Description

PATENT OFFICE.
LEANDER ELLSWORTH SMITH, OF DIXON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THERON OUMINS, HENRY T. NOBLE, AND ORRIS B. DODGE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLEVISES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,140., dated December 22, 1874; application filed i" October 31, 1874.
To all whom it may conoemf Be it known that I, LEANDER E. SMITH. of Dixon, in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Three-Horse-Plow Clevises, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved plowclevis, shown as applied to a plow-beam. Fig. 2 is a side view of the saine.
Similar letters of. reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents the plow-beam, to the sides of the forward end of whichare bolted two side pieces, B, which have cross-heads b', made in the form of segments of a circle, formed upon their forward ends. In the cross-heads b are formed a number of holes to receive the bolt of the cross-clevis C, which bolt passes through holes in the lugs or arms c1, formed upon the rear side of the clevis C, near one end, and at such a distance apart as to receive the two cross-heads b between them. Upon the rear4 side of the projecting end of the cross-clevis O is formed a loop or slotted arm, c2, into which is hooked one end of the rod D. The rod D has a hook formed upon each end, and its other end is hooked into an eye formed in the outer end 0f the arm or flange E, formed upon one of the cross-head bars B.
This construction allows the point of draft u attachment to be adjusted vertically or laterally, as may be desired. The clevis may be adjusted to project upon either side of theplowbeam by simply reversing it.
I am aware that a plow-clevis has been braced from a projection thereof by a long pivoted nut, a screw-bolt, two rings, and an eyebolt; but this is far more expensive than my simple double hook and cast stud E, while mine can be removed to allow lateral adjustment in one-fourth the time 5 hence The combination, with clevis G c2, of a double hook, D, and @levis-bar B, having perforated flange E, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
LEANDER E. SMITH.
