To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, Anonrn some, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Ornamenting Artlcles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to methods of ornamenting articles, such as lamp shades, vases and the like.
The objects are to provide a method by which articles may be ornamented with de signs of different colors having glass crystals in cluster-like form thereon which stand out in relief on the surface of the article, and by which designs having clean and definite lines may be produced.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings in whic Figure 1 is a fragmentary face view of an article ornamented in accordance with the first step of my method,

The surface 1 of an article 2, which may be of parchment, fabric or glass, is coated with 'a quick drying varnish 3, preferably opaque such as black lacquer, or equivalent material such as collodion or a celluloid solution. After the coatin of varnish is dry, a suitable design 4, as o a bird, is painted, preferably through a stencil, on the coating,
with a colored varnish solvent or thinner,
or a paint having the solvent therein, to soften the varnish coating. Glass crystals 5,
commonly known as beads, are strewn over the design. The glass crystals are caused'to sink through the paint and softened varnish to the surface of the article. The c I as they are strewn, accumulate in c uster like form and stand out in relief on the surface. The paint and softened varnish with the .clustered crystals embedded therein are then allowed to dry, afterwhich the orna stals mented surface is coated with a clear varnlsh to protect it from moisture. The product is a rich ornamentation of various colors having clean and definite lines.
If the article is transparent or translucent, such as a lamp shade, the light passing'through the article will pass through the glass crystals contacting therewith and illaminate the various colors of the dried solvents in which the crystals are embedded. The opaque varnish coating 'on the article will prevent light from passing through the shade, and thus give the design clean and definite lines.
ornamentation by this method does not require highly skilled labor and the article produced is rich in appearance and will withstand rough usage, such as received in shi ping and handling.
hile I have describedlmy invention as taking .a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts maybe changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure 'by Letters Patent is 1. The hereinfdescribed method of ornamenting articles, consisting of coating the article with a quick drying material; painting a design on the dried material with a colored solvent to soften the same, and applying crystals to the colored solvent and softened material.
2. The herein described method of ornayfiting articles, consisting of coating the article with a quick drying material, paintv ing a design on the dried material with a co ored solvent to soften the same, applyingcrystals to the solvent and softened material, and, causing the crystals to sink through the solvent and softened material to-contact with the article.
