All advertising device for use on vehicle a cap ada ted to receive the hub of t e wheel, a ange at one end of the cap, -,means for securing the cap to the hub, a nut threaded on the outer end of the cap, a collar surrounding the cap and arranged between the flan e and said nut, roller bearings interposed etween the ca and collar, the confronting faces of sald flange and nut having annular grooves, felt washers arranged in said grooves and bearing against the opposed sides of said collar, sald collar havlng an oil passage therein, a disk having a central opening to receive the cap, means for securing the disk to the collar, said disk having advertising matter on one side thereof, and means for holding the disk and collar stationary as the wheel rotates for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOHN A. MURNIN.
