UNITED lSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD' J'. LANG, OF CICEIR'O, ILLINOIS.
cUToUr PANEL.
Application led October 20, 1924. Serial No. 744,691.
To all whom it may concer-n.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. LANs,
Ia citizen of the United States, residing 1n l Cicero, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in vCutout Panels, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates boards which are the centers from' which electrical energy'is distributed to light and power circuits, and has for its object to produce a construction that shall be simple,
-novel' and compact, while at the lsame time permitting the use of two independent-terminalsvfor each fuse receptacle.
The various features of novelty whereby my invention is characterized will hereinv sent two main bus after be pointed out with particularity in the claims; but, for a full understanding of my invention and of its objects and advantages, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection .with the accompanying drawings,`
wherein:
Figure 1 is ranged in accordance with a preferredform of my .invention and Fig. 2 1s a section on an enlarged scale taken approximately on A,the linel crossed by the arrow 1n Fig. 1
and having associated therewith the indicating character 2.
Referring 4to the drawing, 1 and 2 reprebars either of which may be the positive and the other the negative; and 3 is aneutral bus bar which, 1n
the arrangement shown, is in the form of a single element lying between the other two bars. In the arrangement shown, the
arts are mounted on a suitable base 4 of insulating material, the bar 3 lying fiat on the base and extending along the longitudinal center of the latter, while the bars 1 `parallel with the base.
and 2 are bent upwardly adjacent to the ends that constitute the main terminals, so that the major portions of these two bars lie at a considerable distance above and Connected with the bar 3 are cross pieces 5 extending at right angles thereto and each having at each end a screw 6 or other means for attaching a. wire. In other words, regardless of Whether to panel4A a plan view of a panel ar-l the neutral bar be a single element or not, the arrangement is such that the neutral element is provided with two vrows of terminals arranged one row near one edge of the base andthe other row near the oppo- -site edge.
rangement'causes an increase in the length' of the panel.
In t e arrangement shown, there are twelve fuse receptacles 7, six above each of the two bus bars 1 and 2. Furthermore, each block of insulating material through which'oneof the 4bus bars passes, is shown as `made up of three sections 8, arranged 'end to` end, there being two receptacles in each section. However, this particular arrangement is not of importance except that it aifords ameans for providing individual vunits that may be assembled conveniently to form a panel of any desired'length andV containing any desired number of sockets or fuse receptacles. In the arrangement shown, each insulating block section is rovided with a lateral projection 9, and t ere is a screw 1Q passing downwardly through this Vprojection into the base, for securing the insulating member to the base.
The fuse receptaclesV are shown as taking a conventional form, each consisting ofa shell fitting in 'a socket 11 in the insulatingy block and having a central terminal12 in the form of a screw that passes through the .bottom of the same and is engaged with the underlying bus bar. The shell member of the receptacle has attached thereto a metal bar 13 that extends laterally therefrom and lies on top of a low ortion 14 of the insulatngblock arrange on the outer side of the'block. Each of the short bars 13 is provided with a screw 15 or other means for attaching a wire. The parts are so proportioned that each of the terminals 6 connected with the neutral bus bar lies just beyond the outer edge of the corresponding j circuit in which one ofthe fuses is to be placed, may be connected to a terminal 15 and a terminal 6 lying one a'bove the other but spaced apart far enough` to prevent in- ,terference with each other. There is always available room in the vertical direction and therefore the panel as a whole need not be thickened in order to permit the terminals to be displaced vertically of each other; whereas it would be necessary to lengthen the p alnel if the terminals Awere placed side by s1 e.
There are several features to which reference has not yet been specifically made, but which are of considerable value. One of these features hasto do with the provision of means for permitting the same structure to be used conveniently with switches in addition to the fuse receptacles. Therefore I have eut through the inner side of each insulating Iblock, below each receptacle, a slot 16 inthe plane of the corresponding main bus bar; whereby switches may be placed beside the insulating blocks and be connected to the b us bars through `the slots.
Another feature relates to the upper feedwire terminals. It will be seen that the bars 13 are connected to the shells of the fuse receptacles by screws 17, one screw for each bar. These screws pass down through the innerends of the bars into screw-threaded sleeves .18 molded directly into the blocks. In the same way, the terminal screws '15 i pass through the outer ends of the bars 13 and into screw-threaded sleeves 19 molded into the outer4 ortions ofthe blocks which form the lshoul ers 14.
While I have illustrated and described with particularity only a single preferred form of my invention, I do vnot desire to be limited to the exact structural details thus illustrated and described; 'but intend to coverv all forms and arrangements which lcome within the delinitions of my invention constituting the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A cutout panel comprising two main bus bars, fuse receptacles distributed along each bar and electrically connectedv therewith, a terminal for a `feed wire associated with each receptacle, a second terminal arranged directly below and spaced apart lfrom each of the aforesaid terminals, and
with, two feed-wire terminals for each receptacle arranged one directly .above the other, one terminal of each pair being connected tothe corresponding receptacleand the other being connected to a conductor common to all `of the corresponding ter? minals.
3. A cutout panel comprising two blocks of insulating material, va bus bar passing through each of said blocks, a plurality of fuse receptacles in each block, each receptacle being electrically connected with the correspondlng b ar, two feed-wire terminals arranged beside each receptacle and arranged one directly above the other, one terminal of each pair being connected to the corresponding receptacles and the other terminals being connected to the corresponding terminals of the other pairs.
4. A cutout panel comprising a base, two separated blocks of insulating material on said base, a bus' bar passino' through each of said blocks, a .plurality of fuse receptacles in each block electrically connected to the corresponding bar, a terminal for a feed wire associated with each receptacle and located on the outer side ofthe corresponding block at a considerable distance above said base, a neutral bar extending through the space between the blocks, and a series of terminals corresponding in number to the aforesaid terminals electrically connected with said neutral bar and each located on t-he base below one of the first-mentioned terminals.
5. In combination, a base, a bar of conducting material overlying said base, a series of cross arms connected with thel aforesaid bar, a terminal for a feed wire at each end of each of said arms, blocks of insulating material overlying said arms, fuse receptacles in said blocks, two bus bars extending through said blocks and each electrically connected with the 'corresponding fuse receptacles, and terminals for feed Vwires mounted on said blocks above the aforesaid terminals and electrically connected to said receptacles. o
In testimony whereof, I sign this speciication. v
EDWARD J. LANG.
