Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.1
PETER MCGURK, OF WILLIAMSBURG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOY PUZZLE-BOXES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,106, dated December 22, 1874; application lled July 10, 1874.
specification The object of my invention is to provide a puzzle-box which can be cheaply constructed and easily operated.
In order to describe my invention more fully, I refer to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
Figure I is a plan view of my improved puzzle-box, when one of the inner boxes is drawn out. Fig. II is a sectional view of the same, taken on line x w, Fig. I. Fig. lII is a sectional view taken on line :c x, Fig. I, when both the inner boxes are drawn out.
A is the outer box or casing, open at al and closed at a2. Into the drawer-box A slides another drawer-box, B, having on the upper side an opening, b1, which is covered with a lid, b2, hinged to the box. This box is closed at the outer end and left open at the inner, for the reception of a third box, C, which will be hereafter described. To the under side of box B, and near the inner end, is formed a shoulder, b3, which rests against shoulder a3 of box A, in order to prevent the box B from sliding too far out. a6 are handles, by which the boxB is drawn out or pushed in. The box G is closed at both ends, but the top is left open. The inner end of this box is provided with a shoulder, c1, which locks itself behind thenotch a4, and holds the box C in the position as shown in Fig. II. In order to hold the box C still more securely in this position, there is placed a guide, a5, sliding in grooves c2.
The operation of my invention is as follows Draw the' boxes out, as shown in Fig. Ill, open the lid, and place any small object in the box G; then close the lid and push the boxes back again into the casing. It will then be seen that box G will lock itself behind notch a4. Now, by drawing box B out4 again, it will be seen that, instead of drawing out box C, you will only draw out box B, which will be empty. When box C is to be drawn out, simply press downward the bottom piece al at e, which is attached loosely to the casing A. By this operation the notch a4 is withdrawn from the shoulder c1, which in turn releases the box C, and allows it to slide out with the box B.
Having thus described my invention, I desire to claim- The toy box herein described, consisting essentially of the box Awith the drawer-boxes B (j sliding therein, the shoulders a3 a4 b3 c1, the lid b2, and the guide a5, all combined and arranged to operate substantially as described and shown.
This specification signed this 26th day of June, 1874.
h. PETER is MCGUEK.
