Description
* UNITED srn'rns PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID B. TIFFANY, OF XENIA, OHIO.
PUTTING PILLOWS AND BOLSTERS INTO THEIR CASES.
Specification of Letters It atent No. 15,828, dated September 30, 1856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID B. TIFFANY, of Xenia, in the county of Greene and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Instrument for Putting Pillows "and Bolsters into their Slips or Cases and Taking Out the Same; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1, represents the broad side of the instrument, and Fig. 2, the edge of the same. i
The instrument is composed of two pieces of wood or other suitable material sufiiciently elastic and light; and is shaped substantially as represented in the drawings, viz :The two pieces are united at one end, with an intervening piece a b, so as to retain them at a little distance apart, at this end. The portion from A to B, is rounded so as to serve for a handle to hold the instrument. The two pieces thence continue, of about the width of the handle, from B to E; and this portion of each is hollowed on the inside, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to leave sufficient space to receive the pillowsor bolsters between them. The ends D, C, are widened, as shown in Fig. 1, t0 the extent of six inches, more or less; and spring together at E, but flare apart thence to the extremities, as shown in Fig. 2. These broad ends of the pieces serve the double purpose of keeping the cases extended outside thereof, and the pillows or bolsters spread out between them. The flaring mouth D, C, enables the pillows or bolsters to be readily drawn into the instrument; and the meeting points E, serve to hold the pillows in the instrument. The whole length of the instrument should be sufficient to receive nearly the entire length of the pillows or bolsters, leaving only one end thereof projecting out a little for the purpose of grasping when the instrument is to be withdrawn from the case.
My instrument is used as follows: The handle A, B, is brought against the body of the person using it, or is. placed on the bed post; the end D, C, extending forward,the pillow tick or bolster is then drawn in between the open ends at D, O, down into the long aperture between B and E leaving the outer end projecting a little beyond the ends D and C, the mouth of the slip or case is then taken and drawn on over the end of the tick which is firmly compressed between the side pieces at E, then the pillow or bolster is easily, by means of said instru-' ment thrust entirely into the slip or case. The instrument is then easily withdrawn by taking hold of the end of the tick from the outside of the slip or case with one hand, and withdrawing the instrument with the other.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The instrument having the peculiar construction-substantially as herein described. for the purpose of inserting pillows and bolsters into their cases.
DAVID B. TIFFANY. Witnesses:
I. A. SEXTON, ARTHUR TAYLOR.
