BREAK RELAY FOR RADIO Application filed November To. all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SALUsTIANo B. GAR- onLLANo, a citizen of the Philippine Islands, residing at Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Break Relay for Radio ReceivingSending Sets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvementsv in radio receiving and sending sets, and particularly to a break relay adapted to be interposed in the antenna circuit, and operable for controlling the circuit.
An object of the invention resides in providing a device by which the signals may be periodically broadcast, in the usual manner, and in the sending operation will connect the sending circuits for broadcasting the signal, with the antenna circuit, and will simultaneously short circuit a receiving set or circuit connected with the antenna, which is operable between the sending of the inipulses, for receiving signals over the same antenna.
Another object of the invention is to combine a sending and receiving set, so that the same may be used with a single antenna circuit, wherein means is provided for short circuiting the receiving set, during the sending of a signal by the sending circuit or set, but which is fully operable during the interval between the sending of signals.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device, for controlling the antenna circuit adapted for. common use, with the sending and receiving set, which not only operates to control the antenna circuit, so as to cut out the receiving set, during the operation of the sending set, but which also operates to energize the sending circuit, for sending the signal impulse.
Other objects and improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts, are more particularly pointed out, in the following detailed description and claim, directed to a preferred form of the invention, it being understood that various other constructions and methods of carrying out the desired result, may be obtained, that are within the scope of this invention, and
without departing from the scope of the appended claim.

The primary of the sending transformer is indicated'at 7, which is connected in circuit with a step-up transformer 8, a quenched gap 9, and a condenser 10, which parts are merely shown to indicate a portion of the sending circuit of usual and well known type.
An electromagnet, forming a part of the structure of the present invention, is indicated at 11, which includes a pair of serially connected coils 12, having a movable core 13 connected together at their free ends by a bridge piece 14, forming a movable armature which carries a projecting arm 15, on the free end of which is pivotally. mounted a breaker arm 16, carrying at its ends, contact point 17 and 18, respectively, which are adapted for engagement with contacts 19 and 20, respectively, carried by a stationary arm 21. The breaker arm 16 has a limited pivotal movement on the end of the arm 15, limited by the stop 22, while a coil spring 23, normally under compression, is positioned between the breaker arm 16 and the contact. arm 21, for normally retaining the breaker arm against the stop 22, for a purpose which will presently appear. The contacts 18 and 20, are connected in the respective sides of the circuit of the primary of the step-up transformer 8, while a wire 5 of the antenna circuit is connected to the contact 17, and a wire 24 connects the con tact; 19, with the ground 6, so that when said contacts 17 and 19 .are engaged, the

When it is desired to send a signal, using the circuits, as above described, the depression of the key 26 will energize its circuit, and thecoils 12 ot the electromagnet, which are operable, tor projecting the cores 13 and the cross arm 1 1 from the coils 12, to move the breaker arm 16, toward the contact arm 21, in such a manner that the contacts 17 and 19 will first contact, followed by the contact between the contact points 18 and 20, due to a relative pivotal movement of the lnieaker arm, on the arm 15, which will cause the circuit from the primary 8 of the ending setup transformer, and energize and operate the sending circuit for the sending of a signal impulse, in the usual and well known manner. A receiving circuit is indicated generally at 27. and the receiving -ransformer 28 thereoi has the primary 29 connected by the wires 30 and 31, to the contacts 19 and 17 respectively.
During the interval between the sending of signal impulses, the cont- acts 17 and 19, and 18 and 20 respectively, are held disconnected, or in open relation, as illustrated in the drawing, through the medium of the compression spring 23, at which time, the wires 30 and 81 make a circuit through the primary 29, with the antenna and the ground, so that the antenna used in sending signal impulses, is used between impulses, for the receiving of signals by the receiving set 2?, in a manner which should be readily appreciated by an inspection of the drawing. Upon the energization ofthe coils 12 for the sending of the signal, which operates, as above described, to close the contacts 17 and 19, and 18 and 20, respectively, it will be seen that by having the limited pivotal movement of the breaker arm 16, the contacts 17 and 19 having elec trical contact prior to the engagement of contacts 18 and 20 will short circuit the connections 30 and S1, and the primary of the receiving transformer 28, so that the subsequent sending of the signal by the engagement of the contacts 18 and 20, and the energization of the antenna and ground circuits will not act to affect the receiving set, or to impress heavy currents in the primary thereof, due to the short circuiting of the receiving circuit prior to he making of the sending circuit. In this way, the receiving circuit is all times protected against injury through the heavy currents used in sending signals, while dur ing the intermission between tie sending of signal impulses, the receiving set is contor the mounting of aerials, is substantially 7 limited, and which etticiently controls both the sending and receiving circuits, to prevent damage to either, and effectively controls the sending of the signals, by the send ing set.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed is:
A device or the class described, comprisan energizable coil, a movable core mounted in said coil for axial movement theretl rough in accordance with the energization of the coil, a bar member connected with and projecting from said core, a breaker arm having its central portion pivotally mounted on the end of said bar member, means on said breaker arm for engagement with said bar member for limiting the pivotal movement in one direction of the breaker arm on said bar member, a pair of contact members carried in the free end of said breaker member, a stationary contact member having apair of contacts at the end portions thereof insulated from one another, resilient means positioned between said breaker member and said stationary contact member normally operative to hold said breaker member at one limit of its pivotal movement, manually controlled means for energizing said electrical coil adapted to operate said core for moving the breaker member toward said stationary contact member, the contact at one end of said breaker arm being adapted for engagement with the corresponding con tact on the stationary contact member before engagement of the contact at the opposite end of said member, said first mentioned contact being included in the antenna circuit and receiving the circuit, the last mentioned contacts being included in the send ing circuits, whereby said coil will control the operation of the sending circuitfand short circuit the receiving circuit at the same time closing the antenna circuit before the operation of the sending circuit.
