Our invention relates to improvements in staple binders, of the form shownin our application led May 9, 1921, Serial No. l-67,936, and the patents issued to us August 9, 1921, Nos. 1,387,268 and 1,387,269, and the object of our improvement 1s to 1ncorporate in a structure ofthe general form mentioned means for cooperating with the individual staple that is being driven by the plunger for guiding said staple so thatl it will be properly driven for cooperating with the anvil for binding materials that are operated upon in the usual manner.

The staple binder to which our invention applies may correspond inits general form to those shown and described in the application and patents mentioned above or to some others that opera-te on a staple strip of the form shown inFig. 7 for lsevering the individual staples from said stripV and' driving and clenching the same, so that'a brief description of the general structure will su'flice'.
Such general structure may comprise a base 10 having at the front end the anvil 11 for clenching the staples 12 in cooperation with the plunger 13 after they vhave been severed fromrthe staple strip andare forced downwardly by the continued movement of the plunger, said staple strip being composed of a plurality of individual staples 12 conneet-edv in series.
At the rear end of the base 10 is a pair of opstanding ears 14, positioned in spaced relation, that support the pivotal pin 15. l
The base 10 serves as the lined member, and' a moving member, designatedgenerally by the character 16,- is operatively connected thereto by the pivotal pin 15.
y A pair of ways 17 -at the froiit part 'of the moving member 16l positioned inspaced relation, engage with the side edge portions of the plunger 13 and serve to guide the plunger in its upward and downward movement.
The filler piece 18 that extends along the bottom of the moving member 16, opposed to the base 10, is positioned between the two .side plates 19 of the frame or casing",y has its upper portion20 reduced in width so as to serve as the guide for the staple strip; supports by its front end the [die 21; supports by the lowerportion 22 suitable, dowel vpins 23 for positioning the side plates.' 19 and has the rear end portion'eXtended between the ears 14E and pivotally supported by the pin 15'.
The said lower portion 22 also has holes for the two holding screwsv that serve t-o hold the side plates 19 in place, comprising the screw 24 at the rea-r and the" screw 25' at thefront. Y
The front screw 25`- serves also as' the means for holdingthe die 21 in place, said piece.
The upper part of the casing for the mov# ing member 16 is formed by the side plates 19 which have their body portions positioned in spaced relation to provide a'v housing for the staple moving or feeding mechanism that cooperates with the plunger 13,. The form ofthe said upper part of the casing is generally triangular, with aws'loping or inclined rear' and upper `wall 26, and the closure for said rear kand upper portion is priovid'edby means'of inwardly turned, opposed flanges 27 on Vsaid plates 19.
At the upper,y front part of the casing, being at the upper end of the ways 17, is a seat 28 for the spring 29 that cooperates with the knob 30 at the upper end of the' plunger 13 so as to tend to hold said plunger in the uppermost position.
The staple strip feeding4 mechanism is similar to that shown and described in the specification referred to above, beingV actuated by a'lug 31 on the plunger 1.3, and comprises a feeding pawl 32 and a holding pawl 33.
The feeding pawl 32 is supported by a pivotally supported dog 34, the latter having a lug 35 that cooperates with the nose 31 on the plunger 13, and a spring 36 serves to position the said feeding pawl 32 relatively to the dog 34.
A spring 37 serves to position the holding pawl 33. e
The individual staples 12 are of U-shape, as is usual, and they are connected together by means of connecting necks 38 that serve to inter-connect the yoke portions 39 of the adjacent individual staples 12, whereby there is provided a backbone structure 40 that extends continuously from end to end of the staple strip, said strip as a whole being designated by the character 41.
The yoke portions 39 extend transversely across the backbone 40, the necks 38 connecting the middle portions of said yoke portions or yokes 39. Said backbone 40 rests upon and travels along the upper face of the reduced, upper portion 2()y of the filler piece 18.
The legs 42 of the individual staples 12 hang downwardly from the ends of the yokes 39 and travel in the spaces 43 at the sides of the reduced, upper portion 20, which spaces 43 are closed on the outer sides by the side plates,1.9.
Thus said reduced, upper portion 2O of the filler piece 18 serves as the guide and support for the staple strip 41 and is the part that has the cutting edge at the front end for cooperating with the cutting edge on the plunger 13. The cutting edge 44 on the filler piece 18 may be integral with said filler piece 18 or may be provided as a removable and adjustable die 21, as shown.
The cutting edge 45 on the plunger 13 operates to sever the neck 38 as the plunger is lowered and the continued movement of the plunger 13 serves to drive the severed staple 12 along the channel 46 between the filler piece 18 and the opposed front wall portions 47 of the ways 17. Previous to being severed the end staple 12 is held overhanging the filler piece 18, at the upper portion of the channel 46, and with the legs 42 held against the front wall portions 47, the projecting end portion of the neck 38 that was left by the previous cut being housed within the space 48 between the opposed edges of said front wall portions 47 of the ways 17.
The means for guiding the staple will now be considered.
