i To all whom it may concei'n Be it known that I, Fnrrz Eonnsuonrnn, a- 1 citizen of Germany, residing at Charlottenburg, in the State of Prussia, Germany, have 5 invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Atomizing Liquid Fuel; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for atomizing 'liquid fuel, and more particularly in apparatus comprising 1 a nozzle for delivering a jet of air, a plate disposed in front of and spaced from the delivery end of the nozzle and formed with a hole in alignment with the bore of the nozzle, and a passage for conducting liquid .fuel to the circular space provided between said plate-and the delivery end of the nozzle, the fuel being ejected and atomized by the jetof air delivered from the nozzle and through the hole of the plate. The object of the 1111- provements is to'provide an apparatus of this type in which the fuel is minutely atomized, so that liquid fuel of high specific gravity may be completely burnt. With this object in view my nvention'consists in constructing the said plate with a hole equal to or smaller than the area of the air nozzle. I-have discovered that when thus constructing the apparatus the. fuel has no opportunity to flow between the jet of air and the 85 wall ofthe hole of the plate, so that any particleof'the fuel is subject to the atomizing action of the jet of air.
- For the purpose ofexplaining the invention several examples embodying the same have been shown in the accompanying drawings in which the same reference characters have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts. In said drawings,

such as steam boilers. metallurgical furnaces,
etc. In describing the invention, reference will be had to the use of the atomizing apparatus. in an internal combustion engine. Referrlng now to Figs. 1-3, the cylinder 7 "of an internal combustion engine carries a head 8 having a yoke 9 fixed thereto. The said yoke is provided with ama'nifold 10 constructed so as to provide a seatfor my improved atoniizing apparatus. As shown the manifold is made integral with an axial sleeve 11 having the atomizing apparatus mounted therein. The atomizing apparatus consists of a T-shaped block 12 having a tubular member 13 screwed to its end. To
the reduced end of the said member a nipple 14 is screwed bynieans of which adisk .15 is secured to the front end of the tubular member 13.. The lock- 12 is formed with anv axial bore havi g a tubular member 16 fitted therein, which member is formed with an extension ornozzle 17 passing through the bore of the member 13. 13" are such that an annular passage 18 is provided between the said parts. I The said passage communicates through afpassage 19 made inthe block 12 with a pipe 20 securedto the block by means of acap screw 21.
The axial bore of the member 16 communicates through a bore 22 with a pipe 23 fixed to the block 12 by means of a cap. scre 24. As appears more particularly from Fig. 3 the disk 15 is formed'with a recess 25 providing a space'between the end.
In the operation .ofthe apparatus fuelis supplied through the pipe 20, the bore 19 and the annular passa e'18 to the space provided between the delivery end of the nozzle 17 and the disk 15, and air under presfold 10, and it is admitted to the cylinder 7 through the intake valve 28.
. stood that my The modification shown in Fig. 4 is similarto the one shown in Fig. 3. But instead of a disk 15 provided with a recess 25 a thin disk 30 is provided which is s aced from the delivery end of the nozzle 1 by means of a ring 31.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a modification in which a plurality of disks 32 is placed in front of the air nozzle 17, each of the said disks being provided with a central hole 33 having conical walls so as to provide sharp annular edges. The diameters of all the holes are not larger than the diameter of the delivery passage of the nozzle 17, and preferably the said diameters are reduced from the disk adjacent to the said delivery .end'of the nozzle tothe outer disk. Thereby the velocity of the jet of air and fuel is gradually increased, and each annular edge assists in further atomizing the fuel.
In Fig-6 I have shown a modification provided with an inner disk 34 of the construction shown in Fig. 4, the said disk being formed with an outwardly flaring wall.- On the'said disk a second disk 35 is superposed in which the wall of the hole 36 flares outwardly to opposite sides, so that the edge 37 is located at a part intermediate the end faces of the said disk. By thus constructing the disks a mixing chamber 38 is provided between the disks 34 and 35. 'i
By. unscrewing the caps 14 the disks can be readily removed and replaced by disks of other dimensions, so that my improved atomizing apparatus canbe readily adapted to fuels of different specific gravities.

An apparatus for atomizing li uid fuel, comprising a nozzle provided wit a passage for deliveringa jet of air, a plurality of superposed disks in front of the delivery end of said passa e and formed with holes in alignment with said passage andhaving areas not larger than that of said passage, the hole through one of said disks being flared, and a passage for conducting liquid fuel to the space intermediate the delivery end of said passage and the adjacent disk;
