RETAINER FOR GLAZINGS `.AND THE LIKE.-
Application filed March 31, 1925. Serial No. 19,749.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it knownthat I, EDGAR H. BRISTOL, a citizen of the United States, andja resident of Foxboro, county of Norfolk, and YState of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Retainers for Glazings and the in the door frame or bezel ring of suc-h inf struments as pressure gages, thermographs and the like.
My invention will best be understood by reference to the following description of an illustrative embodiment thereof shown by way of example in the accompanying 'draw' ings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of the door frame of'a reoording instrument showing a glazing clip illustrative of my invention; and
Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are'sections illustrating successive. steps vin the application of the clip.
Referring to Fig. 1, I have there shown a portion of the annular door frame of a recording instrument embodying the main cylindricalportion 5 and the inwardly eX- tending -annular flange 7 against which rests the glazing 9. The glazing may be clam ed in position by the use of a suitable num er of retaining lclips I disposed ,at intervals around the door frame, one of the clips being illustrated in the figure.
The retaining clip may be made of a suitable flexible and preferably somewhat resilient metal and may embody-a base 11 of some length adapted to b e presented to the inner surface of the part 5 of the frame. Adjacent the ends of this base 11 and projecting angularly therefrom, preferably at a. somewhat obtuse angle as illustrated in Fig. 2, are fingers 13 adapted to extend over and engaged the glaring 9. The clip may be secured in position by means of a clamping screw 15 passing through the base 11 substantially centrally thereof between the two fingers 13 and tapping into the bodyv of the frame 5. The screw 15 may pass through a diagonal slot 17 in the base 11.
In the preferred form of the' invention shown wherein the fingers 13 extend outwardly at an oblique angle as shown in Fig. 2, the parts Vmay be assembled as graphically illustrated in Figs. 2. 3 and 4. .In Fig. 2 the clip is secured in position by the screw 15, which, however, is not set up.- The clip may then be pressed circumferentially of ,the frame by a force applied toone end thereof and as the screw 15 slides in a slot l17 the clip asa whole will be moved transversely toward the glazing 9, the fingers- 13 being pressed against the glazing to the position shown i'nFig. 3. It, will be noted that the 'base 11 is so formed as to permit the circumferential sliding movement and the resultant transverse movement due to the reaction of slot 17 and may move freely over the inner face of part 5. After thismovement the clip as a whole `-is positioned as shown in Fig. 3 somewhat diagonally across the angle defined by the inner'surface of the 9. While the clip is eld by its end against retrograde movement circumferentially the screw vmay be set up, drawing the clip home in this angle and giving a final retaining preure which may bend .inwardly the yieldable clamping fingers 13 in the manner'illu'strated in Fig.- 4.
i By providing the body 11 of considerable circumferential length the oblique slot V17 may be provided which permits the adjustment described which both facilitates assembly and compensates for various thicknesses of'glass, packing and the like irrespective of the. position vofthe holes for the clamping screws. The fingers 13 are disposed at opposite ends of this relatively long further distributed at separated points ovci a comparatively large area of glass andthe pressure is inwardly of the edge thereof-.so

In spite of the length of the clip as a whole the fingers 13 maybe made narrow and each may yield freely either to or beyond the position of Fig. 4.
Having described in detail the particular embodiment of `my invention shown by way of example in the accompanying drawingsl and pointed out without attempting to be exhaustive a few of the advantages obtained, the features exemplified thereby which I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I shall express in the following claims.`
Claims :e-
1. 'In combination with a bezel or frame and a glazing received therein, a retaining member comprising an extended base provided with a surface presented to the frame capable'of free sliding movement thereover, a pair of angularly directed fingers at the extremities of the base to overlie the glazing and a substantially centrally/ located screw passing through said base and'clamp` ing it to the frame.
2. In combination with a bezel or frame and a glazing received therein, a retaining member comprising an extended base provided with a surface presented to the frame capable of free sliding movement thereover, a pair of angularly directed fingers at the extremities of the base to overlie the glaz" ing, said base having an oblique slot'in the central portion thereof and a screw passing through the slot for clamping said member to the frame.
3. In combination with a bezel or fram and a glazing retained therein, a clip comprising an extended base provided with a surface presented to the frame capable of free sliding movement thereover and having an angularly directed portion t0 bear on the glazing, said base having a diagonal slot and a clamping device passing through the slot and engaging the frame, the whole providing a structure wherein the clip may first be pressed lengthwise by a force applied to an end thereof and the angularly directed portion thereby pressed against the glazing and may then be secured by setting up the clamping device.
4. In combination with a curvilinear bezel or frame and a glazing received therein, a retaining member having a yielding base presented to the frame and normally adapt- 4ed to extend oord-like across the curve thereof, a pair of angularly directed fingers at the extremities of the base to overlie the glaz EDGAR H.
