suitably located retaining lugs or projections 19, adapted to be brought into registration with correspondingly locatedreceiving depressions in the inner flat face of the other anvil'member 6, as will be evident from an inspection of Figure 1 of the drawings. From Figures 3 and i it will be seen. that one of the anvil-members as 5, is formed with an inwardly projecting portion 21, the end-portion of which is fitted in a recess 22in the member 6, all arranged to provide a suitablestrike-plate, against which the enlargement or head 16 of the pin or stud 15 is brought into forcible contact for exploding or firing purposes, in the manner to be presently described.
In lieu of this form of strike-plate, the
' anvil- members 5 and 6 may be respectively provided with inwardly extending abutting portions, as 23 and 2 to provide a strikeplate of the construction illustrated in Figures 6and 7 of the drawings.
This latter construction is somewhat preferable over the construction illustrated in Figures Into 5 inclusive, since in the construction of anvil represented in Figures 6 and 7,'both anvil-members are alike, so that both members can be cast from the same pattern; or may be struck up fromthe same die, and may be used either right or left, thus facilitating the assembling operation of the parts, as will be clearly evident.
In using the device for firing or exploding a percussion or paper-cap, the latter is inserted into an open portion of either of the members 5 and 6, and placed directly upon the enlargement or head 16 of the pin or stud 15. The stick or rod 2 being held by means of its knob 3 in a raised position is then moved with force in a downward direction, bringing the projecting end of the pin or stud 15 with force upon theground, or against a stone, or the like. The result is that at the time of contact, the pin or stud 15 moves upwardly between the channelled portions 10 and 12 of the members 5 and 6, causing the percussion or paper-cap supported upon the head 16 to be brought into exploding contact with the strike-plate of either of the devices shown and described, so that the cap will be fired with a loud report.
Of course, I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, andas defined in the clauses of the claim which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim p 1.
