By such means the plate e1 is held at its respective longitudinal edges against the Vface of the front wall of the duct by pressure that may be adjusted by the opera-- tion of the respective nuts or heads Communication between the cylinders d, Z1 of each pair is permitted through a hole or holes d4 provided in such position vas to be closed by the plunger c in its forward position. Y
. In the operation of each pump 'fthe hole or slot cl3 in the cylinder Z1 of each pair communicating lwith the duct a is uncovered by the( plunger c1 konV its reachingfits rear position, the-hole orY holes Z4 having` been previously closed by the forward movement of the plunger c, and ink flows into the cylinder Z1 fromthe duct a by reason of the partial vacuum vin the cylinder d1. j
VOn the plunger c1 again movingl forward, the hole or slot cl3 isV closed by the plunger c1, and the ink is forced by the latter into lthel other cylinder Z of the pair, through the holel or holesicZL communicating therewith,
when the other plunger c has moved rearwardly sufficiently far "to uncover the hole or holes d4.' The ink may be subjected momentarily to Y a certain amount v'of comy pression in thecylinder Z1 before the hole or holes Z4 are opened by the plunger c but owing to possible leakage due to the ab-v sence of glands orpackingV rings this compression is in practice unobjectionable. Owing to the momentary compression to which the ink is subjected by the plunger c1 immediately prior to .the opening of the holefor holes Zt'by the plunger c, the ink is vejected through the holes (Z4 -into the cylinder (l `witlrgreat impetus and although thereis'a tendency for the ink to be withdrawn again on the return stroke of the plunger c1, a certain yamount of ink will be trapped in the cylinder CZ by the plunger c which on its continued forward stroke will thus feed a quantity of ink, corresponding to the amount trapped in the cylinder d, to the outlet e. Y
whe plungers c, 'c1 may be operate'd'by ece ccntrics g, g1 respectively, or their equivalent, mountedfin such ,imann'er as to cause their alternate reciprocation. The Yeccentries g, g1 for operating the pumps for the outside pages at one end maybe mounted upon a shaft L disposed longitudinally in echamber a2 advantageously provided adjacent the duct a and extending short of the position at ywhich the ecc-entries for operating the pumps for the centre pages are disposed, andthe eccentrics for operating the pumps forthe 'outside pages. at the other Yend may be mountedupon a shaft disposed similarly-to the shaft 7L.V r Y The eccentries for operating the-pumps for the centre pages mayfbesimil'arly connected to their respective `plungers andl are advantageously mounted upon a shaft'ph1 disposed parallel withand behind the shafts It.V ,The shaft h1 maybe provided in two parts, that is, it maybe divided at a middle position whereby the pumps for one half of the centre pages maybe driven from one on separate shafts and by stopping any of s y the shafts the supply of ink tothe corresponding pages may be cut off. Y
ings such as la and the eccentrics may be slotted, interrupted or otherwise provided to facilitate assembling and dismantling. Y
Each slidably mounted block'rl2 'may beV adjusted to or away ,from the distributing cylinder by means `ofa pin z' mounted eccentrically upon the lower end of a vertically`dis-V posed shaft l which is rotatably mounted with in the longitudinal front wall a3 of the-duct. Anarm or lever 2 may be-provided upon the upper end of the shaft l and may be adapted'to be operated from a position adjacent either end of the duct for the .partial rotation of theV shaft il. The pin @"engageswithin a transversely disposed slot or recess d5 in the upper face ofthe block d2, so that thus on rotation of the pin z' the block (Z2. may be moved axially towards or away from the shafts 7L, 71,1. v Y
On adjustment of the block Z2V away from the distributing cylinder, the hole or holes d* .are opened by the plunger c'fora shorter period of time whereby aV greater quantity 16o The shafts 7L, h1 may be mounted'in beardoes not return Jfar enough to openlthe hole or holes Z4 and thus the feedof ink to the outlet e is 'out off.
By suoli means it WillY be understoodv that the Capacity or delivery of each pumpmay be readily varied While in operation.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the details oifoonstruction hereinbefore described, vfor example the plungers of each pump maybe disposed supplied and a plurality of valveless plungerv pumps each comprisingv two plungers and two Cylinders, one' plunger operating to vWithdraw ink from thev duct and to force it into the cylinder of the otherplunger' which latter plunger ejeetstlie ink on to the tially `als hereinbefore 'de'seribed` 2.
