Description

WILLIAM M. PRESTON. I improvement in Alarm Bells. N() l25,32'8 Patented April2,1872.
Wzymveo 1 za'eizi'or' JILL f W 1 2; KM gw 9 f U Nrrnn STATES WILLIAM M. PRESTON, OF ROXBURY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JESSE A. SEGOY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ALARM-BELLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,328, dated April 2, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. PRESTON, of Roxbury, in the county of Delaware and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Alarm-Bells and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a door-bell, and also in the construction and arrangement of a device to be attached to the door, so that when desired the door-bell will answer the purpose of an alarm-bell, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front view of my entire doorbell, and Figs. 2 and 3 are detached views of parts thereof.
A represents an L-shaped bar or plate attached to the door-casing, and to the outer end of which the bell B is secured in any suitable manner. To the bar A is pivoted a plate, 0, which carries upon a projecting arm the hammer D, and is held in proper position by a spring, E. One end of this spring is attached to the bar A, and the other end to the plate 0, and is completely hid by the bell. A stud, a, on the plate 0 is, by a rod, 1), connected with a lever, G, in the. door-casing, and this lever is, by another rod, d, connected with another lever, H, projecting on the outside, so that by simply bearing down upon the outer end of the lever H the bell will be sounded. It will also be noticed that the hammer D will give two blows on the bell, one when the lever H is pressed down, and the other as soon as the pressure is taken off, by means of the spring E. V
This bell, or any other door-bell attached to the door-casing, may be used as an alarm-bell by means of the following simple device. To the inner side of the door near the edge is attached a plate, I, and to this is pivoted a bar, J, having upon its outer end an inclined or cam-shaped projection, e, which may be set so as to strike a similar projection, f, upon the hammer-plate C, and thus sound the bell both in opening and closing the door. Theinner end of the bar J is forked, and through the same to the plate I is pivoted a key, K, having on its under side a cam, 11, which operates on the prongs of said fork. By turning this key K in one direction the cam 71 will set the bar J so that the projections e and f will engage with each other, while by turning it in the other direction the projection 0 will be thrown away from the projection f, and thus the bell fail to be sounded in opening and closing the door.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The arrangement of the L-shaped bar A, bell B, pivoted plate 0, with hammerD and spring E, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the plate I, forked bar J with projection e, and keyK with cam i, all constructed and arranged as described,
to be used in connection with a projection on the hammer support of a door-bell, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WM. M. PRESTON. Witnesses:
J. A. SEooY, I. B. BENJAMIN.
