V. RETTERATH bEVICE FOR MAKING CORRUGATED CYLINDERS Filed Jan. 5. 1924 .n I x Patented Apr. 13, 19.26.
UNITED STATES VALENTIN RETTEBATH, OF INGOLSTADT, GERMANY.
DEVICE FOR MAKING CORRUGATED CYLINDERS.
Application filed January 3, 1924. Serial No. 684,176.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VALENTIN RETTERATH, a citizen of the German Republic, residing at Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Making Corrugated Cylinders, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a device for pro ducing corrugations on cylinders such as are used in textile machines by means of rollers which are rolled in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the cylinder and thereby press grooves therein, the cylinder being rotated one corrugation space after each operation of the rollers. For this purpose rollers having a single circumferential rib have been used, but this has the disadvantage that edges are raised on both sides which must either be removed, or together with the edge of the adjacent groove may form an elevation or crest of a corrugation upon the formation of said adjacent groove. Apart fromthe fact that both possibilities require further expenditure of work, in the former case there is waste of material, whilst in the latter case a corrugation is produced, the crest of which has not the compact structure necessary for the proper and eflicient opera tion of these rollers in continual use.
According to the present invention however the corrugations are produced by means of rollers having a plurality of circumferential ribs, the cylinder to be corrugated being rotated one corrugation space after each operation of the rollers. The advantage is thereby obtained that not only is the formation of an edge avoided, but the material pressed up out of the grooves formed in the cylinder is pressed into the elevated parts or crests of the corrugations so that a compact structure of the material is maintained.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown an example of an apparatus for carrying my invention into effect. Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic view, partly in section, of the roller and the cylinder to be corrugated thereby, Fig. 2 is a front view and Fig. 3 a side view, partly in section, of an assembled device for carrying out my invention.
The rollers a; are provided with a plurality of ribs which may be of annular or spiral form, four such annular ribs, 12,, b b and h being shown in the drawing. The rollers a are further mounted in such a manner that they will rotate upon the cylinder ner that the ribs of the rollers awill be impressed during the first operation of the rolling process according to my invention, as much as possible, their entire depth into the cylinder 0. Between the outer ribs, 7),, and 6 as well as between the ribs 5 and b, there will result a pronounced elevated part while thelinner ribs 6 and 72 will form a nearly finished elevation. For the rolling process according to my invention it will be sufliicient to employ only one pair of ribs on the roller; It is, however, of advantage to employ a plurality of ribs as shown in Fig. 1 for the purpose of carrying out the process of rolling in subsequent steps of which the preceding is preparatory to the subsequent step.
For accelerating the process of rolling according to my invention it will furthermore be of advantage to employ a plurality of rollers and evenly distribute said rollers around the cylinder in a plane perpendicular to its axis, as shown in Figs. 8 and 4. In the arrangement according to Figs. 3 and 4, the roller carrier 03 is provided with four rollers which are spaced from each other by an angle of 90 degrees thus holding the cylinder between themselves and forming a guide for the latter.
The rollers a are mounted upon the roller carrier 03 by means of swinging arms 6 piv oted to guiding members g, which latter are mounted within the hollow arms of the roller carrier d, to permit a radial adjustmentof the guiding members and the rollers. Springs serve to press said guiding members g in outward direction with their oblique rear parts against the inner oblique surface of the rim or handwheel h, which is screwed upon the roller carrier 03. Thus, by rotating said rim in one or the other direction, the rollers will be radially adjusted and enter more or less into the surface of the cylinder 0.
The process of rolling the corrugations according to my invention will be as follows: The cylinder with its diameter exact ly turned off is mounted within a feed mechanism, whereupon the roller carrier is moved in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig 3 by means of machine power. ,During rearward motion of the roller carrier the rollers will swing out toward-the left, so that they will not be able to perform the rolling process. Before the next step oftherollingoperation, the cylinder will be fed forward according to the pitch of the corrugation as indicated by the arrow shown in Fig. 1, and thereupon the rolling is continued. If a cylinder has thus been fed forward'by an angle of 90 degrees, the second step of the process of rolling may be performed by rotating the rim h by hand and adjusting the rollers to a greater depth of rolling, whereupon the aforementioned steps of rolling may be repeated. The chamber 71 in the roller-carrier (Z is kept filled with grease, in order to secure properlubrication, In order tocorrugate the cylinder so as to obtain corrugations of uneven width, it is advisable'to make the circular ribs on the rollers of uneven depth.
lt is to be understood thatthe invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth but that it includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come within either the terms or the spirit of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described for forming longitudinal ribs and grooves in' with respect to the cylindrical body, and a roller supported from each of said elements, each roller having a plurality of circumvferential ribs formed ithereon.
2. A device of the character described for forming longitudinal ribs and grooves in cylinders, comprising a carrier movable longitudinally of the cylinder, a plurality of elements mounted in said carrier for radial movement with respect to the cylinder, arms pivotally connected to said elements and rollers carried by said arms each of said rollers having a plurality of circumferential ribs formed thereon.
3; A structure as recited in claim 2, in combination with a member adapted to act upon all of said elements simultaneously, to
move said elements and the rollers forcibly toward the cylinder.
4. A structure as recited, in claim 2, in combination with an annular member movable axially upon the carrier and having a cam action upon the outer ends of said first named elements, to move said elements and the rollers forcibly toward the cylinder.
5. A structure as recited in claim 2, in combination with spring means tending'to move said elements radially outward, and an annular member threadedupon the carrier and having a cam raction upon the outer end of said elements to force all of said elements simultaneously and forcibly inward to bring the rollers into forcible engagementwith the cylinder.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto aff xed my signature.
VALENTIN RETTERATH.
