Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
MICHAEL' MAHONY, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
lmPRovEMENT |N GRATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,293, dated December 29, 1874; application led September 30, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL MAHoNY, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Shaking Grates; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the same, reference being had to t-he accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figures l and 2 represent the two parts of the grate as they appear when separated. Fig. 3 represents the two parts as put together.
My invention consists in a grate made of two parts, and furnished with projections or swells upon their upper sides, and so arranged that one of the parts may slide endwise upon the other part, to riddle down the ashes, and both turn together when shaking' the grate laterally, or when dumping it.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
What I `term the upper section or part of the grate is cast with the longitudinal bars a a, upon which are.. the swells or projections b, and with orossbars c, in which are notches d; and upon the ends, respectively, otl this upper section there are cast half-rounds e f, which, when placed upon the under section or part, i'orin trunnions or journals, upon which the grate may be rocked laterally or dumped. 'lheunder section or part ot the grate has cast upon it two plain outside bars, g g, upon which the projections 7L of the upper part rest and move, andalso bars t', upon which there are swells j. These bars are connected below by cross-bars 7c, and the spaces between the bars is sufficient to take in one of t-he bars a of the upper part, so that when the two parts are laid together the bars of both shall be on the same plane, or nearly so. Upon this under part, too, are cast halt-rounds m fn, corresponding to those efof the upper section, and to form with them the trunnions or journals, upon which the entire grate is shaken. In or on the half-round n there is a projection, r, which takes into a groove, s, cast in the under part ofthe upper half-round, f, and on said upper half-round f there is a stud, 0, by which, when the two parts are laid together, the upper one may be moved endwise, while the lower one is stationary, and both can be rocked together. The other half rounds, e m, are similarly furnished with a stud on one and a groove in the other, The two parts f m, that form, when placed together, one ot the journals upon which the grate can be turned, have their ends, as at t, made sided, so as to form a square or sided shank, to receive the crank by which the grate is turned.
What I claim as my invention is- A grate composed ot' two parts, the bars oi' which are furnished with swells, and alternate with each other iu the same plane, substantially as described, so that one can move endwise upon its mate or fellow, and both rock together, as and for the purpose specifled.
MICHAEL MAHONY.
