TofaZZ abhomitm'dy concern:
acitizen ofthe" United States, residing at WVenhamyin thecounty 'of-EsseX and .State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stitch-Form; mg Mechanism forSewmgMachmes; and
do hereby declare the following to be a.
full, clear, and exact description of the invention', such as will'enable others skilled'in the "art to which it appertains to. make; and
use the same.
i The invention relates to buttonholc sews ing machmes and more partlcularlyto under "needle and zlOOPBI' mechanism for such machines. V v
The object of the invention is to provide an under needle and looper mechanism I which is simple-and durable in construction and in which the motions are easy and accu: rately timed'to secure a uniformly reliable action when operated at high speed. "To
this end the invention comprises. the featuresof construction and combinatione-of parts hereinafter described to in the claims Inthe' drawings Fig. 1 is aifrontjeleva tron of -the turret of'a'butt'onhole sewmgma chine provided with the-preferred form of the invention, FigJ -Q is an elevationlooking from the right in Fig. 1,-Fig. 3 is ,a'plan view of Fig; Qiand. Fig. 4 is a sectional view online 4-,"Fig. 2.* 7 V V The stltch forming inechanlsm of that class of machines to which the invention relates is usually mounted to rotate during the sewing of the buttonhole and comprises an and an 'under'needle and looper mounted 1n a rotary turret. In the construction shown the under needle 2 and the looper.
4: are mounted in a turret 6 which also carries the throat plate 8 through which the needles pass. The turret is rotated whilev sewing about the eye or while sewing about .the eye and about the bar end of the buttonhole through a horizontal shaft 10 connected with the turret by beveled gears 12.
The under needle 2 is a straight eye pointed needle and is secured in the upper end of a needle bar 14 which is mounted to reciprocate in bearings on the turret. The path of movement of the needle is at an inf clination to the path of movement of the 0 upper needle 16 and is such that theunder' and referred needle passes up and presents. a loop of underathrcadin posi-' tion for the passage downf therethr'o-ugh 'of the upper needle. The needle-bar is reciprocated by a lever-18 secured" to: a rock shaft a link 26 connecting the' leverEi'with the end of al'ever 28 which is mounted onthe:
frame of the machine; thelinkbeingilocated substantially inathe' axis of the turret lThe looper lfWlliCll takes aploop of threadtrom V the upper needle and carries it iiitopositionover the under needle isf'secured in-the up per end of a vertical looper lever 30.,
mounted to swing about a 'pivot' 32 which projects horizontally and'transver'sely from the hub of a looper carrierleverfi l. The
loop-er lever :is swungjon "its-pivot tofta'ke the loop from the upper L needle through a link 36 which-connects the lower end of the ;'lever with the needle actuating 'le ve'r 18;: The linlr36is made intwo'partscom nected byfaft'urnbuckle 38 by which. the length of the "link maybe adjusted'to bring the looper intoproper relationtothe parts with which it-cooperates. The looper car? rier lever 34 is rocked tomovethelooper lat-' erallyby a three-cornered eccentric or cam 40secured to a rockshaftx421andarranged V 7' between the arms- 44 at'th elower' end 'off the lever. The shaft 42 is actuated from the rock shaft 20 through a link46. which connects an arm 48 secured to the rockshaft to I anarm 50 secured to the shaft 42;
This under needle and looper mechanism is simple and durable in construction and the motions are easy and accurately timed so that the mechanism is well adapted for eflicient and uniformly reliable operation at high speeds. The straight needle bar and a needle reciprocating at an inclination to the upper needle path contribute to the simplic- .ity and compactness of the mechanism and also render-the mechanism particularly well adapted for sewing fly=barbutto1iholes or other classes of work in which the under needle must perforate the stock jat certain points in the sewing of the seam and is therefore subjected to strains which curved under needles are ill adapted'to withstand;
While. it is preferred to employthe specific construction and arrangement ofparts shown and described it will be understood that this construction and arrangement is not essential to the broader features of the invention and may be varied or modified as found desirable or bestv suited to the constru'cti'on and mode of operation of themachine to which the invention is to be applied. What is claimed is: r 1. A stitch formingmechanism having, in combination, a looper, a vertical looper lever on the upper end of which the loo-per is carried, a'carrieri leverhavinga transverse pivor on which the lopper lever is mounted,dan actuator, a link connecting the actuator with the looper lever to swing the lever on its pivot a cam operated from the actuator for rocking the carrier lever to move the -looper lever; transversely of its swinging movement. '7 V 7 2. Ass-titeh forming mechanism hav ng, 1n
combination, alooper, vertical looper lever on the upperfend of which the looper is. carried, a carrier lever having a transverse pivot on which the looper lever is mounted, an actuator, a link connecting the actuatorwi-th the. looper' lever to swing the lever on its pivot,- a rock shaft provided with a cam connected to rock the carrier lever, and connections tor rocking the shaft trom the actua- 3. A stitch forming mechanism having, in combination a looper, a vertical lo'ope-r lever on the upper end of which the loo-per is car-f meal, a carrier lever having a transverse piv ot on which the loo-per lever is mounted, an actuator lever, a link connecting the actuator lever to the looper lever to swing it on its pivot, a rock-shaft having a'cam'engaging the carrier lever, an arm on the rock shaft, an arm moving with the actuator lever, and a link connecting the arms.
, 4s A stitch forming mechanism having,'in
combination, an under needlecarrier, an acpivot on which. the looper leveris mounted,
a rock shaft provided with'acam, for rocking the carrier lever, link connecting the looper lever with the needle'actuatlng lever,
and connectionsfor rocking the rockfshaft' from the needle actuator lever.
5. A stitch forming mechanisinhaving, in combination, an under needle carrier, a lo-oper', a looper lever on the upper'end'of which the looper is carried, a carrier lever having a transverse horizontal pivot on which the loopeilever is mounted toswing to take the loop from the uppernee'dle, an actuator connected to reciprocate the needle carrier, connections from the actuator to the looperlever, and separate-connections from the actuator to the carrier leverlto move the looper laterally.
6. A stitch forming mechanism having, in combination, an under needlecarrie'r, an actuator lever connected to reciprocate the needle carrier, a looper, a vertical looper lever on the upperend of which the loo'per is carried, a carrier lever having transverse pivot on which'the looper: lever is mounted, a link connecting the actuating lever to the lo-oper lever, and means operated from; the actuator lever for rocking the carrier lever.- 7.- A stitch forming mechanism having, in combination, an upper needle, an under needle, a looper, a vertical loo-per lever, a
carrier lever mounted to swing on'a horizon-- tal axis and having art-rans-verse: horizontal pivot for the loope-r lever, an actuator, and
