J. HECK WOVEN ELASTIG RIBBON Filed March 27. 1925 A I /1 4 ,mmwwmm Patent-ed May 4, 19216.-
UNITED STATES PATENT .oi-Fica JOHN xnc'x, or cnrcneo, ILLINOIS, AssIGNon 'ro A. 'STEIN a OOIIPANLOF CHICAGO.
ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION F ILLINOIS.
WOVEN nLAs'rIc RIBBON.
Application nieu laren 27,1925. 'serial No. 18,790.
L To all twhom may concern.'
y the following is a specification.
' The invention relates to elastic ribbon or fabric bands such as are commonly employed for hose supporters, arm bands, and the like,
and seeks to provide an improved lconstruction comprising a strip of elastic webbing covered on one or both sides with an ornamental shirred ribbon or ribbons, one of which is interwoven with the edges of the webbing, and also, in the preferred embodiment of the invention, extends over its edge.v The invention is illustrated in the preferred form in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the ap.A
pended claims. Figure 1 is a View of one face of the improved ribbon, and'which face will usually constitute its back. Figure 2 is a cross section on'the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Figure- 3 is a detail section illustrating the manner of connecting the edges of the elastic webbing and the shirred ribbon forming its back or lining.
The improved elastic ribbon orp'fabric band comprises an intermediate fiat strip a .of elastic webbing formed, as usual, fof stout cotton threads and having longitudinal or vwarp threads 1 of rubber extending therethrough. In the referred form, the elastic webbing isprovi ed with a facing b and a formed of shirred ribbons of considerably lighter weight than the webbing and are usually made of silk. The shirred ribbon facing b is connected to the webbing and to the back or lining by longitudinal rows of stitches 2 extending through the webbing and backing adjacent their edges, with the facing extending beyondsuch The shirred ribbon backing or lining c extends over and covers the edges of the webbing a and is interwoven' therewith, preferably as more clearly indicated in Fig. 3. The elastic webbing, as shown, comprises `in addition to the rubber warp threads 1, intermediate liber warp theadsva and a fiber weft thread 5, the threads 4 and 5 being quite stout and usually formed of cotton. The shirred ribbon c forming the backing edges' to form ornamental frills 3.
or lining for the webbing is usually formed' of silk and comprises warp threads 6 and a weft' or filling thread 7. As shown; the edge portions of the bac-king ribbon extend over and cover the edges of the webbing with the loops 8 between the picks of its-weft encircling the edges of the webbing and extending through the same at points adjacent its edges. In Fig. 3, one such loop is indicated in full lines and the next adj acentl loop in dotted lines. With this arrangement, it is obvious that the overlapping edge portions a of the backing or lining ribbon c will only have one half the number of picks as the main portion thereof.
n The elastic webbing and the ribbon backing or lining must, of course, be woven at the same time and their edges interwoven, as described, in a suitable double shuttle loom, the 4backing being woven fuller than the webbing so that the backing will be shirred by the contraction of the webbing.` The improvement provides an elastic band orstrip of webbing, one face and the edges4 of which are covered with an ornamental shirred ribbon which are interwoven at their selvage edges. WVhen, as preferred, the webbing is also provided with a shirred ribthe latter is secured in place preferably extend through the webbing and the backing along the lines between the main body of the backing and its overlapping edge por tions c Obviously, changes may be made in the details set forth without departure from the appended claims. l
I claim as .my invention a 1.An elastic ribbon comprising` an elastic webbing, a shirred lining interwoven at its edges with the edges of said webbing, and a shirred lfacing stitched to said webbing and said lining and extending beyond the edges thereof. A
2.- An elastic ribbon comprising an elastic webbing, a non-elastic shirred linin having its edges extending over and having its wefts looped around the edges of said webbilig, and a shirred facing stitched to said webbing and said lining.
3. An elastic ribbon comprising an elastic webbing, a non-elastic shirred lining having its edges extending over and interwoven with the edges of said webbing, and a nonelastic shirred facing stitched to the webbing iio and lining and extending beyond the edges thereof.
4. A fabric band comprising an elastic webbing and a non-elastic shirred ribbon` the edges of the webbing, the ribbon having the loops between the picks of its weft thread extending through its said edge portions and through the webbing at points adjacent its edges and the said overlapping edge portions of the ribbon having one half the number of picks of weft as the main portion thereof.
7. A fabric band comprising an elastic webbing, a shirred ribbon on one side of the webbing, the webbing and the ribbon having interwoven selvage edges in which the wefts of the ribbon are looped about the-warp threads of the webbing, and a shirred ribbon on the other side of the webbing.
8. An elastic ribbon comprising an elastic webbing, and an inelastic lining having its threads looped around and covering the edges of the webbing.
9. An elastic ribbon comprising an elastic webbing' having elastic and inelastic warp threads and vinelastic weft threads, and a shirred lining having inelastic weft threads extending around and interwoven with the elastic warp threads and inelastic weft threads of said webbing adjacent the edges thereof. f
10. An elastic ribbon comprisingan elastic webbing having elastic and inelastic warp threads andinelastic weft threads, and a lining` inward shirred inelastic lining having its vinelastic weft threads at its edges'extending over and interwoven with the .edges to cover the same. s 12. An elastic ribbon comprising an elastic webbing, a shirred lining having its lweft threads at its edges extending over and interwoven with the edges of said webbino', afndfa shirred facin stitched to the webbing and y of said interwoven parts. 13. An elastic ribbon comprising an elastic webbing including elastic warp threads and inelastic warp and weft threads, and a shirred lining have both its warp and weft threads at its edges extending over the edges of said webbing of the elastic webbing and its weft threadsinterwoven with the erastic warp threads and inelastic weft threads` of the webbing at the edges of said webbing.
l4.-A fabric band comprising'an elastic -Y webbing including inelastic weft threads and weft loops at its edges and a shirred ribbon, the webbing and the ribbon havino' interwoven selvage edges with the inelastic wefts of the elastic webbing looped ,around the warps and the weft loops ofthe elastic webbing at the edges of the elastic webbing.
15. A woven elastic ribboicomprisingan inelastic webbing including inelastic warps and wefts and elastic warps located at intermediate vpoints and at its edges, the wefts having loops extending around the elasticl warps at the edges, and an inelastic webbing or backing interwoven at its edges with the edges of the elastic webbing, vthe wefts of the' inelastic webbing or backing being looped around the weft loops andthe elastic warps of the elastic webbing at the edges of the latter and having its inelastic warps also positioned therearound. y JOHN HECK.`
