, a British subject, residing at Turner Bridge Works, Bolton, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Vertical Automatic Turning and of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vertical auto;
matic turning and like machine tools of the typecomprising a plurality of chucks, or
'. work holding and rotating spindles, mounted upon a rotatable bed adapted to bring the 'said chucks or spindles in due order into the correct positions for enabling the series of tools or cutters to operate upon the work;

the projection 7 has been moved sufliciently to trip the said lever 9 against its spring action to permit the clutch 1* to be again engaged with the wheel 11 by spring 6 acting onlever 5. Another quick rotary or angular movement is then imparted to the bed or table until the clutch is again disconnected as aforesaid when the slow movement follows.
For the rotation of the chucks e with spindles e there is preferably employed a c ange speed gear of any suitable type in association with the aforesaid belt'pulley g, actuating a worm 11 engaging a worm wheel, or annulus 12, mounted in the base of the machine and carrying with it the annulus 13 which engages the pinions 14 on the respective chuck spindles e.
Upon opposite sides of the rotatable bed or table aand in radial alignment therewith, are disposed tool carrying slides as 15 supported independently of the aforesaid central column or standard d and preferably by means of supplementary frames as 16 standing on the same floor level as that of the main frame or base 0 of the machine. Each of the said slides 15 is reciprocated by a lever 17 which is rocked or oscillated by a pair of cams 18 fixed on the periphery of a cam drum secured to aforesaid shaft '0. The aforesaid cam drum u may carry the cams 18 for the operation of one of the slides 15 whilst for the operation of the other slide, cams 18 are mounted on a drum as u fixed to the opposite end of shaft 4). By the tools carried in said slides, forming, surfacing or like operations can be readily performedon the work pieces at the stop or rest positions of the bed a between its intermittent rotary movements, and simultaneously with the operation on the said work pieces of the tools carried by the headstock or holder 01 on the column d aforesaid. Each slide 15 is preferably adapted to accommodate a plurality of tools so that the work pieces at two different positions on the bed or table, or in two of the chucks e, may be operated upon simultaneously from the one slide. Thus with the two slides (and the invention is not limited to that number), the forming, surfacing or like tools will be operating simultaneously on the work carried by four of the chucks e on their spindles e. v
To obtain a positive drive of the work carrying or chuck spindles e with smooth or shockless starting and stopping of the same, at the loading and unloading position (where the work is attached to and removed from the chucks), there is arranged in association with the toothed wheel or pinion 14 of each spindle, a clutch device comprising sleeves as 19 and'20 (Figure 6) disposed respectively within and without each other, each sleeve being positioned by its own spring as 21 and 22 respectively. The inner sleeve 19 is adapted to make preliminary or frictional contact between the pinion 14 and the spindle e and thereby enable the lattter to be rotated sufficiently to ensure a smooth and shockless full or positive engagement between the outer sleeve 20 and the wheel 14: by way of the claw-like or positively engaging elements at the lower end of said sleeve. The outer sleeve 20 is feather keyed or splined to the inner sleeve 19 and the latter to the spindle e. In the example illustrated the loading and unloading position for the chucks is at A (Figure 4). At such position there is formed or attached to the base 0 of the machine beneath thebed a, a pair of fixed cams or projections as 23 and 2a with which engage the flange on outer sleeve 20 as each spindle in turn, by the rotary angular movements of the table, approaches the said position A. On such engagement the said sleeve 20 is raised to first de-elutch it from the pinion 1 1 and then, on its abutment against the flange or collar at the top of sleeve 19, to de-cluteh the latter from 14:. The rotation of the chuck is thus arrested. On the subsequent movement of the bed or table the said sleeves are carried away from the said cams 23 and 24: thus permitting the sleeves to be again clutched with the pinion 14:, the clutching being first effected by the frictional contact of the sleeve 19 with the said wheel followed by the positive clutching as aforesaid between sleeve 20 and the said wheel.
A ball thrust bearing collar as 25 is mounted at the lower end of each spindle e to receive the end thrusts set up by the springs 21 and 22 aforesaid.
For the accurate positioning or indexing of the bed or table a to bring the work chucks e and their spindles e into correct alignment with the tools, a tapered plug or like member 26 actuated through lever 27 and spring 28 is adapted to wedge or enter gaps provided in a pair of bush like parts as 29 and 30 (Figure 7) of which one is fitted in the moving bed or table a and the other in the fixed support 0. The said wedge like plug or connection effectually avoids any inaccuracy such as may arise with the use of the ordinary positioning or indexing pins. The plug is actuated, against the spring 28, by the cam 31 on the aforesaid cam drum u, said cam 31 engaging the lever 27 as shown at Figure 7 g a The aforesaid shaft '0 carrying the cam drum u driven from the belt pulley f through the gearing aforesaid, extends across the machine. At or near its centre the said shaft '0 is fitted with a bevel wheel or pinion 32 engaging a like pinion 33 attached to the lower end of the vertical shaft or spindle 34 disposed in the central column or standard d for feeding or actuating thetool slides of the head stock or holder (2 mounted on the column. At the end of the shaft 4) opposite to that on which is secured the main cam drum u there is aflixed a corresponding cam drum for actuating the radially disposed tool slide 15 at that side of the central column. Thus, all the feed 'motions, both for the radially disposed tool slides 15 and the tool slides of the'head-- stock or holder d on the central column or standard (13, are obtained from the one horizontally disposed shaft 1; which is under clutch control as aforesaid. During the slow rotary or angular movements of the shaft '2), or when it is, driven through the worm z, the various tool slides will receive their forwardor feed movements, whilst during the quick rotary movements of said shaft 1;, or when it is driven through the bevel pinion j, the said slides will receive their quick return movements.
In the use of a machine as aforesaid the operative or attendant hassimply to insert a work piece in each of the chucks 6 when,
by the intermittent rotary movements of the bed a, they are brought to the aforesaid loading and unloading position A (Figure 4), the work pieces being removed from the chucks at the same position after they have been carried by the bed a through one complete rotation of the latter and subjected to p the action of the respective tools during the stops between the said intermittent rotary movements of the bed a. Thus, after the first complete rotation of the bed the operative, on the arrival of each chuck at the stop position A, removes the work piece which has been completed by the tools and inserts another piece to be similarly operated upon by the tools at the respective stop positions in the further-rotation of the bed.

5. In vertical automatic machine tools having the combination claimed in claim 1,
means for accurately positioning and locking the said bed after each rotary movement, comprising a tapered plug, a cam for actuating said plug, and a pair of adjustable bushes forming a ring and detachablyh engaged by said plug, one of said bushes fitting in the bed and the other in the said base on which the said bed is rotatably mounted.
