TOY VEHICLE.
Application filed December 1, 1924. Serial No. 753,367.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES C. BLACK- .wronn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lmprovementsin Toy Ve hicles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
' My invention relates to toys and in particular to a toy vehicle.
It is the object of my invention to provide a toy'vehicle which will have a collapsing telescoping handle which may be nested within the body of the vehicle itself.
It is a further object to provide a straddle vehicle of this type.
It is a further object to provide such a vehicle which has a fore and aft brace in which the handle may be nested after being telescoped.
It is an additional object of my invention to so arrange the collapsing of the'handle and its telescoping within the vehicle that the forward end of the handle may act as a bumper.
It is an additional object of my invention to provide a detachable structure for the vehicle to permit of the vehicle being shipped in readily knock-down and readily assembled condition.
It is another object of my invention to provide means of lifting the vehicle either with or without the child on it so that the toy cart may be lifted over obstacles such as curbstones and the like. By having the collapsing handle the vehicle may be pulled by an adult or another child or the handle may be stored out of the way without interfering with the independent operation of the vehicle by the child itself and without danger of the handle be'cominglost.
It is a further object of my" invention to provide such a vehicle with independent swivel wheels at the forward end thereof of relatively large size to take the place of small casters now common with this general type of vehicle, so that the toy cart may readily move over obstacles such as door sills, edges of ugs' ndth like which are now an obstruction to the operation ofthe toy'by a child riding'on it.

Referring to the drawings in detail,-1 is a seat narrowed at the middle portion thereof into an intermediate leg portion 2' and expandedat the forward end to form a broad bearing plate 3. The restricted portion between the parts marked 1 and 3 permits of the child to workhis legs to propel the vehicle.
At the rear end of this seat is mounted aback piece 4 having a cutaway portion 5 through which the hand of the person lifting the toy may be inserted. The other hand of the person can grasp the transverse handle 6 which is mounted on theupright 7. The upright 7 is in turn attached to the forward plate 3.
The back of this upright or the back of the handle 6 is provided with an eye 8 through which is passed a U-shaped rod 9. This rod passes backwardly on either side of the seat 1 and is attached by bolts 10 to the upright back 41. Rubber tubes 11 are threaded on the rod on either side thereof to prevent injury to the occupant of the vehicle. The platform or seat is provided at its rear end with a transverse wooden bolster 12 and a similar transverse bolster 13 in front. Between these bolsters is a brace having a restricted middle portion 14 and deeper end portions. 15 to formbroad bearing surfaces for attachment to the bo1sters'12 and 13.
The rear bolster 12carries an which in. turn has mounted thereon wheels such as disk wheels 17 carrying rubber tires The forward bolster 13 carries vertical swivel spindles orjackaxles 19 whichciarry axle 16;
on their lower ends bifurcated arms 20 between which turns the forward wheel 21 having a tire 22 on an axle 23.
Thus the wheel can turn about the axis of the spindle 19 and rotate about the axle 28.
It will be noted that the forward wheel 21 is about two-thirds the size of the rear wheel 17 and is very much larger than the customary wheel employed on this general type of vehicle.
The super structure consisting of the back d and the forward handle supporting member 7 is detachable in this vehicle. This detachable feature is provided by having Wood screws 24 threaded into the wooden uprights with smooth shanks 25 adapted to pass through. the seat and project below the seat. These projecting ends have machined threads 26 thereon for receiving wing nuts 27. Between these wing nuts and the bottom of the seat is a plate 28 which is the turnedover end of a U-shaped strap 29 which passes around the brace 15 and is attached thereto by a wood screw 30. This turned-over end 28 of the strap serves to tie the brace and seat as well as the super structure together. It acts as a washer between the wing nut 27 and the seat 1 or the forward plate 3 of the seat.
It is thus possible by taking off the wing nuts to detach the super structure which greatly facilitates packing and transportation of the vehicle.
This fore and aft brace 14 with enlarged ends 15 has a groove cut on the interior thereof which is U-shaped, such groove being designated 31. Within this groove is nested the telescoping handle which consists of a tubular member 82 and a telescoping rod A head 34% is provided on the rod for engaging with a throat 35 on the outer end of the tube to prevent the rod being completely drawn out of the tube. Any desired form of connection may be used at this point.
The inner or rear end of the tube is provi ded with an enlarged cap 36 to prevent the tube from making its exit from the vehicle.- This exit is prevented by the plate S7, at ached by screws 38 to the forward bolster 13. This plate is provided with a transverse slot 39 and an enlarged center portion in the slot l0 through which the rod passes. The extended slot 39 receives the V-shaped portion of the handle 41 to keep the handle in horizontal position. It will be observed hat the handle has a rubber tube over the forward end thereof, such as 42 which serves both as a bumper and as a resilient handiold to prevent the wire handle from cutting the hand of the person pulling the vehicle.

