IMPROVEMENT IN GARTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,429, dated January 5, 1875; application tiled October 10, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I,LUc1Us F. MCDONALD, of Belfast, in the county of Waldo and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garters, of which the following is a specification:

Figure l is a plan view of one of my improved garters. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, taken through the line a: m, Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 represent the fastening-plates as cut out and before being bent into shape for attachment to the garter.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.

A is a short piece of elastic or rubber webbing, which is looped around a metallic loop or ring, B, and its ends are secured to each other and to the buckle O by a light sheetmetal plate, D, which is looped around the tongue-bar of the buckle O, and has a short slot formed in its middle part or loop for the passage of the tongue of the said buckle O. The ends of the plate D are placed above and below the ends of the elastic A, and upon the side edges of the lower or inner end are formed lips or claws d, which are bent down over its upper or outer end, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The end parts of the plate D are pressed down closely upon the ends of the elastic A, and

formed lips or lugs e, which are bent down upon the upper or outer end of the said plate. The ends of the plate E and the lips c are pressed down upon the end of the strap F, and are further secured in place by punching the plate E with a suitable punch, the burrs of the holes thus formed entering the strap F, l p and securing it firmly in place.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A garter composed essentially of the elastic A, loop B, buckle O, and plates D d E e, combined and arranged in the manner described,

for the purpose set forth.