As described above, the front wall portions 47 of the ways 17 are opposed to the front edge portions of the legs 42 of the end staple 12 and they are thus adapted to operate as guides for the front side of the staple.
A guide device for the rear side of the staple 12 is provided in the form of a movable, plate-like piece or slide 49 that is carried by the plunger 13 and has a forked lower end portion that is adapted to straddle the upper, reduced portion 2O of the filler piece 18 and the neck 38 resting thereon, these parts being positioned within the space 50 between the two opposed side arm portions 51 of said forked lower end..
The opposed inner edge portions 52 of said sidev arm portions 51 are adapted to enter within the spaces 53 between the legs 42 of the last or end staple 12 and the next adjacent staple, and thus serve as the guide proper for the rear side of the end staple 12 under operating conditions.
The slide 49 is slidably mounted on the rear face of the body portion of the plunger 13 and at the sides lits between the side plates 19; has a slot 54 for the fin 55 that is mounted on said rear face and carries the lug or nose 31; has at each side a laterally extending guide portion in the form of a Wing 56 that cooperates with a slot 57 in the side plate 19; has further extensions of saId wings 56 that serve as handles 58 for manipulating the slide 49; and, also, is provided on the rear face with a pair of pawls 59 and a spring 60 therefor.
The edges of the handles 58 may be serrated, as shown, or otherwise roughened. Also, as shown, said handles 58 and the guide wings 56 may bein the form of lateral extensions of the arms 51 that compose the forked lower end portion of the slide 49.
The pawls 59 are swinging, pivotally supported members that have the upper end portions 61 opposed to the in 55 and held in contact therewith by the spring 60 and are adapted to engage with the notches 62 in the side faces of Said fin 55 for positively locking the slid-e 49 to the plunger 13, particularly for downward movement of the parts.
The pawls 59 are tripped so as to disconnect the slide from the plunger by having the lower end portions 63 thereof abut with the inwardly projecting lugs 64 that are provided on the side plates 19.
The slide 49 normally projects below t-he plunger 13, with the latter in its uppermost position and is, therefore, operative to be entered into the guiding position for cooperating with the staple upon the application of the driving force on the plunger. Before the plunger completes its downward movement the slide is stopped and the pawls released from the locking positions, whereby the slide is shifted along the plunger. The amount of .such shifting is such as will ensure clearance for the staple strip as it is fed along the filler piece 18 during the return movement of the plunger.
During .suchi return movement of the plunger 13 the slide 49 is carried with it until the upward movement of the slide is stopped and the plunger continues for the completion of its movement.

We claim as our invention l. A staple binder having a supporting bar for supporting a staple strip that is composed of individual staples connected together, said bar having a cutting edge at one end, means for feeding said strip along said bar .so that said strip will project beyond said cutting edge, means to limit such projection of the strip to correspond to a single staple and operative also to serve as a guide for the opposed edge portion of said single staple, a plunger having a cutting edge to cooperate with the cutting edge of the bar and operative to be driven so as to sever said single staple and drive the same, a slide having a forked lower end for cooperating as a guide with the opposite edge portion of said single staple and having the body portion opposed to said plunger, a spring actuated pawl mounted on said slide, said plunger having a notch for engaging with said pawl, and a tripping lug for disengaging said pawl from said notch.
2. A staple binder as described in claim 1, a casing generally enclosing the operating mechanism and having slots in the side walls, and said slide having handle extensions projecting laterally through said slots.
3. ln a staple binder, a casing, a plunger for operating in said casing, mechanism operated by said plunger for feeding a staple strip and for severing and driving individual staples, said casing having guide means for one side of said individual staples, an auxiliary guide device for the other side of said individual staples, said device being supported so as to have a limited longitudinal movement generally in parallelism with the direction of movement of the plunger and having means for cooperating with said plunger for effecting such movement, said casing having slots in the side Walls, and said device being projected outwardly through said slots so as to be accessible for hand manipulation.
4. A stapling machine including a frame having a cutter bar over which a strip of staples is adapted to be fed, a plunger guided by said frame and moving at right angles to said cutter bar to cooperate therewith to sever the staples, means for feeding the staple strip over said cutter bar to project the end of the strip beyond the bar, a slide movable in said frame parallel with said plunger and adapted to be inserted behind the prongs of the projecting staple of said strip, said slide being operated by said plunger and having a portion projecting from the frame to permit hand manipulation of said slide independent of the plunger operation there of.
5. A stapling machine including a frame having a cutter bar over which a strip of staples is adapted to be fed, a plunger guided by said frame and moving at right angles to said cutter bar to cooperate therewith to sever the staples, means for feeding the staple strip over said cutter bar to project the end of the strip beyond the bar, a slide movable in said frame parallel with said plunger and adapted to be inserted behind the prongs of the projecting staple of said strip, said slide being operated by said plunger, said frame having a guideway for the slide, and a slot through said frame, said slide having a projection extending through the slot in said frame whereby the slide may be manipulated independently of its operation by said plunger.