joint so that the handle may beheld at varying elevations. The end 36 of this tube abuts against the rear bolster 12 when the handle is telescoped and nested.
The axle 16 may be held to the bottom of the bolster in any desired fashion such as by U-shaped clips 43.
t will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications and changes as may be necessary to adapt it to varying conditions.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In a toy straddle vehicle, the combination of a handle telescopingwitl'iin said vehicle, said handle being connected by a universal joint to the vehicle when in extended position, so that it may be held at different elevations.
2. I11 a toy straddle vehicle, the combination of a handle telescoping within said vehicle, said telescoping handle adapted to ie nested within said vehicle when telescoped, said handle acting as a bumper when in the telescoped position.
3. In a toy straddle vehicle, the combination of a handle telescoping within said vehicle, said telescoping handle adapted to be nested within said vehicle when telescoped, said handle acting as a bumper when in the telescoped position, and a rubber member on the end of said handle.
4. In a toy vehicle having a seat platform and rear wheels, a back, a forward handle and swivel front wheels relatively large, approximately one-third less in size than the rear wheels, and a brace connecting the fore and aft portions of said vehicle cut away to receive a telescoping handle, and a telescoping handle.
5. In a toy vehicle having a seat platform and rear wheels, a back, a forward handle and swivel front wheels relatively large, approximately one-third less in size than the rear wheels, and a brace connecting the fore and aft portions of said vehicle cut away to receive a telescoping handle, a telescoping handle and means to keep said telescoping handle in a horizontal position when it is in its telescoped position.
6. In a toy vehicle having a seat platform and rear wheels, a back, a forward handleand swivel front wheels relatively large, approximately one-third less in size than the rear wheels, and a brace connecting the fore and aft portions of said vehicle cut away to receive a telescoping handle in a horizontal position when it is in its telescopecl position, and a rubber bumper memher on the outer end of said handle.
7. In a toy vehicle having a seat and wheels, the combination therewith of a telescoping handle adapted to be nested below h g ral level of the vehicle and s9 mounted with a universal joint connection with the vehicle that it may be held at different elevations when in extended position.
8; In a toy vehicle having a seat and wheels, forward and rear bolsters, a brace for said bolsters, the combination thereith of a telescoping handle adapted to be nested therein, said nesting being effected within the brace joining the forward and rear bolsters under the seat of the vehicle, and means on said forward bolster to prevent the handle from being completely detached from the vehicle.
9. In a toy vehicle having a seat and wheels, forward and rear bolsters, -a brace for said bolsters, the combination therewith of a telescoping handle adapted to be nested therein, said nesting being effected within the brace joining the forward and rear bolsters under'the seat of the vehicle, means on said forward bolster to prevent the handle from being completely detached from the vehicle, and the rear end of the telescoping handle being prevented from passing out of the rear of the vehicle by the rear bolster.
10. In a toy vehicle having a seat and wheels, forward and rear bolsters, a brace for said bolsters, the combination t-here with of a telescoping handle adapted to be nested therein, said nesting being effected within the brace adjoining the forward and rear bolsters under the seat of the vehicle, means on said forward bolster to prevent the handle from being completely detached from the vehicle, and the rear end of the telescoping handle being prevented from passing out of the rear of the vehicle by the rear bolster, and means when the handle is telescoped to prevent it from assuming any position but the horizontal.
11. In a toy vehicle having a seat platform, fore and aft bolsters, axles and wheels carried by said bolsters, straps carried by a brace between said bolsters, and a super structure such as a back adapted to be carried on the seat platform having depending members carried thereby passing through the platform and through said straps, and means for mounting on the free ends of said depending members for clamping the super structure, platform, straps and fore and aft bolsters to one another.
12. In a toy vehicle having a seat platstructure such as a back adapted to be carriedon the seat platform having depending members carried thereby passing through the platform and through said straps, and means for mounting on the free ends of said depending membersfor clamping the superstructure, platform, straps and fore and aft bolsters to one another, said brace having a cutaway groove on the upper side thereof for receiving a telescoping handle passing through the forward bolster, means to prevent said handle from becoming detached from the vehicle, said handle consisting of a tubular member and a rod therein, said rod having a handle on the forward end thereof and means to prevent said tubular member and rod from becoming detached from one another.
13. In a toy vehicle having a seat platform, fore and aft bolsters, axles and wheels carried by said bolsters, straps carried by a brace between said bolsters, and a super structure such as a back adapted to be carried on the seat platform having depending members carried thereby passing through the platform and through said straps, and means formounting on the free ends of said depending members for clamping the super structure, platform, straps and fore and aft bolsters to one another, said brace having a cutaway groove on the upper side thereof for receiving a telescoping handle passing through the forward bolster, means to prevent said handle from becoming detached from the vehicle, said handle consisting of a tubular member and a rod therein, said rod having a handle on the forward end thereof and means to prevent said tubular member and rod from becoming detached from one another, and a rubber member mounted on the outer end of said handle.
