Description

May 11 J. C. KELLEY HOLLOW TILE FOR BUILDING WALLS ETC Filed Nov Patented May 11, 1926.
UNITED STATES JOHN C. KELLEY, OF 'WEfi'I TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA.
HOLLOW TILE FOR BUILDING WALLS, ETC.
Application filed November My said invention relates to a hollow tile and it is an object of the same to provide a device of this character which in conjunction with other tiles shall afford in a wall or similar structure of hollow tile the appearance of a brick wall.
Referring to the accompanying c awings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is an end view of a form used in building a double-faced wall,
Figure 2, a perspective view tended to co-operate therewith,
Figure 3, a perspective view showing a fragment of such a wall or similar structure,
Figure e, an end view of a form designed for a wall with one outer face,
Figure 5, a perspective view of a wall structure embodying such form, and
Figure 6, a perspective view showing still another modified structure.
In the drawings reference character 10 indicates the hollow web or cross-bar of the form of tile shown in Figure 1, which is H-sha-ped in cross section with unbroken upper and lower walls 11 extending over the web and forming lateral wings with chambers 12. Between said lateral wings there are recesses adapted to receive a part or the whole of a tile 13 which has the shape and dimensions of a common brick. The end walls 1 1 of the main tile also are equal in width and length to the width and length of a common brick.
In building a wall or other structure with the assistance of the tile above described, the main tiles may be laid horizontally as indicated in Figures 3, 5, and 6, and the similar tiles are positioned in the horizontal recesses in the vall in such a manner as to break joints between the ends of the main tile, it being understood that space is al lowed for mortar or other binder at 15 between the respective tiles and the next main tile will be positioned endwise adjacent to those shown. It is to be understood, of course, that the use of tiles of this character is not limited to horizontal courses as the tiles may be set endwise or may be inclined according to the necessities of the case.
The tile shown in Figure 4c is similar to that of Figure 1 except that it has but one side recessed, as indicated at 16 and has a solid center web 21, a plain rear face of a tile in- 14, 1925. Serial No. 69,155.
22, and larger rear chambers 18, which chambers are defined by upper and lower walls 19, 20, a front wall 21, a rear wall 22 and a partition 23. This tile is intended for use for outside building walls and where, as shown in Figure 5, the main tile may be laid with its recess 16 facing outwardly, said recess being adapted to receive, as shown, the ends of a pair of the small hollow tiles 13 which are held in place by suitable mortar.
In the form of my invention shown in Figure 6 the construction is similar to that in Figures a and 5 except that additional compartments 28 are added so as to make the tile or greater width or depth in order to adapt the tile for the building of a thicker or heavier wall. Here also a recess is provided at the forward side of suitable dimensions to receive tiles 18 having the dimensions of an ordinary brick, to make a wall the face of which shall have the appea ance of a brick wall of common construction.
By this invention 1 am enabled to construct a wall having in all respects the appearance of a brick wall of customary construction very rapidly and at comparatively small expense because of the rapidity with which such a wall can be built due to the fact that the tile are of the size of several brick and each tile can be laid with approximately the same labor and in approximately the same time as a single brick, and to the further fact that the tile necessary in the construction oi such a wall are in themselves much less expensive than the number of brick required to build a wall of corre sponding dimensions. A further advantage resides in the fact that the component parts of the wall are securely tied together through the medium of the small tile interlocked in the recesses in the faces oi the larger tile. It will be understood, of course, that the faces ot the tiles are formed to resemble ordinary face brick of such appearance it is desired the proposed wall shall have. At present a roughened surface is popular in building such walls but it will be understood that the faces may be of any finish, or of varied colored material, it desired, tor the purpose stated.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in my invention without departing from the spirit thereof, and therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and de- Ill) scribed in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A hollow tile comprising a hollow body having integrally formed hollow arms extending outwardly therefrom in'spaced sub.- stantially parallel relation and forming a recess between said'arms slightly broader than the thickness of each of said arms, said hollow tile being adapted to be laid in end to end relation with other tile of like shape to form a wall with their recesses in alinement and with smaller tile insertedin said recesses and extending across the joints be tween the courses of larger tile.
A hollow tile comprising a hollow body having a pair of integrally formed arms extending outwardly fromsaid body, the arms of a pair being locate'din the same plane, but on oppositesides of said body,
a second pair of integrally formed arms spaced from said first mentioned pair of arms and forming therewith a recess on each side of said body between said first and se ond pair of arms, said recess being of a size to receive a regularly shaped smaller body in the form of a parallelopiped.
3. A wall composed of hollow tile laid in end to end relation with recesses in 11incment and with smaller tile inserted in the said recesses and'extending across the joint between the tile, said tile having the recesses comprising a body having arms extending outwardly therefrom and forming a recess between said arms closed on three sides and open atits outer side.
Inwitness whereof. I have'hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 22nd day of October A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty five.
