Ul'lED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD GORNELI'US ELLIOTT, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOB TO LANSTON MONO- TYPE MACHINE COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSLYLVANIA, A CORPORATION or VIRGINIA.
PRODUCTION OF JUSTIFIED LINES O1 SINGLE TYPE.
Application filed May 19,
This invention relates to the casting and composing of justified lines of single type bodies in automatic or record strip controlled type casting and composing machines.
The invention refers more particularly to casting and composing machines wherein are employed two separate or separately adjustable mould dimensioning devices, one of which determines the extent of opening of the mould for normal types and the other determines a variation in the adjustment of the mould for the production of justification types or spaces to produce justified lines of composition.
In these machines, the matrices from which the types are to be cast, are assembled or mounted in a die case in columns or rows according to their unit value and the normal mould adjusting device for dimensioning the mould in accordance with the set dimensions of Width of the various character types is in the form of a wedge which is positioned for each type, generally by the die case positioning mechanism, to bring the proper part of the wedge into position to act as astop for a mould dimensioning blade. The second or justification mould-dimensioning mechanism acts inconjunction with the normal wedge and determines the dimension of the mould for justification types or spaces. This mechanism comprises two independently adjustable wedges which are positioned, through signals in the record strip, before the casting of a line of composition commences, but are only brought into operation to act in conjunction with the normal wedge on the presentation by the record strip of a signal denoting a justification space. Concurrently with the presentation of such a signal, transfer devices, also in the form of wedges, are operated to transfer the control of the mould from the normal wedge to the control of thenormal Wedge, plusthe justification wedges.
The normal wedge is calculated in frac tions or units ofthe set value of a particular fount of type, whether the wedge is a straight taper or, as is generally the case, it has a stepped surface in addition to the taper; therefore, a particular normal wedge 1924. Serial No. 714,351.
is necessary for every different fount or set of type.
Hitherto, the justification Wedges have been calculated so that the different stages of advance have been in fractions of an inch. The two justification wedges have not the same taper; one of them is a finer taper than the other, so as to provide for minute adjustments.
With these two mould adjusting devices, a record strip composed for one fount of type or type of a particular set width, can only be employed to control the casting machine to produce j ustilied composition of a particular set and to a particular measure and could not be employed to produce justified lines of type in any other set or measure, since although the character types would be produced in proper widths, the mould being under control of the normal or set wedge, the justification would be inaccurate owing to the dimensions determined by the justification wedges.
It has been proposed, according to United States Letters Patent No. 1,449,489, dated March 27, 1923, to equip machines of the kind referred to with a single mould di mensioning mechanism competent to perform the functions of dimensioning the mould for both the production of normal bodies and the production of justification bodies with the further function of distributing or apportioning the line shortage equally among the justification bodies to produce exactly justified composition. This single mechanism is competent to produce justified composition of different set sizes under the controlof the same record strip.
According to the present invention, it is possible to employ one record strip to produce justified composition in different sets for which purpose this invention proposes to provide justification wedges based upon units of the type or set, so as to correspond with the normal wedge, so that it is only necessary when composition is required to be cast in a difierent set from that in which the record strip has been composed, to
change the normal or set wedge as hitherto,
and to employ a different pair of justification wedges, the tapers of which have been especially calculated for the set or fount employed. With such wedges, the composition will come out in a measure or length of line, different to, but proportional to the set or measure for which the record strip was originally composed.
The justification wedges are set or positioned by a mechanism controlled from signals in the record strip. The record strip.
wedges.
For the purpose of the present invention it is no longer necessary to employ on the record strip composing machine a different justification drum or indicator for every set size. A single drum is used for all set sizes. \Vith the present invention a record strip which has been composed in a set and measure, suitable say, for a book, can be employed to produce a justified composition suitable for a newspaper.
The invention will be described as embodied in the mould dimensioning system of a machine constructed in accordance with United States Letters PatentNo. 625,998, dated May 30, 1899.
Referring to the accompanying draw- 1ngs:
Fig. 1 shows the wedges in position for controlling the mould for normal type bodies.
Fig. 2 is a cross section through the wedges of Fig. 1 on the line of the mold blade.
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the wedges in position for controlling the mould when justification types are being cast and,
Fig. 4 is a cross section through the wedges of Fig. 3 on the line of the mold blade. 7
A is the normal wedgeB and G are the justification wedges, and D and E are the transfer wedges.
As will be seen in Figs. 3 and 4, the normal wedge A and the lower transfer Wedge E rest and slide upon the base plate F. The upper transfer wedge D rests upon the lower transfer wedge and the two justification wedges B and C slide upon a step F on the base plate or block F. This base plate is provided with two shoulders F and F which form stationary abutments for the wedges. When normal or character types are being cast, the wedges are in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The normal wedge A is set to the unit position for the type to be cast, and an abutment H connected with the mould dimensioning blade G bears against the outer edge of the normal wedge, while the lower transfer wedge E is interposed between the shoulder F on the stationary abutment and the inner side of the normal wedge.
In this position the upper transfer D is pushed back or withdrawn as shown in Fig. 1, so that it is inoperative and does not bear against either the normal wedge A or the justification wedges B, C.
The normal wedge A, as above stated, is positioned simultaneously with the die case for each separate type and the die case is controlled by a positioning mechanism through the signals in the record strip, but for all dimensioning purposes, the normal wedge, as it always moves in unison with the die-case, can be recorded as in one with the die case.
When the justification types or spaces are to be cast, the two justification wedges which have been set or positioned for determining the justification fraction to be added to each justification space type body in the particular line are brought into operation through the transfer wedges. To accomplish this, mechanism (which need not be described here) is operated to move the lower transfer wedge into a nonoperative position as shown in Fig.3, and to advance the upper transfer wedge so that it forms an abutment between the normal wedge A and the two justification wedges B and C which in turn, are pressed against the upper shoul der F of the stationary plate F. In this position, the control of the mould is through the normal wedge A, the upper transfer wedge D and the two justification wedges B and G.
In this latter position, the mould is dimensioned according to the value of the normal wedge, plus the increment denoted by the two j ustification wedges.
This arrangement does not differ from that used in the machine hitherto, except, that in accordance with the present invention, when the mould is controlled for justification types, it is no longer dimensioned by a normal wedge representing units of set and two justification wedges representing fractions of an inch, but by a normal wedge representing units of set and two justification wedges also representing units of set. By means of this invention, using justification wedges, which have their taper based on units of set, justified lines of single types can be produced, in a different set or measure to that for which the record strip has been originally composed; thus, a record strip composed to produce composition of column width or measure such as is employed in newspapers, can be employed, by simply changing the justification wedges, to produce justified composition of widths or measures for books and in various sets.
