UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB MICHEL, OE NEW YORK, E. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN ASH-SIFTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,110, dated December 22, H74.; application filed November 13, 1874.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, JACOB MICHEL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and Improved Ash- Sifter, ot" which the following is a specification:
rlliis invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a transverse section in the line x a", Fig. 2.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in an ash-sitter, having a sieve made in two parts, one of which is iixed, while the other is loose, and is connected with levers, by which it may be given a reciprocating motion. With the loose sieve and its levers is combined a spring, in suoli a manner as to aid in imparting motion, as hereinafter more fully specified.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the box of my sifter, which I prefer to make of wood and B C are doors, with which the box is provided. D designates the reciprocating sieve, which is arranged on an inclined plane. Opposite to the sieve is a platform or chute, ld, which also is inclined, but in a direction contrary to the sieve, the chute serving to feed or direct the unsifted ashes upon the sieve, when the same are dropped through the space occupied by the door G in the rootl of the box.
Vhen the ashes are dropped on the sieve D, and the sieve is given a reciprocating motion, the ine ashes fall through and into a compartment, F, formed beneath the sieve, while the coal or coarse ashes roll oft', and are caught in a compartment, G, formed alongside the other compartment. Either or bot-h of these compartments, F G, may be made removable from the box, and the compartment F has the form of a drawer, which may be removed at both ends, or on either side of the box. The draw F isheld by stops a, which swing` on the side 'of the box, or by any other suitable means. lThe compartment G in this example is stationary, access being had toit through the door B.
The compartments F G are preferably made of wood, and provided with a lining, b, of metal, which is proof against the action of the ashes.
D designates the fixed sieve, which is secured to the inner sides of the box A, and forms a support for the lower end' of the loose sieve D, the upper end of the loose sieve being held between a transverse plate, H, and lugs I, which are secured at that point. J designates levers, the respective inner ends of which are pivoted to the rear side of the plate H, while the outer ends are free, and project on opposite sides of the box. From the levers J project arms K, which are subjected to the action of a spring, L, which is secured at or near the bottom edge of the plate H, and has two branches extending, respectively, under the arms of the levers. To the spring L and lever-arms K are connected lugs c, which are formed or secured on the loose sieve D, the connection being eii'ected by interposing the lugs between the spring and arms, or in any other suitable manner. The levers work in slots M formed in the side of the box, and-their outer ends are made so that they can be conveniently grasped by the hand. Vhen either or both of the levers are depressed, the loose sieve D follows the action thereof, and describes a downward movement; but, by the action of the spring L, the whole is immediately returned, so that by repeatedly depressing the levers a rapid reciprocating' motion is imparted to the sieve without any material exertion. In thefront of the sieves is a partition, N, of such length that it allows the coal falling from the sieve to pass under it, to which partition is secured a series of shelves, O. These shelves are immediately opposite the door B, so that they are convenient of access, and they are intended to receive kindling-wood, &c. By this means the utility of the sifter is materially increased.
IVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in an aslrsit'ter, of the rcciprocating sieve D, fixed sieve D', levers J, and spring L with the compartments F G, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 7th day of November, 1874..
JACOB MICHEL.
