IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-BELLS.
I Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,446, dated J anuary 5, 1875 application filed April 11, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMOS L. SWAN, of Cherry Valley, in the county of ()tsego and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Door-Bells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of. the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a plan view of my bell, and Fig. 2 is a sec tional view of the same. Fig. 3 is an outside view of my bell.
This invention has relation to improvements in house and signal gong bells; and it consists, first, in the cam and swinging sector, pivoted together and arranged in connection with the hammer-lever, a pivoted connectingarm, and a stop-pin, whereby the desired motion is given to the hammer; second, in the construction and novel arrangement of the pivoted key, connecting-arm, and cam, whereby a double orsingle action of the hammer may be secured at option.
1n the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a sector-shaped lever, which is pivoted to the under side of the base-plate B, which is recessed underneath to receive the sector and the remaining parts of the operating mechanism, presently to be described. The plate B is provided with a circumscribin g flange, b, bounding the recess a, which is perforated at c for the passage of the pull-wire cl, and is provided with lugs 6 extending outward from its edge, for the passage of suitable fastening-screws. A post, 0, extends upward from the upper side of the bed-plate for the attachment of the bell D. The sector-lever A is slotted at f upon a curve having its center at the pivot g of said lever, said slot playing about a stop, h, which is fixed to the bed-plate and extends through the slot. To one horn, 7c, of the sector is attached the pull-wire cl, and to the other, k, one end of an actuatin g-sprin g, a, which is secured to the bed-plate. The

The other end of the cam is pivoted at z to a connecting-arm, F, which is, in turn, pivoted at z to the crank c of the hammer G, the shank of which is journaled at f by passing it through a perforation through the bed-plate. A spring, y, en-
gages with a horn, h, at the crank end of the arm F, and serves to keep this arm pressed toward the cam E, the operation of the spring being limited by a stop, l, secured to the bedplate, and engaging with the crank 6, when a double action of the hammer is required. H indicates a key-stop, pivoted to the bed-plate at the side of the arm F.
When a single stroke only is desired, this key is turned toward the arm, thereby preventing the cam from moving the full length of the return stroke, and thus keeping the hammer from the bell on this return stroke.
0n the upper side of the bed-plate is secured an arm, K, to which is attached a bumper, L, of rubber or other elastic material, to receive the back stroke of the hammer, thereby instantly overcoming its momentum, and communicating force thereto in the direction of the bell.
This is of great importance in gongs of large size, where the hammer is of considerable weight. With this improvement, the momentum or strength of stroke of the hammer against the bell is directly proportioned to the rapidity of the pull upon the bellwire, which is not the case when the reacting device is not employed.
By means of the raised and flanged bedpivots g and z are arranged in line across the bed plate B.
