RIM LOCK.
Application 'filed' September 8, 1924. Serial-No. 736,575
To ZZ ift/0m it 'may conc-em."
3e it known that l, Lne Fnnnn, a'citizen ot the United States, residing at Nortolk, in the county ot Nortolk and State ot Virginia, have invented a new and usetul Rim Lock, ot which the tollowing is a specitication.`
This invention aims to provide novel means whereby a demountable rim may be held releasably on `a wheel telly, it being possible to niount the rim on the telly and to remove the rim trom the telly quickly and with the expenditure ot little etto'rt.
It is within the province ot the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility ot devices ot that type to which the invention appertains.
Although a preterred torni has been shown in the drawings, it will be. understood that a-inechanic, working within the scope ot what is claimed, may make changes with out departing trom the spirit ot the inveir tion.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure 1 showsin side elevation, a wheel equipped with the device torming the subject matter ot this application, parts being broken away; Figures 2, 3 and 4 are sections, Vtaken respectively, on the lines 2-2, 3-3, and 4-44 ot Figurel 1; Figure 5 is a cross section showing the lug on the rim interengaged with the shittable ring on the wheel telly; Figure 6 and Figure 7 are sections on the line 6-6 ot Figur 5 and showing the retaining` ring in slightly ditterent positions; Figure 8 is a traginental circumterential section wherein parts appear in elevation.
The wheel telly 1 may be ot any desired sort, but, preterably, is trough-shaped, including a base 2, a d side flanges 3 and 4, the tlange 3 having` openings or notches 5 in its outer edge; A bracket 6 is secured to the base 2 ot the telly 1 and on the bracket, an angular lever 7 is tulcrumed at 8, one end ot the lever extending through an opening 9 in the base 2 ot the telly 1, and the other end ot the lever extending circumferentially ot the telly 1, along the base 2 thereot, as shown in Figures 1 and S. The lever 7 is adapted to be swung in a plane parallel to the plane ot' the wheel, and in order to hold the lever 7 against the base 2 ot the telly 1, a latch means' ot any sort is provided. The latch means may be inthe torm ot a screw 10 held tor rotation but against longitudinal movement in the tree end ot the lever 7 the screw being adapted to be threaded into the base 2 ot the telly 1. At its outer end, the lever has a tork 11. At a poi-nt remote trom the lever 7, a bracket 12 is secured at 14 to the base 2 ot the telly 1, the bracket being ot U-shape and being provided with openingsl, there being an opening 1G in the bracket, between the openings 15.
The 'numeral 17 marks a circuii'iterentially` movable member, preterably in the torm ot `a rin-g, held 'tor rotation on the base 2 ot the telly 1 between the tiange 3 ot the telly, on
the one hand, and the inner end ot the lever 7 (Figure 2) Vand the bracket 12 (Figure 3) on the other hand. The ring 17 is supplied kwith circumterentially spaced teet 18, which bear-imedi'ately upon the base-f2, ot the telly 1, the major portion ot the ring being `spaced, by the teet 18, tromthe base 2 ot the beveled as at 21, on its inner surtace, and at.
one end ot each opening 20.
The rim 22 may be ot any desired construction., the tire on the rim being designated by the numeral 23, and the inflating valve stem being designated by the numeral 24. The base ot the rim 2 carries lugs 25, v
1n practical operation, the latch screw 10 is released trom the base 2 ot the telly 1 and the lever 7 is swung trom the solid line position ot Figure 8 to the dotted line position ot that tigure, circumterential movement being imparted to the ring 17, because the projection 19 ot the ring is engaged with the tork 11 ot the lever 9, the notches 2O ot the ring 1.7 being brought into registratioi'i with the notches 5 in the side tlange 3 ot the telly 1, as shown in Figures 4 and 6. Then, the rim 22 may be slid transversely into place, in the direct-ion ot the arrows in Figures 4 and 6, the lugs 25 passing through the alined notches 2O and 5, the lugs ultimately abutting against the side flange 4 ot the telly 1, as shown in Figures 5, 6, and 7. The lever 7 is swung back to the position shown in solid lines in Figure 8, and the latch is engaged with the base 2 ot the telly 1, circumferential movement being imparted to the ring 17, the notches in the ring being moved out ot registration With the notches`5 ot the telly, the ring 17 bridging the notches 5 ot the telly, as in Figure 7, and cooperating with the lugs to hold the rim 22 in place. Because the ring 17 is beveled as at 21, and because the lugs 25 are correspondingly beveled, as at 26, the rim 22 will be moved laterally when the ring 17 is shitted circumterentially, and the lugs 25 on the rim will be carried over into abutment with the flange el. ot the telly 1, as in Figures 5 and 7.
In mounting the rim 22 on the telly 1, the intlating valve stem 24 is introduced into the opening 16 ot the bracket 12, and into a corresponding opening 27 in the base 2 ot the telly 1, projections 28 on the rim 22 being received in the openings 15 ot bracket 12, the rim then being moved transversely, in the direction ot the arrows in Figures 4 and 6, until the rim occupies the position depicted in Figure 5.
In order that the ring 17 may be mounted on the telly 1, the ring mayv consist ot two or more parts having their ends 30 overlapped and beveled, the ends 30 ot the parts ot the ring being held together by securing elements 31.
l/Vhat is claimed is In a device ot the class described, a telly comprising a base and side flanges7 a ring rotatable on the base, the ring and one flange having openings adapted to be brought into registration when the ring is rotated, a rim having lugs adapted to enter the openings Wlien they are in registration and when the rim is moved transversely ot the telly, mechanism carried by the telly tor rotating the ring, a single bracket mounted on the base ot the telly and located about opposite to said mechanism, the bracket and said mechanism torming the sole projections on the outer surface ot the base ot the telly, and means tor connecting the bracket With the base ot the telly, the ring being held tor rotation between said tlange on the one hand, and said mechanism and the bracket on the other hand.
In testimony that I claim thetoregoing as my own, I have hereto aHiXed my signature.
