Description
.0.12. MALLURY.
, TMll-Couplings., NO 1581Z Patented Dec. 22,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORSON E. MALLORY, OF BATAVIA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF TWOTHIRDS HIS RIGHT TO ALVIN OOLT AND THOMAS BRIGGS.
IMPROVEMENT IN THlLL-C-OUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,102, dated December 22, 1874; application filed November 11, 1874.
To all whom it may camera Be it known that I, ORsoN E. MALLORY, of Batavia, in the county of Genesee and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thill-Oouplings; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved thill-couplin g, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof.
Corresponding parts in the two figures are designated by like letters.
This invention relates to a certain improvement in thillcouplings; and it consists of a hook with a socket or passage to receive 'the thill-retainin g bolt, itself retained in place by a pin inserted in a transverse passage in the said hook, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A refers to a hook, constructed with a bar, a, by which, with the assistance of the usual clips, it may be attached to the vehicle. B is the thill-retaining bolt, the head b of which is angular in form, and projects from one side thereof, as seen in Fig. 2, and curved on its lower side, by which it is caused to fill the entrance to the hook A, and form, with the latter, an eye for the thill bolt c, the latter bolt being wrapped with suitable packing to lessen friction, &c. The shank, or cylindrical portion of the bolt B enters and passes through a socket or passage, O, in the hookA at its base, and is recessed or notched at d to receive the pin D, inserted through a transverse passage or hole, E, through the hook A, to firmly retain the bolt B in its socket. After the piu or other fastening is inserted through the opening e in the circular portions or flanges f of the bifurcated portion of the thill F, into its hole or passage E, the thill is returned to its original position, when the said flanges will cover the hole or passage E and its pin D, and thus prevent it leaving its place.
My invention is simple and durable, cheap, and neat in appearance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The hook A, having the passages C E, in combination with the bolt B b, having recess or notch d, pin or other fastening D, and thill F f, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
O. E. MALLORY. Witnesses:
J. T. BUXTON, A. M. COLT.
