MARK CURTIS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEATlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,252, dated Dccember 29, 1874; application filed April 25, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARK CURTIS, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a vertical section of my stove, and Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view. Fig. 5 is a front sectional. view, showing the vertical flues.
This invention has relation to heatingstoves 5 and it consists of a novel arrangement of flues whereby the heated products of combustion will descend behind the firechamber to the base of the stove, thence pass forward to the front thereof, thence rise to a horizontal line, pass to the back of the stove, and escape into the smoke-pipe, whereby a very large heat-radiating surface is obtained in a coinparatively small stove.
The following is a description of my improvement:
In the annexed drawings 1 have represented my improvement applied to an open fire-grate heater. A is a fire-chamber in which is placed a grate, B, which chamber is provided with doors a a, which may be provided with mica lights. Below the grate B is the ash-receptacle, which may be also provided with doors I) b. D designates the hearth, the sides and back of which are hollow, as indicated by the letter 0, thus forming a flue at the base of the stove for radiating heat from the products of combustion circulating therein. Back of the fire-chamber A is a descending flue, d,
which communicates below with the flue c, and at its upper end with said firechamber, as shown in Fig. 1, and between this flue cl and the back wall of the fire-chamber is an air-space, G, into which air is admitted from beneath the hearth D. The upper end of the air-space Gr communicates with a chamber, H, which is at the back of an oven, J, by means of a number of vertical pipes, g, between which pipes the flames and products of combustion pass on their way down through the descending flue cl. The upper end of the chamber H is covered by the same plate which covers the oven-chamber J, and that portion of this plate which covers the chamber H is perforated for allowing the heated air to escape into the room.
After the heated products of combustion have descended to the bottom of the line cl, and passed forward through the flue-spaces c c, on opposite sides of the hearth, the products are conducted up through vertical lines, L, to a horizontal flue, L, thence through this flhe to the smoke-pipe g. In passing through the said fines the products radiate heat into the room, and also receive heat through the wall of the lire-chamber. In practice, an opening, 6, is made through the back wall of the firechamber leading into the back part of the horizontal flue L, which opening will be provided with a damper for giving a direct draft from the tire-chamber to the smoke-pipe, whenever such a draft is found necessary.
That I claim, and desire to secure. by Letters Patent, is
The rear-descending flue d, the side baseflues c, the front rising fines L, and the top or oven fines L, in combination with an openfront stove and an air-heating flue, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
MARK CURTIS.
