Be it known that I, SAMUEL SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eyeshades, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to eye shades. Its essential objectsare to adapt the shade to use under different or varying conditions of light intensity or color environment; to enable the adaptation to be effected with facility' and to attain these ends in a simple and inexpensive structure.

My invention consists in such'parts and in such combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification Figures 1 and 2 are a plan view and a side elevation respectively of an eye shade embodying my invention,

Figure 4, a front elevation of the frame with the filling plate removed.

In detail my device includes an open frame 8 consisting of an arcuate forwardly directed celluloid rim 9, U shaped in cross sec-- tion comprising a longitudinally dispoced back strip portion 10, and a similarly disposed front strip portion 11 formed by folding the original material of the rim with an intermediate bend 12. The rin 9 therefore forms a socket 13. Integral with the strip 10 at the ends of the member 9 is an upwardly and forwardly inclined arched sup port 15, flat in cross section, and continuous in the plane of the strip 10. The two frame members 9 and 15, therefore, have between them, except at their ends, an intervening spacr 16, as shown in Figure 4.

In the ends of the frame, at the junction of the strips 10 and 15 are pivot members 17 passing through the inner ends of temples 0r ear clips 19 having down turned end portions 21, preferably of celluloid.

Flexible filling plates or insert sheets 23 of celluloid of different colors are provided. These are transversely curved, and have curved lower and upper edges and pointed ends to conform in contour with the frame 8 and close the space 16.

Anyone of these plates 23 temporarily de sired may be mounted in the frame by sliding the lower edge of the former into the socket 13 where it fits preferably with a slight frictional contact with the walls 10 and 11, while its upper edge rests against the upper face of the member 15. When the wearer because of a change of light or surroundings desires the eye shade to transmit or reflect another color, he manually pulls the first inserted plate out of its seat and slides into the frame a sheet of the other desired color.

I claim 1. In an eye shade, an oblong open frame rim. a filling plate detachably engaging the rim and support, and ear rests upon the ends of the frame.

In an eye shade, an open frame compris ng a curved rim U shaped in cross section, and an elevated forwardly inclined support connected at its ends to the rim and between said ends bowed away from said. rim, a filling plate closing the space between the rim and support slidably seated in the rim and resting upon the support, and ear rests supported by the rim.

3 In an eye shade, an open frame com prising a non metallic curved rim provided with a socket, and a flat curved support inclined relatively to the rim and between said ends bowed away from said rim integral with the rim. a celluloid filling plate slidably mounted in the socket and loosely resting against the support, and an ear rest pivotallv supported by the rim.
