Improvements in Steam Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to steam engines of the single-acting multiple cylinder type, and its object is to provide in an engine of this type a novel and improved valve mechanism 'for controlling the admission and exhaust of the motive fluid, saidmechanism being so arranged as to permit ready reversal of the engine. l
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the engine; Fig. 2 is an end view, partly in section, and Fig. 8 is a horizontal section on the line S-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 10 denotes the cylinders of the motor in each of which operates a reciprocatory piston 11 having its rod 12 connected to a cross head 13 which slides on guides l formed in the lower portion of the cylinder. A pitman 15 connects the crosshead 13 to the crank 16 of the engine shaft 1.7. Figure 2 illustrates that the cylinder head is mounted upon the crank case 18 and is provided at the upper end thereof with a head 19.
The cylinder head 19 is formed with an inlet port 20 which opens at one end through the side thereof, and has its other end opening into the cylinder 10 above the piston 11. In the top of the cyllnder 10 is an exhaust port 21 leading from the bore of the cylinder and opening through the side of the cylinder. Suitable supply and exhaust conduits will .be connected to the outer ends of the ports, but as these are not necessary toan understanding of the invention, they have not been disclosed. I
A rotary valve is employed for controlling the ports 20 and 21. This valve is a solid cylindrical bar 22 positioned alongside the cylinder 10 parallel to its axis, and having at'its upper end transverse ports 23, 24 and 25. The ports 23 and 25 are parallel, and the port 24E is arranged at a right angle to the same. With the valve positioned as shown in Fig. 2, the port 23 controls the inlet port 20, and the port 24 the exhaust port 21. The port 25 is provided for permitting re- Gotham, a p

versal of the engine, this being done by sliding the valve upwardly in the direction port 24 in the plane of the port 20, and the port 25 in the plane of the port l The p'ortedsi'de of the cylinder-10 and the head 19 have a passageway intersecting the ports 20- and 21, in which passageway the ported end ofthe valve 22 seats. At the top, this passageway is fitted with a stuliing box cap 26 for theupper end of the valve 22. The bottom of the passageway is provided with a stufling box 27.
The lower end of the bar forming-the rah e22 has a longitudinal bore in which seats an actuatorshaft 28 of such cross-sectional contour as to transmit motion to the valve, the latter however being free to slide on the shaft'to permit the reversal hereinbefore described. A pivoted fork 29, engaging a groove in the valve bar, is provided for shifting the same.
The valve 22 receives an intermittent rotary movement from the crank shaft 17. For-this purpose, there is fastened to the lower end of the shaft 28 a wheel having four radial grooves 31 arranged in the manner of a Maltese cross, and this wheel receives motion from a wheel 32 having two diametrically opposite outstanding pins 33 on one of its faces. Opposite each pin 33 the wheel 32 is recessed, as shown at 34C, to permit the wheel 30 to pass. The pins 33 enter the grooves 81, one after the other, to give the wheel 30 an intermittent rotary motion. The wheel 32 obtains motion from the crank shaft 17 through a train of gears 35, 36, 37, 38 and 39, the first three being spur gears and the gears and 39 being bevel gears, with the gear 39 on tlie shaft 10 of the wheel 32. The shafts of the various ears are sup ported in suitable hearings on the cylinder 10 and the crank case 18.
The motor will he provided with at least three cylinders, and as the valve mechanism exhaust ports extending entirely there through and arranged at right angles to each other, said valves being of Substantially uniform diameter'and provided below said exhaust ports with additional portsextending entirely therethrough and disposed parallel to said intake ports, and an actuating shaft extending into and having a constant sliding driving connection with said valves.

A steam engine comprising separate cylinders having ports, longitudinally movable and rotatable valves having intake and exhaust ports extending entirely therethrongh said. valves being of substantially uniform diameter and provided below said exhaust ports with additional ports extending entirely' therethrough and disposed parallel to said intake ports, an actuating shaft extending into and having a constant sliding driving connection With said valves, cranks having connection with said longitudinally movable and rotatable valves, and a single crank operator connected to allthe cranks for slmultaneously operatlng'the same and changing the positions of said valves.
